Real Work From Home Jobs, Not Internet Scams
93
There are real work from home jobs out there the problem is finding out which ones are legitimate. I have spent the last eight years weeding out the scams and have become quite savvy spotting those that are not legitimate just from looking at their advertisements. The key is if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. You will not get rich from working from home but you can get a pretty good income if you look in the right place. I have found that if you are working from and looking for a salary or full time job you might have to work for more than one company. In a previous hub, Does anybody know of good work at home jobs that are not scams?, I talk about what to beware of as well as some of the same ideas of real work from jobs.
Understand that getting a legitimate work from home job will take time and a bit of research but once you find the right fit it can be a great experience.
What to avoid:
- Jobs that offer huge salaries. There is no way that you are going to make $2,000 a week from any job. So be realistic in what the pay will be. Usually (not all the time) a work from home job is going to offer a little less than other jobs.
- Jobs that want too much information from you right away. I actually have a specific resume that I use for work from jobs that only uses my first initial of my first name, my last name and the city and state that I live in. I do not give out my address or my phone number. If later you find out that the job is legitimate you can provide this information. Most companies understand that you are trying to protect yourself.
- Avoid at all costs any job that asks for your banking information this is a money laundering scam and you could be jailed for being involved. I have heard some pretty scary stories regarding this and it is an easy trap to fall into so please beware.
- You should never have to pay anything for a work from home job. So if the company is asking for money even if it is a small amount there is no need to pay and it is probably a scam. However some companies do ask you to pay for a background check but that is usually after you know much more about the position.
- Understand the difference between work from home jobs and businesses. With businesses there is a start up fee and you usually have to be welling to sell. Most businesses have you get your own client base and it is up to you to make your money. With a work from home job you do the job that the company gives you and you get paid for the job that you do.
Real Work From Home Jobs:
1. Telecommute Friendly Companies – There are numerous telecommute friendly companies. If you currently work for a company or worked for a company you can see if they offer telecommute positions.
2. Freelance Sites – There are also numerous freelance sites such as ODesk and Guru; most of them are free or have a free section. This way you can start out and see if it something that you are interested in.
3. Craigslist and other Job Sites – There are many job sites such as Craigslist. For these you can type in key words or phrases such as telecommute or work from home and see what is offered. But please understand that scammers are out there looking for you so be cautious when searching these sites and refer to what to avoid to save yourself from these scammers.
4. Tutoring - This is somewhat specialized but if you have teaching experience or a degree you can tutor and there are many different tutoring companies out there; tutor.com and brainfuse.com. With teaching experience there are also other work from home positions as well, some only need a degree others need teaching certificates.
5. Data Entry - Data entry is a highly coveted position so the jobs are few and far between but if you happen to luck up on one keep it. Many companies also offer data entry work that you can start out at the company and then after a few months you can work from home. Other more specialized types of data entry are; medical billing and some research positions.
6. Customer Service- There are many different customer service positions with numerous companies as long as you have a computer and phone (specifications depends on the company) then you are all set to go. There are many different types of customer service positions that include in bound or out bound calls and some that even work with sales.
7. Call Centers - Similar to customer service there are many different call center companies looking for work from home workers. Again if you have a computer and a phone set up, most ask for Cable or DSL as well as a second phone line with nothing else on it. There are call centers that are looking for people who can work from home. Some companies that look for call center work from home are 1-800-Flowers and U-Haul.
8. Virtual Secretaries/Assistants – Virtual secretaries and assistants help businesses and people with general office work. There are numerous companies that hire virtual secretaries and set them up with those businesses or people that need them. You can also find some virtual assistant work through Guru.com.
9. Appointment Setters – Appointment setters simply set appointments for companies. Usually this position is expanded to do other tasks for the company as well depending on the need of the company. Some also include telemarketing so be aware if telemarketing is not something that you want to do.
10. Others - There are many other types of positions out there and companies looking for stay-at-home moms and dads, disabled peoples, students and other specifications for their positions. You just have to be very diligent about looking and making sure that the job being offered is not a scam.
So yes there are work from home jobs that are not Internet scams the difficulty is in finding them. You have to be diligent in your work and very careful about the information that you give out in your search. Make sure to ask as many questions as you need to feel secure about the job. If the company does not answer your questions chances are they are not legitimate. Weed out the scams to find that perfect or close to perfect job for you. Remember it takes time but it will come with patience and perseverance.
Good luck!

GT - I only wish everyone could know their options like you. I think it is important to understand the roles in your field that can help you to figure out what types of jobs you can do from home. Thanks for the suggestion. And hey I am dreaming right along with you.
