Democratic Mediocrity

Change We Can Believe In

President Barack Obama was elected by a majority of Americans last November. In 2006, Democrats gained majorities in both houses of Congress and last November was awarded a "super majority" over the Senate thus stopping any feeble attempt by Republicans to filibuster any bills they did not like. The moment was set: President Obama was going to take over power with his party in charge of Congress. Due to former President George Bush and his failings over the past eight years, Americans were ready for change. They voted for change.

But nothing has changed. President Obama's plans have been thwarted and stalled. And sadly, this has been done despite the fact the Republicans are in disarray. The Republicans have simply said no to everything and offered no plans whatsoever. But they are not the problem.

The problem; Democratic Mediocrity.

Reid And Pelosi: The Spineless Wonders

Many Liberals Have Lost Faith In The Current Leadership
Many Liberals Have Lost Faith In The Current Leadership

Pardon Me, Have You Seen My Spine?

Who is to blame for the Democrats ineptness? Well, certainly, there is enough blame to go around. But first and foremost are the Democratic leaders in Congress Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

First off, who in their right mind would make them the visable and vocal leaders of a political party. Neither are inspiring. Neither invoke confidence. Neither of them invoke a sense of leadership. Neither of them is someone anyone would follow anywhere. When they speak, most people change the channel.

Secondly, neither of them are willing to fight for anything. They capitulate, they compromise on things that should be deal breakers. Well, then, maybe they are a perfect example of a Congressional Democrat these days.

Democrats no longer fight for what they once claimed to believe in. The Environment, Healthcare, Education, you name it, they have stopped fighting for it. Take for example this small issue of Abstinence only Education. The Democratic run Senate Finance committee just approved 50 million dollars for abstinence only education. Why, because Democrats are longer willing to fight for sexual education in this Country. Instead, they have given into the right wing of the Republican Party without throwing a punch.

Republicans Fought And Democrats Went Running

The Issue Of Healthcare

The current health care debate exemplifies the lack of Congressional leadership shown by Pelosi and Reid. President Obama ran on the promise of bring this Country closer to Universal Health care. His plan: a public option. Immediately the Republicans and those forces that want to keep the status quo went to work. They shouted that the plan was a socialist plot. They shouted that it wanted death panels. They shouted it would kill the deficit.

In the face of all this shouting, Democrats retreated. The very first thing that should have been done was a bill should have been introduced calling for Universal Health care. This has been a democratic goal for decades. Of course the Republicans were going to say no. Of course the Republicans were going to shout about fiscal spending. Republicans were never going to agree to anything at first. They had to show that they still mattered. They had to show their own base that they were going to fight for them. Of course they were going to fight.  The President could have introduced a bill to recognize that the sky was bill and the Republicans were going to be against it.

But instead, Democrats in both houses introduced a compromise bill in the hopes that it would garner some support from the Right. And were shocked that it didn't work. Now instead of fighting to cover as many people as possible as part of a compromise bill, the Democrats are stuck trying to save any healthcare bill whether it is actual reform or not.

But instead of fighting, instead of putting their foot down, instead of staying true to democratic principles, instead of doing what they promised to do, Democrats are are talking about tort reform. They are talking about allowing the insurance industry to run things. Now that is leadership. The Republicans have never had such good leadership on these issues; oh, wait, that's right; Reid and Pelosi are Democrats.

Congressional Democrats argue that their main goal is to keep the Democratic majority and the way to do this is to protect the moderate Democrats from red states. For what? What good is a democratic majority if the majority is not going to be used to pass democratic legislation? And if these moderates are so moderate that they will only vote for conservative bills, are they moderates or Republicans? If they are so moderate that they will never support democratic platform legislation, let them go. Better to have a Republican in the seat than someone who is a Democrat in name only and will never vote with the democratic party.

The Great Ones Did What Was Right Even If It Wasn't Popular
The Great Ones Did What Was Right Even If It Wasn't Popular

Can I Have My Change That I Can Believe In Please?

It appears President Obama is akin to Michael Jordan when he played on a bad team. He is the most talented of the group, but can't get it done until the team gets better. However, that does not mean President Obama does not deserve a large part of the blame. He does.

First, President Obama has to accept the fact that he won the election and is actually President of the United States. This means that he has to do more than talk shows and news conferences. He must lead. And if he truly believes that he is right, he and he alone must force his will on the Country. Or at least, force his will on his own party.

But the President has not done that. He has sat back and allowed the Congressional leadership take ownership of health care, the economy and the other issues the President said were his main issues. When people voted in the democratic super majority last November, they were not voting for these individual members of Congress.  They were voting for Obama and his vision for the Country.

But now the Congressional Democrats have made a mess of it. It is time for President Obama to go at it alone. Forget Bipartisanship. Forget keeping a democratic majority. Forget tyring to make everyone happy. Presidents are not paid to make everyone happy. They are paid to do what is right for the Country regardless of the consequences. The good ones are proven right. The best ones were provien right even if they were not popular at the time.

