Eggnog is a popular winter beverage consisting of eggs, milk and spices. Served cold, it is commonly prepared with some form of alcohol as well (though only for adults!) Cognac, brandy, whiskey, rum or any dark liquor can be added to these chilled beverages to further spice up the flavor.

Eggnog is most often associated with Christmas and New Year's, however it holds no particular standard holiday affiliation.

Gamergirl's Egg Nog Recipes

These recipes are both easy and leave a lot of room for you to customize your eggnog by taste and preference. I hope you enjoy. Happy holidays!

For note: Eggnog can be prepared by cooking the mixture on the lowest possible heat setting on your stovetop. If you do prepare by cooking, only cook the eggnog for long enough that the mix coats the spoon and stir constantly while you are cooking. Use a quick read thermometer to watch the temperature and remove the mixture from heat as soon as it reaches 160 degrees. Then chill as per normal instructions.

If you prefer not to gently cook the eggnog, that's fine. Ensure that you have washed your hands before you begin preparing the eggnog either way.

Easy Eggnog

  • 6 eggs
  • 3 cups milk
  • 8 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 teaspoon real vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, ground

Beat the eggs in a large bowl, adding milk and sugar slowly while you beat.

Continue beating until mixture thickens slightly.

Add in the vanilla extract, cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir well.

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and stick it in the fridge until chilled.

This recipe makes eight servings of eggnog. Please enjoy!

Low fat version:

  • 6 cups skim milk
  • 1 1/4 cup "Egg Beaters" (or similar)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla essence
  • 4 teaspoons Splenda or other artificial sweetner
  • 2 x pinch nutmeg, ground
  • 2 x pinch cinnamon, ground

Make as above, low fat version serves 6.

I've never tried Eggnog, maybe this year. I see the basic premise is eggs. It seems that for the most part they are raw in the drink. Is this correct?

From everything I have read there are two ways you can prepare egg nog, but I'll add that into the hub. :P Thanks Whitney!

Egg nog is one of my favorites! Unfortunately you don't see it around the supermarkets most of the year -- only around certain holidays. Years ago I made it myself, with raw eggs naturally, but today they say you have to be careful about raw eggs (and lots of other foods.) A little spice is nice, too. Great hub, gamergirl.

Gamegirl,

You are mean! LOL One of your earlier articles was about drinking water to curb hunger....But look what you did now. I LOVE EGGNOG!

I've never made eggnog but since I've seen how easy it seems to be I'm going to have to try a batch.

Thanks for the yummy idea!

Susan

Eggnog, pumpkin pie, candy canes.. these are the holiday treats we are allowed to savor.

Remember moderation, my lovely friends! Thank you for your fabulous comments. :)

Great HUB! I always make eggnog for NewYears eve, but spiked with dark rum, you really won't have to worry too much about the raw eggs...better said you won't care about the eggs having been raw.

Just kidding, rem to only use fresh eggs (when cracked the yoke of fresh eggs will stay in a really "high dome" shape)

Tastey HUB

I love eggnog (though I hated it as a child XD), and I'm always craving it after they've stopped selling it in stores. Thanks for this recipe, as I can now drink eggnog when I want. :)

You're very welcome Brandy! I plan on drinking eggnog whenever I wish, though my secret recipe is both nonalcoholic and a little more spicy than the above recipes. :P

I'm glad you suggested the cooked version, too - I had a bad run-in with an uncooked egg dessert about 15 years ago. :-)
