5 Ways to Save Money Over the Holidays

With the economy in a slump this year, just about everyone is looking for ways to save at the holidays, which are probably the most expensive time of year. Here are a few ways to save money and still provide a fabulous Christmas or other holiday for your kids and families.

Across the Board Budget Cuts

I set aside money throughout the year to cover Christmas. It’s been such a stress reliever ever since I started doing this. I have my pot of money at the end of the year and nothing goes on the credit card. I did the same thing this year, but I’m thinking we may not spend it all. Over the years our family’s gift spending has increased. This might be a good time to cut back and put the extra money toward the emergency fund. I’m thinking a 50% reduction is in order!

Invite Friends Over

This one may sound counterintuitive, but the more the merrier for budget friendly get-togethers. Why? Simple, no one expects you to provide T-Bones for twenty. Invite a bunch of people over for chili, chowder, or spaghetti. Keep it casual and ask everyone to bring a bottle of wine and an appetizer.

Ask Family to Contribute

If you’re entertaining family at your house this year, make sure everyone has an assignment. Even if the tradition has been for the host to provide everything, this is the time to switch things up. Divi-ing up the duties not only spreads the cost, but also the stress of preparing for a big holiday feast.

Savor the Season

Often times the more we spend the less we do. By do I mean get out there and experience. Go window shopping, take a walk, make a big deal of driving around and looking at the lights. Try out the massage chairs while people watching. Make cocoa and take it to the park. There is a lot to do without spending a lot of money if you have an open and curious mind.

Scrap the Cards

Instead of spending big money on Christmas cards that announce your status as a success, why not get the kids involved making homemade cards. Specialty papers, inks, and stamps are plentiful and inexpensive now at Walmart thanks to Martha Stewart. Or just go all digital and create a Christmas card blog! It’s free and easy. Best of all: no postage!

The hardest part about saving money at the holidays is actually deciding to do it. Once you’ve made up your mind, there are countless ways to save!