I'm getting extra bucks from these online jobs. I'm currently maintaing just one though because hubbing is on top of my priorities right now as you may have noticed! LOL
The scams proliferate the net and good thing for me, I have been in the industry for so long (more than a decade - i started very young of course! wink) I can never be fooled - I hope! :D
Really great hub...
Cris, I am glad that you cannot be fooled. I talk to so many people that have been scammed it is just sad. After doing this for many years its easy to see the signs I just wish I could stop people from sending money, usually I hear from people after they have spent hundreds of dollars.
Ethanol - Thank you so much.
That's a really nice hub Triplet Mom. Thanks for providing such a coherent list of possible things to do from home! I'm exploring the tutoring option at the moment, and also thinking about franchises. This is another option that lots of mums do, although it's not all 'at home' work. I'm not yet convinced that you can make much money from them, but am going to investigate further as there are some interesting ideas out there.
Thanks for giving me a good answer. Great Hub!
Yes, it is a good hub. CL is the best but there's more competition so one may want to try other top online sites like backpage
Moon Daisy - Thanks. There are a lot more online tutoring and teaching sites popping up that I have been researching. Most online tutors that I know work for a few of the companies so that they are able to work 40 hours a week. Thanks again.
RV - Thanks for posting this question! There are too many people being scammed its horrible!
ocbill - There are more sites and better sites than CL I agree, no matter what site you choose its important to beware!! Thanks for your comments.
Triplet Mom ,thanks for the useful information. I have done some research for online at home jobs but they never really panned out. I am retired and have experience and knowledge in telecommunications, engineering and provisoniing. If I found something along those lines I would be delighted.
Laringo - Hmm seems that there should be some type of work from home jobs with your experience. Or maybe at least work from home 50 - 75% of the time. I have limited knowledge in that area but I wish you luck in your search.
That was great info. Thanks!
Thank you Gillsie. Glad you enjoyed!!
great hub.
I might add a couple more - transcription typing, and marking exam papers, perhaps?
great info. thank you so much.
Londongirl - Great ideas, I forgot about being a transcriptionist but they do have a lot of those types of positions on Guru.com. I left out test graders because usually that is temporary work or seasonal work.
I only thought of that because I use a digital transcription service for some stuff - mostly court judgments and long notes.
Like today, for example, I took judgment this afternoon in a case I was in this morning, and I dictate from my notes, upload it, and it's typed and emailed back to me.
The company I use is very good, and the typists work from home.
Wow, London Girl that sounds like a great service. I am sure that there are many around.
I'm sure there are, and it wouldn't be a bad thing to do, if the organisation is Kosher.
This is the agency I use (I don't profit or benefit from them, other than as a client)
http://www.fingertipstyping.co.uk/
Thanks for the link LG maybe someone can benefit from them!
I am glad that you cannot be fooled. I talk to so many people that have been scammed it is just sad. After doing this for many years its easy to see the signs I just wish I could stop people from sending money, usually I hear from people after they have spent hundreds of dollars.
Gracy, I am the same way. People usually come to me after they have spent hundreds and are frustrated too. It is truly sad that criminals are taking advantage of those that do not know.
Very good question in your hub. One easy way to start is write about what you are passionate about or simply what you can offer someone who yearns for advise.
Anything from your favorite recipes to how to build a tree house. You can write an e-book and submit it to an article directory such as Ezine Articles dot com. when an internet publisher likes what you wrote they will ask you if they can use it in their site and you can get residual income from it. You write it, they sell it and you get paid..you don't need a website.. It could work for you and the only thing it will cost you is your time.
I hope this helps...
p.s. there is money to be made from home, but do your homework first. You don't need to spend a lot of money to be successful.
Thanks,
mjgooding
mgooding - Great advice its important when you do write to write about what you know and love so that it will show through in your writing. I would amend your p.s. statement however, I believe and found that you really do not need to spend any money to be successful working online unless you are doing a work from home business. Thanks for your response.
Very informative...Thanks!
you are right but you know not all the people found the right kind of a online job for themself. You can find a lot of flashy lines on the internet to get someone attracted but what about the legitemacy of that perticulor business?
So what u mentioned here is really helpful for those who finding jobs online.
Regards
Vishal
Thanks for your comments Vishal. I agree you have to be diligent in your search and be very weary of any business unless you know about them. There are a lot of scammers out there.
nice info..
we need to be more carefull about these kind of problems.
Thanks for sharing this. it's very useful. By keeping in mind the points, you illustrate.
Thank you d_admiralz and Amelie!!
Many of the work from home opportunities are better off when you get in on a ground level. A great example is VA, there are so many out there now vying for jobs it is hard to get started.
