Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Had Low Self-Esteem
Everyone knows that Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer had a very shiny nose, but few realize he also had extremely low self-esteem. It is evident in the song.
Not only did these other reindeer keep Rudolph from joining in any reindeer games, they also bullied him, by calling him names. Most likely he was physically assaulted as well. And there is no mention, in the song, of Santa stepping in and stopping the bullying. He must have known.
It must have been hell for Rudolph up there in the North Pole, enduring all the bitter ostracism and bullying. And he could not even get any support at home, because of ignorant reindeer parents who shunned him because they felt he was a freak. The reindeer father actually became angry at Rudolph for having been born with such an abnormal nose, as if Rudolph had any control over his predicament.
At some point Rudolph probably wanted to commit suicide or become a homicidal maniac, but he suffered in silence, as most kids who are bullied do. That was until one foggy Christmas Eve when Santa came to say, "Rudolph with your nose so bright won't you guide my sleigh tonight?" Rudolph literally jumped at the chance to serve this man who had allowed him to be bullied. And those other eight nasty rotten reindeer, all of a sudden, just loved Rudolph. Why? Because he could be used to suit their purpose. If they loved him so much, why didn't they just apologize for their horrible treatment of him in the past? There is not one mention of an apology in the song, yet Rudolph goes right on and pulls Santa's sleigh, and gets these menaces through the worst Christmas storm ever.
What in the world was wrong with Rudolph that caused him to be such a doormat.? Why did he not stand up for himself? Why did he find it appropriate to seek the favor of a community that showed such disrespect and hate toward him? Low self-esteem! Yes, Rudolph had low self-esteem. He never stood up for himself, and, slavishly, sought the acceptance of the very people who tormented him. If Rudolph had had any feeling of self-worth when Santa asked,"Won't you guide my sleigh tonight...?"
Rudolph would have promptly responded, "Hell no! Take your eight tiny despicable reindeer and stick them up your a$$!"
