Now some of you signed up for today dot com blog through my hub and I thank you one and all. Remember I promised to get on your case if you didn't post regularly? Well I have revised my promise - because some of you haven't posted AT ALL!
Maybe its me I had the some problem when I encouraged people to sign up for Constant Content: lots of you signed up, very few of you have sold anything, predominantly because you haven't written anything there!
Maybe its me: maybe my sales copy is missing the important bit: signing up is the START not the END
Lets talk about signing up for stuff. Hey I'm as guilty as anyone for signing up, having a look and moving on! Sometimes the site just doesn't work for me, maybe I just don't find that I get the results from it. I certainly don't advocate trying to do everything on the Internet that way lies madness and sleep depredation.
I made the assumption that most people at hubpages would have done some blogging first, like me, but I think I was wrong because from the questions I get I think a lot of people haven't blogged before and blogging is different from hubbing!
So this is a hub about getting the best out of a regular blogging gig: and how to develop a blogging habit.
Why Am I Blogging?
This is the first question you should ask: preferably before you sign up! If you are not sure why you are blogging your blog will go the way of my first one. That was basically a personal diary, and as a way to stay in contact with people back home. It failed on both accounts: I'm not very good at writing personal diaries and no one at home ever left a comment so I felt like I was talking to myself.
Here are some possible answers to the question of WHY:
- create short posts which promote my hubs and other sites to a new audience and lets Google know that another site thinks my hub is worth looking at (that's a backlink);
- a place to write short items which I may not know enough about/care enough to make a full-blown hub but I want to write a few words on;
- write short topical pieces that are in the news and I want to capture the public's interest in (trends blogging);
- have a blog for all those sites such as mybloglog which don't allow me to submit my hubs because they only allow blogs: a perfectly legit way around this restriction:
- if you are commenting and interacting with other bloggers sometimes its good to be able to have a link on your comment back to another blog rather than a hub
Now this is the tricky bit: commit to blogging, regularly, preferably daily, for at least 30 days. Only then will you be able to assess whether your new blog is working for you

How To Keep On Blogging
Now the good news is that you are not stuck with your initial idea of WHY you are blogging, your blog may evolve over time.
The most hilarious example of this I know of is Make Money online by Grizz - this started as an Adsense money maker - designed for people take one look at the "boring blogger blog" think yuk and exit via the ad. It turned out though he wrote too well and he got a lot of subscribers and it became a social blog - check out the number of comments!
That's the exception though - in general though its useful to have some sort of plan of
How Not To Run Out of Ideas
So you've committed to writing a daily blog for 30 days, what's next -the topics of each post probably. Many people come unstuck after 3 or 4 posts - they have done the obvious "Hello world" posts - not what?
Well this is my method - it works for me but I didn' t invent it, its copied from my local newspaper! I have a pattern of posts - notice how your local newspaper always has a travel section on Saturday and features IT and computers on Tuesday? Why - well its easier to run a newspaper that way and your readers know to buy the paper on Saturday for the travel supplement. I don't always advertise my format - and I don't always stick to it but so far if you want to learn about Travel Gear check on Thursday's and unusual hotels check on Friday's. Why did I choose those days - because as the week goes on I get more pressed for finding time to post so knowing the topic in advance helps a lot.
Your mileage will obviously vary - but having a plan definitly makes it easier for inspiration to strike!

