Writing Coherently!
Pith and Brevity Will Keep Your Reader From Snoring!
While I do not claim to be an expert on grammar, and could be browbeaten by many editors, I do read books and others blogs which are grammatically correct. I find that more than a few are incoherent babble. This is partly - no completely a direct result of the government operated schools our children attend. No child left behind leaves the intelligent children, no matter the race, stuck in a world of drivel they have already learned. That is a subject for another Hub.
This Hub is dedicated to coherency of literature published by you. If you want me (or any other Great American) to read your Hubs they should fit this criteria:
1. Coherent
2. No Babble, read your words OUT LOUD to yourself before clicking publish. That is a plea for sanity's sake!
3. Pithy (Look it up at Dictionary.com)
4. Brevity (Dictionary.com)
5. Remove words that should not be in a sentence!
That was a terrible sentence, the real number 5 follows and reads as a correct sentence should.
5. Omit needless words. Understand how that works? If your entire blog is filled with needless words you will lose the reader. This simple application took the sentence from 9 words to 3, yet the meaning is not lost.
6. Make certain the subjects and verbs of a sentence agree, this is OUT LOUD reading and comprehension.
7. Learn to punctuate and spell correctly! Use Microsoft Word to create your Hub, then copy and paste it to the Hub Pages site. "Word" will help you immensely with spelling, punctuation and grammar.
These are a few tips that I look for when reading anything. Again I stress, I am not an editor or grammar professor by any means, this only an opinion and what I have learned through reading comprehensive literature.
Paul Edmondson posted a Hub exploring this subject. This inspired me to respectfully add a few things I think are relevant to the same subject.
I have included a link to the most helpful book on this subject, it is pithy and brief. The Elements of Style is a short book written by William Strunk, reading this short book will improve your skill at relating information to others via the written word.
If you know me personally you are probably thinking, His wife wrote that, he's too stupid to write something so concise. You are wrong! If you think that is the case, you will be beaten bloody with a thesaurus!
