Is this where we're heading?

Global warming
Global warming
Global Burning????
Global Burning????
Total Global Decay????????
Total Global Decay????????

Did you know that the simple act of turning on the television or that everytime you make a pot of coffee you're producing carbon emissions?

Ideas that do not cost any money and in actual fact save money that make a great start to reducing your contribution to global warming are listed here:

  1. Recycle as much as possible. (Including clothes and household furnishings)
  2. Do all the shopping and errands once a week. (saves on gas for the car and time)
  3. Turn things off when not in use (lights, television, computer etc. ...)
  4. Unplug mobile phone and IPod chargers as soon as they're finished charging
  5. Turn down the central heating/central airconditioning even just 1 to 2 degrees C (will noticably lower yearly fuel bills)
  6. Turn down the water heating setting (just 2 degrees will show up as a significant savings)
  7. Make an insulated cover for the hotwater tank from an old blanket. (Make sure the tanks venting is left uncovered)
  8. Fill the dish washer and washing machine to full capacity loads. (this will save water, electricity, and soap and rise agents)
  9. Hang laundry out to dry on the line instead of using the dryer. (Even if you still use the air fluff cycle it still will make a difference on the fuel bill)
  10. Fill the kettle with only as much water as you need. (For a small appliance the kettle uses a lot of power)
  11. Defrost the fridge and freezer regularily. (Try to keep the freezer at near full capacity this cuts down the cost of keeping everything frozen)
  12. Instead of driving to the park or gym walk or bike.
  13. Sign up to a green energy supplier, who will supply electricity from renewable sources (e.g. wind and hydroelectric power) - this will reduce your carbon footprint contribution from electricity to zero
  14. Try to buy locally made products (this not only save local jobs but it reduces transport charges)
  15. Buy local organic produce whenever possible (healthier, better tasting)
  16. Buy local fruit and vegetables, or even try growing your own (without using damaging chemicals and fertilizers...for weed and bug control use the companion planting methods)
  17. Buy as little fresh fruit and vegetables that are out of season, as they have to be flown in.
  18. Don't buy over packaged products (even though some items come prepackaged recycle it instead of sending it to the landfill site)
  19. As the o;d style lightbulbs burn out replace them with energy saving bulbs.
  20. Replace your old boiler with a new energy efficient condensing boiler
  21. Use the bus or a train rather than your car
  22. Carpool to work or for the kids school run
  23. If your work allows, work from home one day a week
  24. When traveling turn the lights and air-conditioning off when leaving the hotel room
  25. Ask for your room service to wash towels and bedding every other day, rather than every day
  26. Don't buy bottled water if the tap water is safe to drink (especially if it has been shipped from far away)

Help me please by adding extra ways to save emission gases into the comment box below. Thanks

Hey zsuzsy bee, how are you??? seems like a long time since we've connected. i love this Hub. it has great ideas and a list of lots of stuff we can control. our heater is going out and i am hoping we can afford to replace it with solar heat, as we are already passive solar. it will depend on my husband finding a new job, haha. (me, too.) meanwhile, these suggestions will help the environment and our pocketbook so thanks a million.

Thanks Zsuszy for showing us how to save in more than one way. And no I did not know every time I made a pot of coffee I was producing carbon emissions. I learn something new everyday. Thanks again and Take Care!

Storyteller! I'm doing just fine... just griping about the cold winter. I'm investigating all the to-dos for a wind mill. Possibly next year... here is me crossing my fingers. This year I might need a new heater for the pool if yes then it will be solar. Thanks for taking a look.

Take care greetings Zsuzsy

ZsuZsy Bee,

I am in my early 50's and i have been composting for my garden since I was 16. I got on the kick when I was the little hippie type in high school Ha! Now everybody is on the band wagon. My big concern is all the processed foods.

You know I went to the store to buy some oatmeal the other day and all they had were the Quick Oats which I hate because they are mushy and sorta remind me of glue. There were no Old Fashioned Oats to be had in any brand. Not even Quaker Oats.

Everyone could be more enlightened to eat more raw foods and get away from all the nasty processed stuff. All the time it takes to make raw potatoes in to some frozen form of quick fix potato something has to be stressing on our environment and not just stressing me!

It use to be we worried over hot dogs and bologna. Now the majority of products are mass produced who knows what's really in a box or a can. This is one thing that really freaks me.

Chicken Tenders, tator tots, pop tarts, lunchables, liquid yogurt, single servings of every kind, pringles, frozen baked potatos, frozen biscut breakfast sandwiches, frozen pancakes, cup o soup,,,,,,,, my God the list goes on and on......I can honestly say that never a poptart has crossed my lips and never will.

C.S. I'm with you on this 100%.

One of my pet peeves is that I have a hard time finding seeds even for simple veggies that have not been "molested" (when something is altered into its DNA that is the only word I can use) to their deepest core.

We all need to shout our concern from every possible venue to wake up every passive world inhabitant. Thanks for the visit kindest

regards Zsuzsy