Thanks for the great hub! You make good points about what to avoid. There is still a part of me that hopes to find the ideal high-dollar venue for working at home. I've had to modify my expectations into going for multiple income streams.
In addition to the things you point out to be wary of, I also read the Terms of Service, privacy policies, and whatever other fine print there is. Many popular opportunities, such as Helium, take all rights to every article you submit, forever. The more aware you are of what you're agreeing to, the better choices you can make.
Great point also about not revealing too much info at first. I quit a couple survey "opportunities" when the first thing they wanted from me was to sample a credit report site -- by giving all my credit info! Unfortunately, I suspect they get a lot of people to do that. I also use a separate email account with a variation on my name to keep my biz and personal accounts from being spammed, and so the scammers can't link anything I send them to my legal identity.
I've saved myself a lot of time by running the name of any company through Google -- often complaints will come up. Also, if the company doesn't exist -- no street address, no articles about them... that's a huge red flag.
Another great resource is www.ripoffreport.com, which offers a search function and alphabetical listing. So far, every too-good offer I've checked there has had numerous reports from people who got burned.
The more people report scammers, the better for all of us who are doing, and looking for, legitimate business.
Thanks for this post and discussion!
Very good info. In a former life, I worked for Ziff Davis doing software reviews. I alos worked writing articles online. Both we done in between careers and hepled me get through tough spots. There are alot of scams out there and people get desperate when they lose their job.
This is really interesting I've been trying to figure out how to be my own boss for the longest time now. Thumbs up for the article.
Camping Dan - I have to agree getting in on the ground level is best. When I started tutoring I was one of 150 or so for the company I work for. Now I am one of well over 3,000 huge difference.
Hike Guy - You make several valid points here and some really important suggestions. One should never give out their credit information especially when looking for a job. I have heard of many people doing this. Getting a separate email specifically for job hunting is a GREAT idea I also suggest getting a separate checking account as well this way you are protected as well. Also running company names through Google is a good measure. I would still be leary though because some scammers are now usuing legitimate business names to try and scam users. And yes we all need to report, report and keep reporting so that others are not scammed.
Retirementhelp - I am glad that you have had some success working from home that is wonderful.
Orion - Thank you and Good luck in your search!!
Thank you all for your comments and helpful tips!
great hub....and excellent information.....i have enjoyed reading it.the truth you said about $2000 salary a week is really hunbuk...your information is excellent...thanx for sharing.keep it up....i dint get chance to read your previous one but surely read when get chance.
I love working from home. I work a day job but sometimes I stay home and telecommute. Staying my PJs is great.
Britney - Thank you very much!
Orionsky - Yes working from home has its advantages its cool that you get to do it!
Very nice hub, thank you for the good advice!
Thank you Alana. I really do hope it helps.
Thanks for the tips, need to be carfeul, all os uf, that's for sure :)
Esocial - That is so true. We all have to be careful. I also think its important to watch out for others so that they do not get scammed. Thanks for the comments.
Great advice. We all need to do our due diligence.
Thank you Ryan, I agree completely!!
PS Cute baby!!
I'm going to have to agree with the majority here, Great advice indeed.
Thank you gadgetmang!!
hey thanks very informative hub..
i was looking for this information because searching for online home based jobs i found jobs but most of them are scam, i realise when i sign up and got nothing like as a form filling or data entry job....
again thanks for ur information....
great article i like it alot!!
Tushar - Thank you very much. Finding data entry positions from home is very difficult. Data entry positions are the most coveted type of position and they go quickly. This is why it is the scammed type of position as well.
Matiskater - Thank you very much!
So many people fall for the scams. Thank you for pointing out the fact that there are legit ones out there.
Thanks so much for doing the research and for writing this hub. It's a big time saver for people looking for the "silver bullet" who might otherwise be tempted to fall for get-rich-quick-at-home schemes.
As for me, I've found my work at home paradise. It's called Hub Pages!
RGraf - It is so true I have heard too many horror stories and it makes me very sad. I want everyone to find something that they can do without getting scammed.
MM - Thank you. After years of searching through the bad ones I think its about time to share. Yes Hub Pages does ROCK!!
Triplet Mom,
Thanks so much for the tips and I have already checked out guru.com and am very interested. I appreciate your great use of examples as well as your sound and competent advice.
Crammartin - Thank you, I am so glad that this was helpful. I hope you are able to find what you are looking for.
HIKEGUY: "I've saved myself a lot of time by running the name of any company through Google -- often complaints will come up. Also, if the company doesn't exist -- no street address, no articles about them... that's a huge red flag."