President Obama has the makings of a great President. However, until he uses his talent to bring his vision to life, he will simply be mediocre. If he continues to allow the substitute teachers in Congress run the show, he will be remembered as a single term President.

History Will Remember Obama Either As A Transformational Leader Or Another Avereage Democratic President Who Happened To Be African American. It Is Up To Him.

Take A Lesson From President Bush

Regardless of what anyone thought of President George W. Bush, it is hard to deny that he did not care about what was popular. He did not care about making friends with the left if they disagreed. When he believed he was right he went full steam ahead. The problem with George W. Bush was his decisions were mostly shown to be wrong. But at least he was willing to fight and go at it alone.

President Obama is simply smarter than George W. Bush. He is well educated, compassionate, and has a wealth of real world experience. He was a candidate with a funny name that took down the Clinton machine. His talent is endless. But smart is not enough. Toughness is needed as well and George W. Bush had that. Perhaps if Obama acted a little more like George W. Bush, his other talents could fix the economy, bring real health care reform and improve relations around the world.

History will remember George W. Bush. History will only remember Obama because of his skin color unless he makes something of the office he now holds. It is time for President Obama to lead. He must get in front of the issues instead of waiting to hear what might pass. He must make some enemies. He must make hard decisions. Simply, he must start acting Presidential. Otherwise history will remember him as another meidocre democratic President who happened to be African American.

This is so true. If we'd throw out the incumbant every time we voted, I don't think it would be so. Congress is a mess, experienced at utilizing all the tricks of the trade. The president must rise above it.

I agree. For the most part, Congress is a mess by design. But the current crop has taken it to new levels.

Thanks for the comment.

Well at least we agree on Pelosi and Reid. The rest ain't going to happen.

The Reps. are not stopping it, it is "we the people" are. Obama change is socialism, which I know you don't agree with but his actions, his Czars, and policies he want is. And "we the people" will not put up with the lies Obama is saying. The congress voted down the Photo ID for healthcare, which proves Joe Wilson to be correct and there will not be any prove of citizenship for the healthcare, if passed. Obama lied! Some day you guys will figure out Obama like the rest of us have, and a lot of those who voted for him, that now wish they had not of, but they had not other choice. Like you say the Reps can't organize themselves out of wet paper bag right now, but the is okay,"we the people" are stepping up and letting congress know. If Obama gets the hope and change he wants, he is out of there in 2012. He is just trying change it enough taht we can't vote in 2012, and he will always be king, oops I mean President.

Evory,

Thanks for the comment. I think it is politically wrong to call Obama a Socialist, fact is he is not even a liberal. Liberals would have never bailed out the corporations. A Liberal would never fight for the moderate to right wing healthcare "reform" currently before Congress.

Joe Wilson was right? The only thing worthy of screaming at during that speech was the fact that Mexicans might get healthcare. Where is a bleeding Mexican to go in this Country anymore, even if he is a citizen. I find it odd conservatives are calling Obama Hitler when they are pushing for citizenship documentation.

eovery profile image

eovery  says:

Wait a minute, Pelosi started the Hitler grap. An it is illegal aliens. Not citizens. I do not know where you got the "even if he's a citizen"

The bailouts were all about controlling the corporations. Also, the socialist country have some of biggest corporations. They tax them so that they have the money to run the country.

What moderate the right wing healthcare? I have been following this, and this is one of the first time I have heard this tidbit.

The dems control all of congress, why don't they just ram it through congress? Because we the people have warned them of the concequences. A majority of the people do not want the healthcare package they are proposing. We the people are talking.

And Obama is on record of for 4 lies during the talk. And he also ligitimized Sarah Palin. He did not even have to bring up death panels. Especially when Obama has said all along that maybe some operation will not be done on elder, and they may have to settle for the blue pill instead. If this is not death panel, I do not know what is. Obama contracted himself. So which statement of his can I trust is true.

Keep on hubbing!

If Pelosi started this Hitler crap, then just another reason she needs to go. I didn't like George Bush, but calling him Hitler goes to far.

As for the citizenship thing, if a brown man walks into a hospital bleeding and doesn't have a wallet on him because he was just mugged, should they really ask for ID first. And what is the consequence if that same guy is an American.

They aren't going to think twice about the illegals who come through Canada, or the Russians, or the Swedes. It is ssolely anti Mexican and therefore a racial issue.

I think the people have been roused from their slumber and the Dems have become painfully aware that if they go through with their radical plans their tenure will be as short as possible. As it has come to light who Obama has on his team, people are rightfully concerned that many of these people hate their country as it exists now and most Americans simply don't feel that way. Most Americans love their country. Before you scoff I want to remind that I told you what kind of organization ACORN was five months ago and you defended them.

bgpappa profile image

bgpappa  says:

Actually I didn't defend them, but I will now. Yes, there have been some horrible things done and those people should have the book thrown at them. But as will come out, some of those tapes were out of context and I believe some of the organized destruction of Acorn is racially and socially motivated as they register low income communites, provide low income housing.

