Pamper and primping for Guys?
When I saw this topic I thought Uh oh, how do we play this one? Yes it is quite normal for the ladies in our lives to :
- Have a great hairdo.
- Have a hair makeover and change colour
- Have a nail Makeover
- Have a facial
- Have a body scrub.
- Get a hot stone massage
- Get an Indian head massage
- Get a foot makeover and have the toenails done.
- Go to a spa for a couple of days and get it all done
Now where does this leave us, normally macho and pretty much aggressively, male oriented guys. Even the word rejuvenation does not come easily onto the lips of a sixty plus vintage male.
Indeed, would we do any of the foregoing and if we did would we admit to it. So you see this is a pretty tricky topic.
An evening spa visit as a gift
Actually in some respects this is a topic fairly close to my heart. Last year about this time my dearly beloved had a birthday. In fact for some strange reason she has one every year about the same time. I decided that an evening visit to a spa would be a great present. So far so good, now for the research , pricing etc. I got this going and made a few calls, settling on a place called Mangwanani Spa. This is an African themed evening Spa, which includes a welcome drink at the assembly point, a Bus ride to the Spa in the bush north of Johannesburg, a healthy(?) supper, light wines and a number of selected treatments including:
- a facial massage
- a neck and upper body scrub.
- a hot stone massage
a Indian head and scalp massage without aromatic herbs and oils
The assembly point is at an up Market casino complex in Northern Johannesburg called MonteCasino. I now arranged a date (not an easy task as they were fully booked up) for dearly beloved and was asked the “loaded question”. Would I be making a “couples booking?”. I said no this was a present for my wife and a treat. I now presented the voucher etc suitably packaged in a present to dearly beloved. She was delighted but asked wether I was coming along. I said no this is a girl thing. She said no they have a couples thing look at the brochures. Why do I sense a conspiracy ad some clever marketing at work here?
I reluctantly agreed to accompany her and then had to change bookings, dates etc.
Giving in to the moment
The day finally dawned and off we went. Me, somewhat heel draggingly reluctant, feeling somewhat foolish. The assembly drink was pleasant enough and thank goodness when I furtively looked around, saw that there were quite a few guys present. We got on the bus and rode off into the sunset (literally as it was dusk).
Somewhat more relaxed after the pre-prandial drink, we arrived at the spa and were welcomed by a singing chorus of traditionally clad tribal lasses. Another drink on arrival ( I could get to like this health thing) and so to robing!. We had to remove our clothing both outer wear and underwear and put on a Spa gown and slippers. We were then led off to the first treatment for a half an hour. This was a hand and facial massage with aromatic oils ,very relaxing , side by side on couches in pairs (the couples were in pairs that is ) and the singletons were arranged on the rest of the couches. Soothing music played and we were pampered.
Dinner
Thereafter, we were led back and had our starters (appetizers for you Americans) consisting of Parma ham and Melon and were then led off for the next treatment which was a neck and back body scrub also accompanied by soothing music , Noah–like, two by two as before.
We were then led back for the dinner main course accompanied by pleasant wines. The main course was ostrich steak and sweet potato (yam) or grilled line fish. After dinner, we were led off for the stone massage, music , two by two etc. We then came back for sweets consisting of fruit salad and yoghurt. We then led off for the final treatment of the night which was an Indian head massage liberally accompanied by aromatic herb oils. You know the routine by now, two’s etc
And so to bed!
By now we were just about asleep and totally relaxed, we were given coffee and friadeses and reluctantly got dressed and trooped back to the bus for the homeward journey. We dozed on the way back to the Casino. If we were smart, we should have planned to overnight at the Casino. As it happened we had to drive home some 30km’s. And finally to bed, totally relaxed and maxed out.
So the question is, is it for guys? Admittedly I enjoyed myself and I would do it again. This could definitely become a guy thing!
Well Is it ok for guys to pamper and primp?

My husband isn't really the primping type...but he does love to steam himself clean and uses way more hair spray than I do. Still, I think it's fun when a guy indulges in some pampering...as in his & her massages. Best thing to do on vacation in my opinion!
Nicely done Sixty and a big hug to you too!
I just had to stop by because I was curious to know something maybe new about myself. I am a woman and why the hell have I never been to a spa, never had my nails or toes done, never had a facial, nothing nada. It must be my turn soon!
JUstmesuzanne Thanks for topping by and making your welcome comments

Thanks for stopping by and commenting,
Great hub! Off to do one about men's skin care, and saw your post, so had to stop by. Often, men feel more restricted about caring for themselves than women, and it's a shame because it benefits everyone (as you found out).
KT pdx I, of course, only found this out very late in life. I also ,regularly, have my toe nails done too. Old men can have such ugly feet, Then they were Sandals or flip flops, Ugh!
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting!
Linked your hub in my new one. :) My grandpa gets a pedicure, too. He hated the way his toes looked, so he goes to my grandma's salon and has his nails trimmed and toe and foot callouses filed. Foot baths and pumice stones work wonders, as well.
That place sounds fantastic and YES pampering is for boys too. A well cared man (including nicely done hands and feet) is more atratctive than one that doesn't care about his appearance. My husband is not very much into pampering but he can never resist if I invite him for a sauna/hamman treat including a private massage ;-)
No doubt your husband looks forward to those "sauna/hamman treat including a private massage" treatments with great anticipation!
Thanks for taking the trouble to stop by and comment. Much appreciated.
Great hub Sixty, Saunas are out for me now, post spinal fusion, but used to love them after a workout at the gym.
Hi Rodney. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I see how spinal fusion may affect you somewhat!
Sixty I think you have done a wonderful job in convincing men that they too, are to be pampered and well-taken care of by someone other than their mate. This is androgyny at its best and every guy should indulge the senses. Thanks for sharing and make a trip to my page just for the boys . . .

