North Carolina Coastal Fishing Piers - Memories Are Made Here
There are several fine fishing piers along the North Carolina coast. Many anglers consider their favorite pier to be like an old friend and look forward to visiting it each year. Many family memories have been made on these piers. Below is a brief profile of each coastal pier:
Northern North Carolina Fishing Piers
Avalon Fishing Pier - Kill Devil Hills, NC
Originally built in the 1950s, the Avalon Pier is 705 feet long and has a snack bar and tackle shop with bait and rentals. The pier closes during the winter months. Lights enable 24 hour fishing during the peak season.
Nags Head Fishing Pier - Nags Head, NC
This 750 foot long pier is one of the Outer Banks' most popular piers. The pier also features a tackle shop with bait and a restaurant with a great view. The pier is open seasonally from Spring to Fall and offers night fishing.
Jennette's Fishing Pier - Nags Head, NC
Originally constructed in 1939 by Walton Jennette, this is the oldest pier on the Outer Banks. Hurricane Isabel destroyed it in 2003, however, reconstruction to withstand hurricanes is underway. Owned and operated by the North Carolina Aquarium Society.
Outer Banks Fishing Pier - Nags Head, NC
The 600 foot Outer Banks Pier is open 24 hours a day and features a tackle shop with bait and equipment rentals. The pier is well known for its family-friendly atmosphere and grill. Located in South Nags Head, it is the fishing pier nearest to Oregon Inlet.
Hatteras Island Fishing Piers
Hatteras Island Fishing Pier - Rodanthe, NC
The 850 foot Rodanthe Pier is located in Rodanthe. It has withstood many storms and keeps fishermen coming back year after year. The pier features a snack bar with pool tables and tackle shop with bait and rentals. It is open seasonally from April to December and occasionally during the offseason on weekends (weather permitting).
Avon Fishing Pier - Avon, NC
The 600 foot long pier provides some of the best red drum fishing in the world. The World All-Tackle Record for red drum, weighing in at over 94 pounds, was caught about 200 yards from the pier in 1984. The pier also has a tackle shop and a snack shop. It is closed during the winter months.
Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier - Frisco, NC
This pier is referred to locally as the Frisco Pier. It provides good access to Hatteras' south beach, which is known for its world-class fishing. This pier is a popular destination for king mackerel fishing. It is open seasonally from late March through December. A snack shop and a tackle shop with live bait and gear rentals are located on the premises.
Crystal Coast Fishing Piers
Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier - Emerald Isle, NC
The pier is well lit for night fishing. It has cleaning stations and a tackle shop with bait. At 1,000 feet long, it is a great destination for king fishermen. Emerald Isle is currently trying to save the pier from development.
Oceana Fishing Pier - Atlantic Beach, NC
The Oceana is a combination pier and family resort in one. It has a motel and huge oceanfront playground for the kids. Motel guests can fish on the pier for free in the offseason. The Oceana pier has a restaurant, game room, and tackle shop with rod and reel rental.
Topsail Island Piers
Surf City Ocean Pier - Surf City, NC
The 937 foot long Surf City Pier is great for king anglers. It features a huge octagon at its end, cleaning stations, and livewells. The pier also has a grill, a tackle shop with bait, and a game room.
Jolly Roger Fishing Pier - Topsail Beach, NC
The 850 foot pier is located on the south end of the island and is open from March through November. The complex also contains a motel, convenience store, and bait store.
Seaview Fishing Pier - North Topsail Beach, NC
The 1,000 foot long pier is one of the longest in the state. The pier features king mackerel fishing and a tackle shop with bait. The restaurant will serve your catch. The seasonal pier is open from March through November.
Northern Cape Fear Area Fishing Piers
Johnnie Mercer's Pier - Wrightsville Beach, NC
Family owned since 1969, this pier is 945 feet long. It is the first concrete pier in the state and was built to withstand sustained 200 mph hurricane winds. The pier features a restaurant and arcade with indoor and outdoor seating.
Carolina Beach Fishing Pier - Carolina Beach, NC
Owned and operated by the Phelps family for many years, the 700 foot long pier has a grill, snackbar, and game room. It also offers a cleaning station with sink and a tackle shop with rentals and bait.
Kure Beach Pier - Kure Beach, NC
This venerable pier is one of the oldest in the state. It was rebuilt to 712 feet long ion 1997. Tackle and bait are available.
Southern Cape Fear Area Fishing Piers
Ocean Crest Pier - Oak Island, NC
This pier was voted best in the state in 2005 by Fisherman's Post. It is 1,000 feet long and is great king mackerel fishing with a "T" at the end and community livewells.
Yaupon Beach Fishing Pier - Oak Island, NC
Originally built in 1955, this pier is the tallest in the state at 27 feet above sea level. The pier holds the record catch for any pier in the state, with a 1150 lb. state record tiger shark in 1966.
Holden Beach Fishing Pier - Holden Beach, NC
This pier is an excellent destination for families. The pier features live bait, grill and snack bar, and a gift shop.
Ocean Isle Beach Pier - Ocean Isle, NC
Friendly people and a well-stocked tackle shop with rentals make this pier a great location Ocean Isle anglers. The pier has a gameroom for kids and a small grill.
Sunset Beach Fishing Pier - Sunset Beach, NC
Good for king fishermen, this pier is 900 feet long and has great ammenities including bait, rod rentals, and cleaning sinks. The pier also has a grill amd game room. It is convenient for elderly or disabled fishermen as well. Electric scooters are provided for those who need them.
