Some of you may have read my How To Increase Traffic To Your Site Or Blog written earlier. This article may be considered as an addendum to that.

I have been getting considerable traffic from non-English domains and sites, mainly from non-English Google searches from all over the world and foreign language bookmarking sites. I have successfully generated traffic from Italian, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Portugese, and many other foreign language domains. This is what prompted me to suggest the installation of a 'Translate This Page' button or widget here at HubPages.

Earlier last month Google indexed one of my hubs and then later decided to de-index it. For more than two weeks there was no traffic from google for this page after getting solid hits from the search engine soon after publishing it. Since then they have re-indexed that hub and traffic from google has picked up again. I believe one of the reasons that may have acted in my favor is the traffic and backlinks I got from non-English sites during that lull period.

According to the World Internet Statistics, only around 30% internet users are Engish. So, there are nearly 70% of the traffic to aim for!. Please refer to the screenshot below. These stats are last updated on June 30, 2008.

How To Get Traffic From Non-English Sites

One of the reason I wanted the 'translate this page' button is that, not all foreign language visitors will be able to comprehend what is on a stricly English site and they may never return again. Or they will have to use their own tool to translate the pages. Although there are a lot of free online translation tools available I rely on Google Translate.

As Mark Indicated, there is also a lighter side of online automatic translations with which you can entertain yourself at Lost In Translation.

Ok. Here is how I do it.

With Google Translate you can translate most major languages somewhat effectively. Using this tool I translate the title and text for the article into the language I want. I copy these and head over to the foreign language bookmarking sites of my choice. Once again I use the Google Translate tool to convert their pages to english. Now you can easily use that site just like any other English bookmarking sites and hope to get some traffic from them. Anyway you are getting a free backlink from a foreign language site! Don't forget that most of these foreign language sites have high PR as well.

For your reference below is the biggest list of working non-English bookmarking sites that you can use to get some high traffic. I am sure in the coming years there will be more and more language specific sevices on the net, and I will have keep on updating this list. But always remember not to break the golden rule of social bookmarking sites. DONT SPAM!

Thank you being commenting, Melanie.

The linking is quite easy to do. Just click on the green button, then right click on your favorite button and select the 'copy link location'. You are done!

I don't understand quite what you do.  You translate the title and body and you copy it.  (presumably to a file in a local text editor or something.)   So far so good.  Then you go to these non english sites.  And you book mark your translation in these non english sites.   I assume they want you to bookmark the article in their language that is published somewhere on the web.  What you failed to tell us is where do you publish the translation or is it only the dynamic links to them that you copy?

As for how she got the link to stumble, privateeye2500  she probably just created /  copied the linkes from the expander and used the link tool to link them to those phrases.   You could substitute your own hub addresses and it would work just fine.

OK, now that i tried it I see what you do. You bookmark a URL such as
http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F

Nice.

Not really. Using that redirect link may get you banned from those sites. It is always best to submit the actual url.

A very good post, Sun. But, majority of the translation results using widgets doesn't give 100% correct translation unless the article is manually translated by human who know the language. I know how to read chinese and i did try to translate some english articles into chinese using widget. The tranlation results was very poor.

Sometimes, it is much better to ask other hubbers or friends who know the second lauguage to do the translation for you. I think it is much better.

I'm actually quite amazed to find out that chinese account for 20% of the internet users. I thought of adding a translation widget to my blog, but was caught up in writing a post or modifying something and never really got around to it.

However, with this new information that I've learned off of your article, it sort of seems wasteful to traffic, and visitors not to.

Great job SunSeven. I really appriciate you taking the time to send me this information.

Have a great day.

Great work, this is definitely something worth looking into. I've used babblefish before for translations on ebay messages to potential buyers, with mixed results. It obviously doesn't get everything, and the context might be a little wacky, but it gets the general point across.

Is it spam if I ask you if you are interested in using your knowledge of foreign language bookmarking site use to help set up a non-English affiliate program where I am the "merchant"?If even asking you about using your speciality for business purposes is spam, then please ignore this post.If it is not, and you give me permission, I will give you an outline by email, or whatever... I just joined and really don't know what is included in the prohibition against "... promoting your hubs or other sites...", either.
