How to write for money online: HubPages vs. Examiner
79Wriitng for money online; Two services compared
Whether you are an established writer in the offline world or just discovering the world of writing for money there are many services you should absolutely be familiar with.
Two top contenders that you will see in your research (You are researching right?) are Hubpages and the Examiner.
Both sites can offer you a great part time income if you put the correct effort in but they have a very distinct pay structure and system. You you should be familiar with the differences so you can formulate your attack and maximize your income.
Quick Guide for the lazy
HubPages.com offers income via an impression sharing system. In exchange for using their high profile publishing platform you give up 40% of you page views to their advertising codes.
Believe it or not this is a good deal.

Examiner.com is more akin to being a syndicated columnist, you are writing to a theme or region and you are paid directly by the company for impressions to your work

Why HubPages should be your very first step into the online writing world.
If your plan is to create an income for yourself via writing, I can wholeheartedly suggest that Hubpages should be your first step.
Why Hubpages?
For starters their is no application process, unlike most writing platforms you do not have to provide past writing examples, resumes etc.
So once you sign up, you can jump right into learning the publishing format and getting your work out their.
Unlike most writing platforms, Hubpages has a thriving peer generated support forum. People are happy to assist their fellow hubbers in the process of gaining traffic, writing quality hubs and learning the ins and outs of keyword research.
A huge plus, one that you may not comprehend at this point, is the association and reputation of the site will allow you to gain quicker access into affiliate programs, these affiliate programs are in fact how you are paid as an HubPages writer.
You can write on any topic you desire with zero limitations outside of the standard no pornography or hate speech.
By being a Hubpages author with a dozen or so published articles you are virtually assured of becoming accepted by the adsense, ebay affiliate, amazon affiliate and kontera programs.
You can later use these affiliate resources to build your own websites

Why Examiner?
The single most important reason to become an Examiner writer is credibility. Examiner writers have been scooped up by head hunters for some very well paying gigs.
Examiner is resume material. HubPages as its open to all, is not quite so much of a draw. Although, of course if you are writing quality material you can certainly use your Hub portfolio as your writing examples.
Which goes into why you should apply for your Hubpages account and write as soon as possible. Get some experience in online writing and build up a writing portfolio than use you Hub profile to apply for other writing opportunities.
If you are already an active online writer and you have a portfolio, apply for the examiner now, the pay structure is based on impressions generated, Its not openly stated, but from my research and experience I estimate 1-2 cents per page view. This is not a bad rate, if you have experience you probably realize that your very high traffic article usually are also in topics with very low value clicks.
So with the Examiner you can cover hot trends and obvious high traffic terms and know that you will earn a definite income. The value of the backlinks to your own articles shouldnt be discounted either. The Examiner payout level is only 25.00 usd, so its a welcome change from the standard 100.00 from most programs.
There are style guidelines and editors to report to as an Examiner.

What do you think about these programs?
I had looked at the Examiner awhile back and my nearest big city wasn't on their list, so I dismissed it. I just recently looked and it's been added and all the categories are wide open. I have been considering doing it and you have just given me the shove to do it. I'm assuming the link above includes a referral code where you'll get the credit. :) Thanks!
Perfectly timed Hub for me! Thanks so much. Great info.
Great hub - Thanks
I had never heard of this site before - how new is it? It says it's "extending its reach" into Australia and Canada but I couldn't see a category for Oz, so I'm slightly befuddled.
This is great information. I have heard about hub pages being one of the places a lot of people start writing online. I am new to hubpages, but compared to others its fairly straight forward. Thank you.
Interesting article I may have to look into Exaiminer here in Florida. And thanks for the lesson in putting together not only an informative hub, but one that is visually stimulating. Interesting use of screen shot embedded links and referral links, affiliate capsules. Oh hey, great work on the Doc stoc thing.
I'm considering to join HUBpages for blogging and also attempting to make money online. I find your info very helpful and interesting. Keep up the great writes.
Sunforged great info. Here in Canada Examiner.com just went live two days ago, lucky me I was chosen to be the Canada Wedding Examiner. I know weddings inside and out but I need all the help I can get with this internet mumbo jumbo so I'm reading everything I can get my grubby little hands on.
You have a great way of explaining things to a techno-dunce like me so I really appreciate you sharing all your
know-how.
I will be back often until it all sinks in.
kindest regards Zsuzsy
thanks for this hub. I actually found it through She told me. Just goes to show it works and will be signing up for it today.
Interesting hubpage, Examiner's application process is like applying for a very sensitive job. Have a look what you will need to join Examiner.
What happens once I fill out the application?
Once you click the submit button on your application, it goes to a member of the content channel team for which you have applied (Business & Finance, Sports, Pets, etc). They will assess writing style, voice and tone, knowledge within the topic, experience, etc., as well as technical factors such as grammar, spelling and punctuation. Every application is reviewed, though sometimes it can take up to two weeks due to the volume of applicants.
If the Channel Team thinks you would be an asset to the team, you will be contacted via email. Should you choose to become an Examiner, be prepared to submit three critical items within the first few days:
* A photo of yourself for your page
* A brief biographical statement of up to 35 words, written in third person
* Authorization to conduct criminal history background check and identity verification. We do not check credit history or contact former employers.
I'm very new at Examiner.com too. I am having a little difficulty getting page views. I usually Twitter it, with hashtags, and have Dugg a couple and put a couple on SheToldMe and Stumble, but they aren't helping much. I don't find DIGG as helpful anymore since you can't shout. Any advice?
UW - since examiner pays by impression, I find it worth my time to use ALL of the social bookmarking sites to drive traffic .. I was never a fan of digg, but there are literally hundreds of these sites and dozens of popular ones.
I use twitter with good success, but i Have 5k followers, so my exposure is greater than most.
I think the best tip for increased examiner pay is to work in current trends with your topic..if you were say the scottish history examiner, probably not the mostresearched of topics, i may try and sneak in an article on Sean Connerys scottish pride or something else rather trendy or pop culture
