Our Perception of God, Who He Is, What He Looks Like and Where He Lives
Who is God?
This topic reminds me of the days when my heart was full of questions about God and His nature. I earnestly tried to find out who God was. I believe He led me to truths in the scriptures which enlightened me on the issue above. It also shed much light on the deity of God.
The word of God says that God is a spirit and takes on a tripartite formation of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but remains in unity as one. To comprehend this better, God has also created us in a tripartite formation of body, soul and spirit, yet we are one in person.
God is a Spirit
What is a spirit? A spirit is an invisible supernatural entity, without material form or substance (Incorporeal), which can become visible or audible to human beings. A spirit can take on any form and shape, but prefers to dwell in the most intelligent of beings, that is man. A spirit’s movements cannot be hindered by any object, and does not need to pass through your door in order to enter your house.
We serve a gentle caring God who prefers to enter through the door. God in spirit is found everywhere at the same time. You do not have to queue to receive ministry from God. He can judge all humans in the world at the same time. By spirit, He is in heaven, on earth and under the earth at the same time. Our minds are too limited to embrace the meaning concealed herein.
His Creation
What does God look like?
No one has seen God. Scripture reveals hints about Gods appearance in visions and dreams. God chooses to show Himself to man in human form. He reveals in Genesis 1: 26 “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:…” This implies that he has created our spirit in the image of His spirit.
God has revealed Himself to man through miracles, judgement, dreams and visions in which He may or may not speak. The most vivid description of God’s form appears in Ezekiel 1:1-28. Verse 26 to 28 says “…He who sat on what appeared to be a throne and was in the likeness and appearance of a man. From His waist upwards, he seemed to be all glowing bronze, dazzling like fire, and from his waist downwards he seemed to be entirely aflame, and there was a halo like a rainbow all around him…”.
Ezekiel found it difficult to describe what he saw. There are not enough words to describe how God is. God kindly allowed Moses to move close enough to Him, but totally refused to let him see his form. To respond to his servant’s persistence, He covered Moses’s face and only allowed him to see His backside as God passed along, for it is written, you cannot see God’s face and live. We can only liken his form.
How do we perceive God?
In His spiritual form, the invisible God has to reveal Himself to man. God chooses to reveal and also conceal some things relating to Him, such that we cannot totally know how He is entirely. The book of Deuteronomy 4:12 reveals that Moses heard the voice of God but didn’t see God.
Our perception of God is purely spiritual in nature. You have to rise beyond your physical body and soul in order to perceive God in your spirit. Remember, there is a prescribed way in which you can approach the throne of mercy. Humble yourself and approach Him with praise and worship until He reveals Himself to you.
The Nature and Greatness of God
The nature and greatness of God spells out several characteristics, which include;
Omniscience – He is wise and all-knowing. This implies that we can entrust our lives to Him.
Omnipresence – He is everywhere. Hence we can pray to Him anywhere and be heard.
Omnipotence – He holds together everything. He is powerful and strong.
Eternal – He is everlasting, the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega
Unchanging – He is the same yesterday, today and forever.
God is good, holy, righteous, just, loving, merciful, faithful, true and giving.

Where does God live?
Where does God live? God’s physical abode is described in 1Kings 8:30, Psalms 2:4, Psalms 115:3, 2Corinthians12:2 as the Third Heaven. Heaven is God’s dwelling place. It is the place of God’s glory Acts 7:55. Heaven is the home for the righteous (believing) dead 2Cor 5:1. Heaven is the future home of all believers as is written in Revelations 7:9-10.
The nature of heaven is a product of the nature of God. There is no night or sunlight in heaven because God produces all the light that is needed in heaven, Revelations 22:5. Heaven is a place where everybody should aspire to go. When you go to heaven, you will surely see how God looks like. Enoch pleased God so much that he never died but was instantly plucked into heaven. There are people like you in heaven.
