The high-performance Nokia N900 mobile computer phone

Updated on July 1, 2017

Nokia has launched its latest high performance Nokia N900 mobile computer phone with Maemo technology.

Maemo has been introduced by Nokia as “an advanced Linux-based operating system designed to run on high-end Nokia mobile computers. As this is an open-source platform, it enables the Maemo community to freely modify and continually develop software as part of a shared goal: to bring added value to all Maemo users.”

Maemo is an open platform that runs on open devices. It has Linux at its core, but Maemo also has plenty of other software components maintained by communities of open-source developers. The platform is based on well-known technologies that are widely used in the free software community. Best of all, you can benefit from the work done by other developers as soon as you take your Maemo device out of the box.”

The principle guiding the development of Maemo is that it will always remain a truly collaborative effort. Maemo was not simply created by a small group of Nokia engineers. Instead it has required the creative talents of the wider developer community over many years. The Maemo creative team is bigger than you might think: over 19,000 members working on more than 800 projects. And this number is growing all the time. In the future, the aim is to make maemo.org a creative hub that enables users, developers, and designers to openly collaborate on all things Maemo.”

The concept behind the N900 has been to enable the user to experience a proper desktop-like experience in a pocket-size device.

The N900 is geared up to let the user browse the web just like on a PC, with a browser based on Mozilla technology. This means that websites look exactly as they would appear on a desktop computer. With Adobe Flash 9.4 support, watching online video and enjoying online apps is also made possible. Nokia promises that N900 will deliver the best pocket-friendly online experience to date with speedy internet access, via HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity.

José-Luis Martinez who is the Vice President of Nokia for N Series says “the Nokia N900 has generated a lot of interest since its public launch in August, which has been reflected in the device preorders. What’s exciting is the Maemo software, which takes its cues from the desktop computer and offers a full browsing experience like no other handset. We believe the Nokia N900 will be a very compelling device for people who are passionate about technology.”

Explaining about the browser technology with Maemo, Mr. Anssi Vanjoki, the Executive Vice President of Nokia says “with Linux software, Mozilla-based browser technology and now also with cellular connectivity, the Nokia N900 delivers a powerful mobile experience. The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo and we’ll continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the internet and the mobile phone, and it is great to see that it is evolving in exciting ways.”