How to Develop the Habit of Blogging
Well they say, all over the Internet anyway, that it takes 21 days to create a new habit. My experience is that I can stop eating chocolate for months and still take it up again in an instant, so I am not convinced.
What I do know, that just like anywhere it takes at least a month or so to start getting any traction at a new site. So the most important thing to do is not despair if you don't get any visitors initially, forget about it initially just get some content up so that someone will actually want to read when they arrive!
So just like going on a diet or a to the gym: don't give up before you have given yourself a chance! So for any blogging site - but particularly today dot com with their guaranteed payment system - commit to blogging daily or nearly so for the first month before you evaluate your results and decide to continue on or not.
Write in Advance
Real life can ruin a blogger's good intention. You have to go on vacation, your child gets sick, you get busy, especially at this time of year. Problogger wrote an excellent post on why you should write your posts before you need them I am trying to do with sites that I am a paid blogger on so that one day a week I will write the week's posts. It works better for not very topical subjects obviously.
At today dot com I am a little wary of scheduling posts more than a day or 2 in advance because they may come by and approve and lock the posts- meaning I would lose the option of rescheduling. Instead I will write the post and save them as a draft - then I just need to pop in and publish them NOW or change the date stamp to when I want them published.
Summary of How to Start a Successful Blog
Focus on what you are trying to achieve for your blog: if you aim is to get backlinks it doesn't really matter whether you are on the "hot list" of top number of visited blogs, you still have the backlinks.
Don't compare yourself too much to others. In can be very depressing for us mere mortals. I'm not a natural blogger, I am much better at articles and hubs. Some people are are very good natural bloggers who seem to always have interesting material and can move give it that personal twist and relevant to others. Check out what pgrundy is doing with her I Hate My Job Blog. I also read writer's blogs and think gosh - I could never write as well and as persuasively as that - well the reality is - I don't. I am however achieving MY aims and goals - and that's the important thing - for me!
Also it doesn't have to forever. I did a blog for a while for a contest: I haven't posted on it since June: it still makes me money and gets traffic. If you can get the blog off and running in the first month, you may very well not have to post on it forever, or at least not daily to continue to reap the benefits.
So in order to start a successful blog in three easy steps:
- define what "sucess" is for your blog;
- commit to the blog for a miminum of 30 days;
- evaluate after 30 days - decide whether to stop, change your posting rate whatever.
Its not very profund when you write it down like that; almost everyone can do it - but most won't! The statistics speak for themselves. I have added everyone who has posted at least one post to my blogroll on my today blogs - to date - so if you are not there - that's because you haven't posted yet!

Well I haven't actually done it - yet! But I have been blogging 3 times a week for 2 differnet blogs that I a paid author at for the last 4 months - the more you write the quicker you get for sure!

I couldn't agree with you more about writing in advance, I need to do that more myself, but when it happens I never regret it.
Question, 30 days? Is this more of a psychological thing to develop a habit? Or is this something you are suggesting so as to get traffic, and see what happens? My only concern here would search engine love patterns I've observed... Thoughts?
30 days - simply because the today dot com site guarantees a set rate per post for the first 30 days of a new blog :-) I tried to find some evidence that doing something new for 30 days or 21 days (another frequently quoted number) but I couldn't :-) I know I can go to the gym for 90 days - but I will stop given 1/2 an excuse LOL!
Also search engines do love patterns and frequent posting definitly gets them to notice - but the definition of frequent there is much more than just once a day!
I fine definitly with hubpages and possibly with today.com its easier to get the search engines because the search engines trust the site already - I have had google traffic to some of my today posts - but they were the ones on topical topics - no surprise there.
Oh and it wasn't my childhood I was talking about - I started my first blog about 2 years ago!
Ii agree Lissie - people may be listening and commenting on HubPages, but start a blog on Blogger.com or Wordpress.com and see how many visitors you get! My two Blogger blogs were a complete waste of time - infact I'm going to transfer my posts from them into my Today dot com blogs instead, where at least I'll get paid for a month. Interesting that a single post from my Blogger blogs will make two or three posts at Today dot com - no wonder I was running out of material!
(Still wishing I had signed up under a Hubber rather than finding Today.com via Google, but I digress.)
CONFESSION: After applying, it was about 3 weeks before my first post. This was because I did not get a note saying my blog had been accepted -- plus I'd forgotten I'd signed up in the first place!
The blog would still be sitting there, pristine and bare, if a former Hubber had not asked me to give it a try. I went in to sign up, and found out I was already a member and my (totally forgotten) blog had been approved!
THE MORAL OF THIS CONFESSION IS: If you've only just applied, and are not sure if you've been approved yet, you might want to wander over to Today and check on your status.
@Marisa just check if your posts are indexed in google - if they are you will have to re-write them to pass copyscape - I assume today wants unique content: to check if pages on your are indexed google site:myoldblog.com
@Marian - that's a good point - as the referrer I can see the today blog but I don't know who it belongs to otherwise I could be more proactive on thhat one!

Until the pages get de-indexed. I don't know how long that takes - but I would like to know so if you want to try the experiment do please report back! Make sure the pages are indexed to start off with. Delete the posts - or unpublish them, and see how long it takes for them not to be found by the site:myblog.com search. My feel is that it could take a few weeks/months
OK I'm going to give it a try - it's all an experiment after all, isn't it! I'll let you know what happens.
How galling, when there are those of us who know how to really make good use of an opportunity like this but are denied because the owners of the opportunity don't like the country we live in. Then there are those who have it on a plate and either don't know what to do with it, or worse simply can't be bothered!

