Fantasy Art Drawing: How To Draw An Ugly Troll
81First Troll Sketch
Step 1: Basic Troll Drawing
Drawing a troll I thought would be quite fun as they seem to quite largely get ignored in favour of the more traditional fantasy characters like dwarves, elves and dragons.
And for the classic inspired way of drawing them I thought of drawing the troll living under a bridge, which places it in context with some old stories of the past of Trolls living under bridges and killing passers by with axes and sledge hammers then eating them, but I've left out the bridge on this occasion to just show the troll!.
Here we have the first sketch of a good solid troll figure, I wanted to make them hugely muscular as I imagine these creatures as such and I've sketched in an axe, which is a more popular weapon, but trolls can have other types of weapons like maces, clubs and hammers so whatever the one you want in your troll picture will do nicely!
Ink The Troll Figure
Step 2: Adding Ink For Defined Lines
When it comes to adding the ink for the outlines it is best at this stage just to follow everything that you have pencilled out first and add details after that, then you can do it all at once, this way you won't miss the hairs on the trolls right arm like I did and his hairy chest!!
Sometimes it is best to experiment at this stage with certain ink techniques, to get the right textures if there are any to be found on the troll figure, but in this case on my drawing there isn't much texture or varying types of clothing such as fur or anything, but in your drawing you might decide to add them, because here we are more concerned about the inspiration and concept ideas rather than a draw my way kind of tutorial.
Of course depending on the different types of light sources the troll could be in the dark at night so you would have to add more dark areas and place the light source from somewhere such as the moon, I have not added much shadow to the troll so that could imply that it is during the day and he has stepped out of his bridge.
Shaded Troll Drawing
Step 3: Shading Your Troll, Give It Some Form!
Adding the shading for me always makes the drawing come alive, it fills in the gaps and adds form to the character, of course you may not want to shade yours, you might want to get the old pencil crayons out and give it the bright and colourful once over, I recommend Crayola coloured pencil crayons as the blendability of these are excellent for creating new colours and blending the grand scheme of things together.
I try to shade against all the lines so that it does create depth and the illusion of form.
Ugly Troll Head Profile
Drawing Of A Trolls Head
Trolls heads can look how you want to, they can have hair or they can be bald, with scars or without, overbite canine teeth or not. The choice is up to you as what your trolls main characteristics will look like, I sometimes like the bald look, but I have been known to draw trolls with long hair too so it's a personal choice.
Just try and make your troll as ugly as you can!

Trolling For Comments!
Cheers I really got into this one, trolls are great to draw!
Man that is one ugly troll. He would scare the crap out of his mum.
Yes damn he is ugly!!!!!!
I wish I could draw as well as you do. I only need to add illustrations to my articles on hub pages. Guess I should start practicing when nobody's around! LOL!
I would have started to do these tutorials when I first joined hubpages if it wasn't for getting involved with affiliate marketing I would have had several drawing ebooks out now and making more than a part time income....ah well at least I am working on them now!.
Images with articles work so well and they can be an extra traffic source.
Looks like me with no coffee, lol. Awesome artist, :)
Cheers Dame!
Good tutorial. Nice drawings, too. I doodle more than draw. It is nice to see the stages in a drawing. Maybe someday...
Drawing is great and relaxing too, I used to doodle more than I drew too, but now I draw every day and there is no end in sight!!
Cheers for your comments Ron!
Hey waynet, basically anything I draw *looks* like a troll straight off! But this looks promising and you've given me hope that perhaps I can make it more troll-like by intention, rather than accident. Make sense? Cheers!
Your welcome lbd!
This troll I've realised looks more like an ogre, it's only the face profile I drew that really looks lie a troll..oh well I might update this hubpage soon!
Oh really?! What's the difference? Good idea- hub it!
Hi there! An ogre is much like a large muscle bound giant and a troll is like a muscle bound freak, just a small difference that I can notice, I know this from the research I have done over the years on the many topics of fantasy art.
I've already got a draft in notepad on how to draw an ogre and I've made it slightly different to separate the content from this one.
Thats really great! nice detail
Great article and wonderful examples. Your trolls are more the classic fairy tale troll, with hairy arms and a more mammalian look. There's always doing them in green or blue colours like a certain roleplaying game describes them... it would not take much to adapt this build to the rockier look of a Terry Pratchett character like Detritus, for example. I've been reading Pratchett lately and so I'm tending to think of trolls as more rocky, with lichen where you'd get hair in patches, maybe some carvings on them like tribal tattoos or urban graffiti, and belts of sheep skulls and other humorous bits.
Cheers Robert! I see these hubs, especially my drawing ones as a way of adding to them with maybe a few more examples each and a video or two to try and make them even more useful as little inspiration type articles.
I like the idea of adding more design elements from a Terry Pratchett book to incorporate them into my troll drawings on this hubpage, I may just do that when this hubchallenge is all over with!!