To siimply say Obama and the democrats don't love their country is too simplistic for someone of your intellect. And frankly, I am tired of hearing it from conservatives in general. Because conservatives and liberals have different views on what the country needs does not mean that each don't love it equally. And I believe a majority of people support Obama, they just are the ones screaming right now.

A hospital cannot deny anybody emergency care. So that arguement does not work.

You are off target on this anyway. The point is that Obama did lie saying illegals will not get the health care - not the moral ethics about it. Why do you guys always try to change the subject?

Is it political correct on what the libs did and are doing to Sarah Palen? The libs attack Palen, but the conservs can say anything about Obama without it being racist or political incorrect.

Keep on hubbing.

Well, first of all, its Palin. And I don't think liberals ahve been that tough on Palin. But when she puts herself out there, whenever anyone says anything about her she blames the liberal media. Nevermind the fact that even Fox News ssys the same things about her.

As for Obama, I for one didn't say that whenever anyone says anything bad about Obama that makes them racist. I said when people say things about Obama that are racist, then they are racists.

But Joe Wilson being upset about illegal immigration is racist as well. Not against Obama but against Mexicans in general. I don't think my example is off target. If someone doesn't look "American" Wilson wants papers checked before they are covered by the healthcare plan. And letting the bleeding man use the emergency room isn't an answer. And also, when the hospital lets the guy into the emergency room, they still have to charge someone. They generally go after the guy himself, then the family. If nobody can pay, we all pay. Efficient system.

The bill scored by the non partisan CBO states that illegal aliens are not covered under the plan. So I don't see where he lied during his speech. But, I guess, if we are going to judge Presidential lies then Iraq has WMDs, Brownie your doing a good job and I am a compassionate conservative are worse.

Thanks for the comment.

Obama knew that the Photo ID requirement would not be in the bill, so the illegals would get health care because there is nothing to keep them from getting it. This is the lie.

Stay on subject. This is about Obama not Bush! Obama is the President now, quit forgetting that.

Obama said the bill would say that illegals cannot get coverage. The bill says that illegals cannot get coverage. So how did he lie. If you don't believe him then that is a different story? Say on subject, this article was about how bad the democrats in Congress are and you are commenting about illegal immigrants getting health insurance. Funny how conservatives have changed in 8 months. It is hard to forget about George Bush when we are all still dealing with the aftermaths of his presidency.

Great hub Big Pappa (I know you love it when I call you Big Pappa)! I couldn't agree with you more. I'm sure someone close enough to the president can see this as well, they need to get in his ear and inform him that the people that didn't for him will never agree with him - so f**k 'em! Just worry about getting the people that did vote for you, to vote for you again. Service us with no regrets, and move on.

You may be right, but I think healthcare reform is just around the corner. Perhaps the strategy was to allow the conservatives to scream themsevles tired, then pass it. Only time will tell, and only real leadership will get it done.

you are in denial bgpappa. Obama is the democratic party. You say that the democratic party would never do some of the things Obama has done?...Well then who did it? Last time I checked the President of this country does not have absolute authority. It was democratic representation that allowed all of this nonsense to occur. The latest testament to this will be gays in the military. What a waste of political dollars and time. It doesn't even matter as an issue because for the most part gays are bleeding heart liberals who would never sacrafice anything serving in the military of this country but Obama will do whatever it take to appease them and gain their support for gala polls and re-election. This is the same tactic used with the healthcare bill. It is only an issue for 15% of Americans but minorities including illegal immigrants are lumped into that category. Just the mere presentation of the bill wins their support which in fact equals way more than 15% of the population. He has no shame he even wants the anti american vote demonstrated by kissing hugo chavez, stating that WE overthrew the democratically elected president of Iran and praising the islamic world does not show leadership and guts, it shows that he is willing to barter with every American value that made us what we WERE before being slowly destroyed from within starting in 1969 by liberals. There is no mass appeal for American loyalty anymore. Conservatives want to fix this deficit but there is no avenue. Look what happens if one measly little cable company tries to broadcast a conservative point of view. It isn't handled by liberal networks..no the WHITE HOUSE comes crashing down on them. As if to say "How dare you try to show the people of this country any point of view that isn't congruent with liberal philosophy" The tides will turn. I just hope that it happens before this stupid 40 year long hippie experiment explodes in America's face in some terrible shift in power. If it doesn't I suggest you learn arabic and start studying the quoran.

Thanks for the comment,

since 1968, Republicans have held the White House for thirty years and Democrats only 12 years and ten months. So I am not sure why Liberals get all of your blame for the last forty two years.

And no the White House does not have absolute authority, despite what Cheny and Bush say.

Healthcare is an issue for all Americans, not just 15%. Many Americans are paying more and getting less out of their healthcare.

As for gays in the military, I am offended that you would disregard the thousands of gays serving in the military and dying for the country. The good thing this issue raises are twofold 1). First equal rights for all, not chose you approve of and 2). shows the Conservative true colors. You hate blacks, mexicans and gays. That is why you are fighting so hard against everything Obama is doing.
