Quitting Smoking And Lung Cancer

Updated on May 9, 2011

Smoking Causes Lung Cancer

We already know that smoking is the major cause of many, many ailments.  The most serious that I want to talk about today is lung cancer.  When it comes to smoking causing lung cancer this is true in 88% of the time.  When it comes to lung cancer more people lose their lives from it as compared to many other cancers combined.

The more you smoke the more you stand a chance of getting lung cancer.  The trick is to quit smoking because even after many, many years of smoking if you qwuit you stand a great chance of greatly reducing the risk of getting cancer.  The big thing when it comes to lung cancer is being pro active instead of reactive.  In most cases when lung cancer is discovered it is advanced and very difficult to deal with.  The fact is that lung cancer victims have a lower survival rate than most other cancers.

A big cough is a sign to get things looked at.  Other things you may notice is loss of breath, irritated airway.  You may cough up blood, have chest pains and also things like bronchitis will come and go.  Also watch for sudden weight gains and losses.  If the lung cancer is not found it can spread to other parts of the body as well.

A Little About The Lungs

When it comes to your chest cavity there is a pair of organs that take up most of the room and they are your lungs.  You have a lung located on either side of your heart.  I don’t want to get to indepth but it is important you understand a little about how your important organs work.

When you take a brfeath the air is taken from the mouth and through the trachea.  In most cases from there the breath enters the lungs.  The breath does a lot of things including blood flow, oxygen and carbon dioxide delivery and exit.

The airways and lining in the windpipes when it comes to healthy lungs work in a very controlled way.  When lung cancer kicks in cells keep producing nerw ones even when there not needed.  Most people are not going to realize lung cancer over night but damage to the tissues start as soon as you start smoking.  The more you smoke the more your opening your self up for more damage.  Your lungs at the end of the day haver a great impact on your entire body which makes the spread more likely to happen.

Some Causes And Types Of Lung Cancer

We talk about it and you hear it everyday and Im sure no one will argue that smoking is the absolute number one reason people get lung cancer.  There are some other lung cancer causes like second hand smoke, asbestos, other stuff in industry but these are relatively small when it comes back to talking about smoking causing lung cancer.

Cancers are named by the part of the body it affects, thus lung, kidney and bone cancer.  Something fairly interesting is that non smokers rarely get lung cancer.  Also smoking doesn’t help to spread the cancer.  Its just the primary cause.

There really are only two cancers that build there presence when we start talking about the lungs.  They are small cell and non small cell.  When it comes to small cell this is the one that mostly affects smokers.  For the most part the small cell cancer is treated with chemo and radiation while surgery is almost always never an option.  The other bad news item is that surving five years almost never happens.

Many of the non small lung cancers are whats called non small cell.  When getting technical the four types of non small cancer are squamous, adenocarcinoma, large cell and bronchoaveolar.  These if caught early can be dealt with using surgery in most cases.  Most of these cancers are caused from stuff other then smoking.

Time To Quit Smoking

Smoking causes nearly 90% of all lung cancers. It is no doubt the greatest risk of getting cancer. The nice thing is that as soon as you quit you are on your way to reducing your chances of cancer. At the end of the day the best thing to avoid lung cancer is to quit smoking.

At the end of the day everyone who wants to quit smoking may be able to do it cold turkey but most will need help of some kind. It really is okay to need help. The problem is everyone is different thus resulting in different forms of help.

All I can do is tell you to keep trying whatever until you find the help that works. As long as the end result is you are a non smoker.
