If you search the word fishing you get Google coming back at you with 142 million results.  Now if you searched fishing for walleye in deep water you would get 102 000 results coming at you from Google.

I think with results like that it is quite easy to see how it would be easier to rank for the phrase as compared to the single word.

Another reason a phrase is better for sales is that once someone is actually using phrases as compared to single words they are getting much closer to buying.  By being specific they are looking for something instead of just browsing.

You know people are much closer to buying when they are searching say Hummingbird 2019 ocean fish finder as opposed to just searching fish finder