Well, sorry to say, I missed yesterday. Doh!
Seriously, I feel terrible about it. I remembered it in bed, just as I was about to fall asleep, and I almost got up and wrote a 100 word post but the next thing I knew I was out. I worked a long physical day yesterday, which is good for me, but I was so tired by the time I sat down I was out like a light. It looks like Thursdays are going to be like that for me now--a free aerobic and weight-lifting workout (well, actually a PAID workout, even better!)
Even though I blew the $30 and (sorry!) your $5, I'm not giving up though. What I'd like to do is create links between my hubs here and the blog, and then work at promoting it on related sites and see how far I get, but so far I've only managed to slap up the daily posts. (Minus one.)
I'm getting tired of Elance. My best regular client there just sold the blog I write for him, right after giving me a hefty raise, and the next day all of his writers, including me, got a nastygram from the new owners saying that our old boss was losing $1000 a month on the blog, and if we thought we were going to be paid as he paid us or have jobs at all, we'd better think again, and don't call them, they'll call us...maybe. I thought, geez--who crapped in YOUR cornflakes?
But that's a recurring theme--flighty clients, vanishing projects, projects posted (at Elance) for $1.50 per 400 words (are they serious?), and I'm thinking, maybe I'm directing my attention the wrong way. Maybe I should be learning more about the mechanics of promoting my own stuff, distasteful as that is to me.
I'd love to have more control, even if it meant a big investment of time at the start-up. I really appreciate you sharing all your experiences and the info and the sites. It's extremely helpful. Thanks!
No, no Pam you didn't blow it! YOU lost yourself a dollar but I will still get a referral so long as you post 10 posts inside 3 months - I not at all worried about you managing that LOL I never did E-Lance - that place sent me off cleaning that was a PAID work out too - for a lot more money!
Are you at constant-content - people do make decent money there - to start with you have write on spec, but people do pick up on-going private clients there I know. And you have total control over what rights you sell too.
Long term though writing is great and its great for quick money but the long-term income is to get your own sites making you money. I know where you are coming from though - I had huge issues around marketing my own stuff - I wrote about i on my 100sites recently.
I've never tried constant-content. Maybe I'll try that for awhile and see if it goes any better. Or do both. I'm just weary of writing about foot powder with five keywords chose by the client and then spun five or six ways. For 30 bucks or whatever. Yuck.
Still, even writing about foot powder beats getting yelled at every two minutes at the bank! Glad I didn't blow the whole Today thing! I'm enjoying it. Thanks!

You should come and pat me on the shoulder. I've only missed one day so far. That's the day I worked seventeen hours non-stop. I was working on the post and fell asleep. Mrs Yeung ordered retreat and who dared to say no.

I actually read a couple of excellent Chinese blogs in Hong Kong. The bloggers schedule twice weekly updates, as in magazines. That's not a bad idea, as it gives them a reasonable dead-line, as well as leaving them more time to work on the quality of the blogs.
Everyone - be wary of duplicate content. You can't just post a long copy from a hub on today and get paid. In fact Google won't even index you (which is why today won't pay you). Instead use the wonderful English language to say something similar a different way - and remember on Today you write as little as 250 odd words and still get indexed. Here's an example: I previously wrote this piece on the Atacama Desert for a Luxury Travel blog http://blog.luxuryproperty.com/atacama-chile/ and then reused the information to promote the post and add a nice post to http://travelover30s.today.com/2008/11/08/james-bo
Both posts are indexed and I have been getting google traffic to today blog
@ Benson - sorry - we cross-posted. You know that Google explicitly does not count content translated from another language as duplicate? I think you have a great opportunity there! What I plan - but really havent done to date is to do some short 100 word posts just for the cash and then longer posts I definitley want to get into Google - its nice for readers to get a mixture of length posts too
You have some great tips. I usually write a good amount of articles first, before I actually set up a blog. This gives me a few weeks of leeway before I have to start writing again, where I can tweak the blog. It can also help you decide whether or not the blog is a good fit. If you can't come up with ten posts or you don't have fun doing it, then the blog might not be for you. Then I will pick a day and write several articles that I will post throughout the week. I think Marisa Wrights advice about starting with Wordpress/Blogger is a good idea too. This is a free easy way to get a start in the blogging world.
brad that's good advice - I usually jump in and think afterwards - its a personality thing LOL Note the today is free too - and pays you if you play with their farily reasonable rules. And it does seem easier to get traffic today blog than a blogger
I know very little about blogging. if I do 2 posts in a day does it count as only 1?
HI SirDent - if you mean @ Today - yes they only pay on a maximum of 1 post per day per blog plus whatever you get for visitors to your blog: $2 for ever 1000 visitors. You could write a post per a hubpage: don't copy the hubpage just write an overview of the hug and link to the hub: it will push the Hub up the search engine results have the link and you may get more traffic

Sometimes if you are on a roll I will write posts in advance and either leave them as draft or schedule them to post tomorrow by changing the post date !