Nothing wrong with a guy pampering himself. Glad you have an open mind about this. Love the line about how oddly enough your beloved has her birthday around the same time each year. Very cute line!
enlightenedpsych2 Thanks for stopping by And commenting. I will be looking into your hub too!
Sweetie Pie Glad you appreciate the humour, thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Very nice, and yummy, you deserve it!! I do this every few months and should every month if I could afford it. Tension builds up in the neck and head so they are on to something!! What a great memory and day "out" for you and your beloved. My husband would never go, but I do enjoy it - my muscles are hard from daily work stress. This is a real treat - I am envious of your great spoil!! Dinner, music, dancers? mmmm! I like it!! =)) almost worth the trip to South Africa for that kind of treatment!
Hi Marisue Thank once again for stopping by and adding your invaluable comments, which are always much appreciated!Yes it was a great spoil and visitors do take advantage of such excursions. If you ever come it could be one of the highlights of your trip. BTW if you want some advice on planning a trip see my new "serious" hub.
Sixtyorso - I burst out laughing ."Last year about this time my dearly beloved had a birthday. In fact for some strange reason she has one every year about the same time." So what do you want your wife to be born on Feb 29th then..LOL
I would still prefer men who don't spend as much time as women in parlours. He should comb his hair and clean shaven with deo spray (also maybe occasional cream to take care of the skin but not the whole routine)...hehe
Great Hub.. After all they are also humans, & should be allowed to use all these things...But in my opinion men are not meant for that thing..............
Sandra- I was just kidding and they are free to groom themselves to look their best. I was just pulling his leg...hehe
HI CW and Sandra Thanks for stopping by and commenting. CW you can pull my leg but preferably both with a suitable scented essential oil. rub gently and sensuously. Thanks!
sixtyorso- I will forward your request to your wife and she will do what is necessary (maybe pull your ears and that too not gently)...hehe
Oh no because of my dearly beloved's back condition and because she is kind she will pay a professional masseuse to look after me. For our last anniversary she paid for me to have a hot stone massage at a day Spa while she had a facial.
You know, I'm just afraid of loosing a bit of my manhood by getting pampered. It's kinda like a scooter... fun till your friends find out!
some kind of gyus also like this stuff not all
mdvaldosta You are quite right but once you tried it you will like and to hell with what the other guys think. It's definitely a try it yourself before criticising. Thanks fior stopping by and commenting.

HAPPY NEW YEAR SIXTYORSO
the3rdalien Why thank you kind Sir,your comments are truly appreciated! I wish you and yours a safe, healthy, prosperous and happy new year too!
Definately so. I like soft skin caressing my tender and soft body parts. None of that rough stuff for me. I took my hubby to get a pedicure and he asted as it he wa the only man that dd that! I asked the person doing the pedicure if other men do this and she told us lots of them do! I have had a body massage and the whole bit once--greastes present my duaghter's could have given me by the way--and while there I saw lots of men--not as many women---there to get massages.
When we were given these bodies we areexpected to take care fo them---whatever it takes.
Lady Guinivere
Absolutely! even though it took me many years before it became a reality in my life!
Funny how this came up and my family had their Christmas yesterday and I got a One Hour Massage Session! How cool is that?!!
Lady Guinivere Serindipity reigns supreme! Enjoy!
Excellent hub. Well written on a great topic. I love luxurious baths with lavender bubbles while I read murder mysteries. And I used to get a Swedan, an Ayurvedic treatment that starts with an hour massage, with essential oils percolating through the room. Then about 20 minutes in a wooden steam box, that looks like a coffin or a tanning bed with a hole in one end for your head to stick out. You lie on wooden slats, the hinged top part of the coffin is closed over you, and steam comes out under the slats. The attendant provides you cool water to drink, and periodically wipes your forehead and face with a cool cloth. Then it's into another room, another massage table where she sprinkles your body with rice or barley powder, gently massages it in -- to soak up sweat and toxins -- and then brushes it off with a very soft brush. The treatment ends with a very light, fingertip massage, then covered with a blanket and left to just "be" for about 10 minutes. Heaven! Of course men should be pampered. Thanks for this hub!
Bruce How absolutely true "Of course men should be pampered". I would love to experience the treatment that you described. I think it would be great!

Good Hub, HubMob or not :)
Why thank you Patti you are so kind. Thank you for stopping by and commenting on this hub.
There's a men's spa in the city I live in called Happy Endings. They supposed to give men facials and massages, but I wonder about the title!
Cindy I guess that could be somewhat perverse!
