Booming Population Growth

From 1999 – 2009, Fishers, Indiana has experienced disproportionate growth of business and residential populations. This increase has amounted to 600% population growth. Because of a high percentage of migration to Fishers from outside Indiana or from outside the USA, this city has been named the Number 11 Best Place to Move for work in America by Forbes.com. Money Magazine designated it the 10th Best Place to Live. In addition, it has earned the designation as a CLEAN Community from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. This city is striking a balance between business success and good stewardship of the earth.

Fishers abuts the northeastern tip of Indianapolis, 17 miles from city center. It is the most quickly growing town in the State of Indiana, doubling its population from 2000 - 2008. One factor that encourages this growth is the success of the Meridian Corporate Corridor along US 31.

Meridian Corporate Corridor 2009 - 2012

The MCC stands as a gateway to Northern Indianapolis in Marion County from Hamilton County and the suburbs of Fishers,Carmel, and Westfield, Indiana.

MCC runs along US Highway 31, entending 20 miles from north to south through the center of Indianapolis. A 12-mile stretch of US 31 is ready for reconstruction to upgrade it to an interstate-quality highway in 2011-2012. Hamilton County is the only suburban county of Central Indiana that is served by I-465, the Meridian Corporate Corridor, and US 31; and infrastructure improvements will facilitate easier transporation and growth.

An expected 28,000+ workers are projected to be supported by MCC businesses after completion of reconstruction. Meanwhile, new businesses will be able to start up as contruction advances. In addition, ARRA and local Stimulus projects include I-465, I-70, and I-74 highway improvements; Fort Harrison State Park improvements; water system septic tank elimination; and at least 3 historical and artistic projects.

American City Business Journals issued a "Quality of Life Report" that named Hamilton County as Number Eight (8) on the list of all American Counties in Top Quality of Life afforded its residents and workers. This is another advantage that draws new population numbers and businesses to the suburb of Fishers.

Early Suburb Developments

United States railroads brought new settlers to the Midwest and Indiana, especially in Central Indiana and north of what is now Indianapolis.

FIshers, IN started out as Fishers Switch because of its railroading connections. A railroad switch is a setup in which a train's direction can be changed from one fork of a narrow crossroads affair to another. The train could switch tracks. After Fishers began to expand, its name was changed to Fishers, Indiana.

In the same locale are other similar towns, including Carmel and Westfield. Another place is called Conner Prairie (see city map, above). This village is a reconstructed historical settlement made up of historic buildings moved to the site in order to preserve the culture of 19th Century Central Indiana.

Conner Prairie, Indiana

Conner Prairie is in the suburb of Noblesville, also near Fishers IN. William Conner constructed a profitable trading post to do business with the Delaware Nation in "Indian Terrorist" round Central Indiana. He married a Delaware woman and together they had 6 children. In 1818, the Delaware moved west of the Mississippi River and Mrs. Conner and the children moved with them. Mr. Conner equipped his trading post to service the new settlers coming from the East and was successful then as well.

William Conner married one of the women settlers and had 7 additional children with her. He built a large brick house for his family, which also served as the Post Office and the local courtroom. The family later moved to Noblesville, which Conner had also founded very close by. In 1933, Eli Lilly, of the present local pharmaceutical giant, began to restore the Conner brick house and to gather buildings to reconstruct Conner Prairie. The village was presented as a gift to Earlham College in 1964 and the settlement operates as a restored historical village, complete with period workplaces, furnisings, guides, and reenactors.

In 2009, Conner celebrated the 150th Anniversary of Air Mail.