Have you introduced yourself on the forums at today -that's got me a bit of traffic, you can add your blog to your signature as well.
My personal experience says that working on a new blog everyday is necessary. Either we can work on it by posting new content or by promoting it. But something needs to be done. Then after 2-3 months things start getting in line. Then accordingly you can change your strategy.
I agree with you aanae - my problem is going to be the next month when I am going to be away for 2 weeks!
Yes. Gap of 2 weeks is much. May be you can tell anyone else to do your work. Or you can write some posts in advance and ask someone to post them on your blog. Gap is so much of a problem because whatever traffic you wud have gained in the past months or weeks on the new blog, it starts to diminish and the effort goes in vain. So do try to assign someone else. :)
Oh I will just schedule the posts to publish while I'm away - its a handy feature of WordPress the schedule button!
I find it quite hard to keep up with all the blogs I write, but I do try harder than others who like you said sign up for something and do nothing, these people should be hung, drawn and quartered!!!.
Planning ahead does work wonders though, 30 minute blog 3 times a week on post title brainstorm sessions is all I need to come up with new posts, that and a few google searches.
I've been blogging for 2 years now and I have 2 blogs. I must admit that sometimes, I'll get that writer's block and have no idea what to write. One lesson I've learnt is that, never to write for the sake of writing. This is to prevent you from writing crappy article. Also, your articles need to be useful to others. No point ranting about the sky being purple when nobody else cares about it (except you).
And yeah, writing in advance DOES help. You just don't want to push yourself to write at the wrong time. LOL.
Thanks for visiting guys - yes I get in the groove with a blog topic and can write 3 or 4 posts in a row with my niche blogs. Also I use the stats to tell me what people are finding me by with search - and write more on that. Or I look at which of my hubs are getting a whole of search traffic and blog on that!

Its a big depends on that one SirDent - Today has posted a clarifification here (you need to be registered for the forum) http://today.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1802 the important bits is "that we always reconsider posts for inclusiion" and "we are finding reviewing posts more an art than a science"
And I think this sentence is the key "repeatedly link to another site where you earn money for the same or similar content to invite the reader to read the rest of an article at the other site; or where you link to articles at the same site repeatedly across a number of your posts"
Today is evolving as all sites do: and I although I often link to a hub I never say "read the rest of this article here" - that's a lousy keyword to link on anyway! I just link on say "Australia movie" if the blog is about Darwin and the link is about the Australia movie. That said I still have most of my posts not yet reviewed so I guess it will be clearer in the next day or so as its the end of the month
I have registered for the forums. I always thought blogs were about promoting oneself. I am having trouble navigating and editing there also.
I consider both my blogs at today to be totally self-promotional: they have gone in different directions australia.today.com is more about search traffic and I following the news on that one. There are often links to my hubs but not always, I look at the stats to see what searches people are using to find me and then sometimes write a post just on that search.
my trave30plus.today.com blog is a bit more coherant and Iam trying to get regular readers for that one. I promote hubpages and other sites I write about but also throw in the odd post which is just about content - usually because someone asked in the comments.
Because you are writing about http://homeremodeling.today.com/ renovation I would definitly put some pictures up - people love before/after shots! Or some silly pics: there are some REALLY silly vanities around at the moment LOL
I will try. My old computer is so slow it take forever for the site to load. The only pics I have are of me in a kitchen I installed. I do have the one commode with the computer, phone, reclining back, etc. . .
I just checked my hub account. One of my hubs has 666 views. And they all thought Obama was the antichrist.

I signed up through you and have been posting. Not getting a lot of traffic, but getting some. Anyways, they tend to be shorter - as you mentioned. And more of "my thoughts" than of anything else. They do a good job promoting other blogs I write for. That is why I did it in the first place. Nice hub.
I have one post that is a problem post. Actually it is a blank post and I have no idea how it got there. Anyway, I am told to fix it or delete it. I can't find the delete button for it.
@nwunderlich - thanks - it takes a while to build traffic if you are diong a social type blog - give it a least a month
@SirD - go to "manage by blog" "posts you should see every post with a view/edit/delete option - choose the right post! (actually the ones that have been approved and paid will probably just have view option)

a couple of friends have clipped on my referral links at today dot come but they still haven't been approved after 6 weeks. Do you know why?
If they haven't got the email - I suspect the email has gone into an over-zealous spam filter tell them to just try going to http://www.today.com/login and trying to login - their blog is probably there. If that doesn't work get them to email support and ask if there is a problem it should only take a few days at most to be approved