That's a good tip...I signed up for a few Paid-to-Read sites...I may run them through Google, and if there's ANY that seem a bit dodgy, I'll cancel my accounts with them.
BardScribe - That is great information thanks for sharing!!
Be careful with Craigslist there are lots of scams on there.
Ashley - Thank you very much that is true, it is extremely easy to be scammed on craigslist. Again if it sounds too good to be true it is most likely a scam. I am also seeing a few scammers on Monster.com. It is wise to be very cautious.

thank you for this. everyday so many people get scammed. I really believe in making money online but because of these scams, people are really skeptical.
Thanks for making this information avaiable.
Mattressguru - Thank you. It is truly sad but understandable that people are gunshy. There are so many great online jobs out there. I hope that scammers do not ruin it for everyone.
Great, informative hub. It is true there are many scams out there, you just need to use common sense. If it sounds too good to be true, it must be. http://onlinemoneysolutions.bravehost.com/
Thank you for your comments mcstir. I appreciate them although I cannot be an advocate for your link since it asks for money.
Awesome hub!
You really nailed it here! There are many opportunities out there to make extra moeny but they are also twice as many people who try to fool you into a scam. Thank you for providing this list, it will be a huge help to people who are looking for a way to earn from their own homes.
Thank you Coach Tim. I really hate to hear about people who are scammed and hate seeing how many people are out there trying to scam others. It sickens me especially when those that are truly innocent and uninformed are taken advantage of.
Nice hub
Real Work From Home Jobs Not Internet Scams
it Was very well written, I support you, welcome to my hub
Thank you ontheway!!
Its important to have bloggers like you triplet mom to provide accurate information to help others who are looking for ways to make extra money, I agree that if you have a specialized skill it will be easier to find work online as a freelancer. Due to the economy right now more companies that are cutting back and trying to save money are going to look to hiring independent contractors, freelancers and those who can telecommute, because it is more cost effective for them and more financially beneficial to the ones who need a more flexible schedule working from home. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Research Analyst. I think its a very important subject. I have been seeing an increase in legitimate online jobs along with an increase in scammers. With the economy I have to agree that there are more companies that are looking to cut costs and looking for other forms of workers such as independent contractors and freelancers.
Real Work From Home Jobs Not Internet Scams
Thanks for this. It's really helpful!
Great info
great hub...good read...
there are real work at home programs.. just search don't get discouraged by all the scams.. I've also been scamed.
The fact that you use the verbiage work from home "programs" makes me a bit skeptical. Regardless everyone should be very careful looking for work at home jobs and know that they should never have to pay anything to work from home. That is the number one thing to remember.
A great hub. I wish I'd read this before I emailed my cv in response to what I thought was a legitimate job add. The job was genuine but the ad was placed by a company claiming that they could sell me a genuine online job database with the job details in. I shall be very careful in future. Thank you.
Tiger - Sorry that it happened to you. Please do be careful. Scammers are getting more and more tricky these days.
Triplet mom,
First of all great hub. I wanted to know, have you heard about the Google revolution work from home site? If so, what have you heard and are they legit or scammers? I just came across it and was interested in trying it. Unlike most people they use there personal banking cards to do these transactions for shipping cost, I have gotten scammed with this so, I have an alternate card that I use for anything I purchase online. It is a prepaid visa gift card. This way I have control of my personal banking info. But that aside, I am highly interested to hear if they are legit or not. Any info from you aor anyone aware PLEASE....it would be appreciated. Thanks
Sexyeyes - Thank you. I am not familiar with this. If you have to pay or purchase, I would stay away.
I have bought home jobs directory, its a good product overall, you can readmy review here =>> http://mypsreview.com/2009/06/home-jobs-directory-

Very good information!
This is really great
Thank you!
I like the tip that you should never pay for a work at home job.
Guru - Thank you. Its the truth so many scams ask for money upfront and I have heard of too many people getting burned that way!
This is a great hub, I am a work at home mom, filtered through the bad stuff and finally started my own VA company. I know I am legit, now I show other moms how to start there companies. Guru is good, you might also mention Elance they are ver good as well.
Its Angel - Thank you so much for your comments. It is nice to hear success stories.

3TM- I dream of having a nice little home set-up and of course I wish I was a writer who could stay in his robe all day and write little stories, but if that doesn't ever happen there are jobs in construction(that would be my field), in which I can stay home too. One is as an estimator and do rough take-off of plans for general contractors, scheduler, in which you get all the notes from the general and put it on the computer into fancy graphs, and of course as you mentioned, as an appointment setter for new jobs. Good informative hub to keep me dreaming.
