Most common cat diseases
74Despite our impressive seven lives, the truth is that there are days when we also feel down and sick. Sometimes, we show signs that we feel bad and we aren't at 100%, but we are also very lonely and do not want to bother you, we go away and suffer alone, in the hope that what afflicts us pass quickly. Of course, this will not always be our best medicine, so, as always, we rely on our wonderful owners to keep us healthy. Be alert to symptoms that I present to you all to do with the primary diseases affecting cats - and never forget in my annual consultation with Mr. Dr. Veterinary.
Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)
What is it?
A virus
that infects the abdomen, liver, kidneys, brain and nervous system,
creating, in these areas, abscesses and infections. The transmission
can occur in two ways: through contact with the healthy cat feces of a
cat contaminated (eg if there are several cats to share the same
litter) or through breastfeeding, in which the cat infects their
offspring.
Symptoms?
Loss of appetite, weight loss,
anemia, diarrhea, fever, constant, distended abdomen, enlarged lymph
nodes (up to give cold sweats just thinking of.)
Cure?
Unfortunately, this is a fatal disease for us, there is no cure. Once
diagnosed, we can not live much longer. Those who can cope with IPF may
live two years at the most, with the help of a support.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
What is it?
Affecting
only the cats, the FIV is a virus that drastically reduces our immune
capacity, which provides the easy emergence of infections and other
diseases. It is transmitted by an infected cat, particularly in the
transmission of blood, and this type of highly frequent contact during
the "struggle" of where our cats "nibble" cause open wounds.
Symptoms?
Can live many years (five!) Before we discover whether FIV positive,
but if symptoms such as lack of appetite, weight loss, fever, diarrhea
or breathing difficulties persist, you better take me to Dr.
veterinarian to test.
Cure?
Once transmitted, the virus
lodges itself in your body forever. There is no cure, but we can live a
normal life and long, since our owner provides us with a healthy and
balanced diet, supplemented with vitamin supplements, to ensure that
our vaccines are always up to date, remaining always attentive to our
condition physical, and, of course, keep us in the house (do not worry,
we like to!) to avoid the risk of being sick and not able to infect any
of our countrymen.
Feline Urologic Syndrome (SUF)
What is it?
Encompasses a number of inflammatory problems in the urinary tract
of cats, including cystitis (inflammation of the bladder), infection
(the blood, mucus and other products associated with the inflamed area
provides the multiplication of bacteria), urolithiasis / lock utretral
(the crystallization of minerals and irritation of the bladder and
urethra causing the formation of stones that can obstruct or impede
the outflow of urine), uremia (accumulation of waste intoxicating the
blood, which is very dangerous and the inability to urinate is the
accumulation of urine in bladder and the inability of the kidneys
eliminate waste).
Symptoms?
A great difficulty in passing urine (even small quantities!) Or
the inability to do so completely. If you find that not urinate in the
usual place or if my urine is smeared with blood, take me to Dr.
Veterinary! In the case of uremia, there are other symptoms -
depression, vomiting, weakness and collapse - which can lead to coma or
death.
Cure?
Being a very common disease in cats is easily treated !,
Starting with the administration of appropriate medications and that Dr
Veterinary revenue. Only in extreme cases do I need a surgical
intervention (since I go visit.) To avoid the SUF completely, just some
simple care: a healthy diet, high-quality diets, the intake of too much
water, environment and anti-stress anti-disease.
Diabetes
What is it?
Diabetes is a disease caused by the
increase of blood glucose, or blood sugar. However, it is best defined
as the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin, the hormone that
regulates levels of sugar in the blood. As the glucose will accumulate,
and the lack of precious insulin, the body tries to eliminate it from
different ways and there are different symptoms. Apart from genetic
predisposition, diabetes attacks mainly obese cats.
Symptoms?
Normally, this disease shows up in cats from six years of age,
manifesting itself through an excessive thirst, which leads to urinate
more than usual, along with weight loss, despite their appetite normal,
however that may have increased.
Cure?
As in any
situation related to health, the earlier the disease is detected, the
sooner you begin to treat it properly. Fortunately for us (and for you
too!) Diabetes is a condition that can be perfectly controlled! How? I
have to take insulin and follow a specific diet for the rest of my
life.
Obesity
What is it?
One in ten cats is obese, or has more weight (have to
do with the dual eat and sleep?) And the causes are several: sedentary
lifestyle, many sweets and remains of food in the diet, leave the plate
of food always at our disposal, to give to eat between meals or every
time that we ask (yes, we do that better than anyone.)
Symptoms?
This nutritional imbalance which is evidenced by the fast accumulation
of unwanted and unhealthy fats, can have harmful effects in the long
term: diabetes, lung problems, heart problems, joint problems and
locomotion. And any of these diseases is greatly reduced our hope of
life (or lives in the other six can save here.)
Cure?
There is no other choice but to instill good habits in your everyday
cat ... I do not know if I love what I am reading, but as the other:
the first is strange is after entrails! Establish a fixed schedule for
meals, to be only two per day, and encourage the cats to play and some
regular exercise.
Feline leukemia virus (FeLV)
What is it?
Such as FIV, FeLV is also imunodepressiv, dranning on our immune
system, gradually, the ability to defend itself against the more
mundane diseases or infections, these can be often fatal. Besides a
higher risk of infections contracted in many, the FeLV is also
associated with the development of tumors or leukemia deaths. This
virus, which can only be transmitted between cats, it sends the saliva,
tears, urine, feces or through the milk, at the stage of lactation.
Symptoms?
The discovery of the virus FeLV is usually preceded by symptoms
such as loss or lack of appetite, anemia, diarrhea, chronic respiratory
disease, chronic infections of the mouth, persistent and recurrent
abscesses. However, about 25 to 30% of infected cats reject the virus
and thus prevent infection, approximately 30% has a high concentration
of virus in the blood, the risk of lymphoma or other disease associated
with FeLV, the remaining 40% develop an infection that will eventually
pass, but become carriers of the virus, which can be easily activated
if our immune system is weakened or exposed to other diseases. I have
hair all standing up just to think ...
Cure?
There is still no cure, depending on palliative care and some
basic care such as good food and some vitamin supplements, avoid
physical contact with other animals, not sharing feed, water fountains,
toys and litter and keep us indoors. On average, a carrier of this
virus live two years, but there are studies that show a survival rate
of three and a half years to about 83% of cats. However, there is a
vaccine against FeLV that your cat can and must lead.
