Will I Date a Lesbian?

When the Hubmob topic turned to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues, I couldn’t help but recall my first time encounter with a lesbian.

This is a true story.

During my younger years, I confessed that I was in the pursuit of finding the right person to walk down the aisle with and to love and cherish until we both turn old and gray. Somehow, situations in funny and strange ways would come up. Like when I was waiting in an eye doctor’s clinic, a father (who was with her daughter) suddenly talked to me. In that short conversation, he had already offered me his nephew who was single. He was matchmaking me?! I found myself grinning widely. This was a stranger and here he was offering me his nephew. He was serious. In fact, his nephew did show up in our preschool but unfortunately there were no sparks.

And of course being the only girl in the family I was expected to marry someday. So I no longer found it unusual when I was matched, received invitations, got text messages asking if we could be friends, go on a blind date and so on.

One day, my girl cousin was animatedly telling me about a cruise for singles that was offered in itzamatch.com. She said that there was a flyer attached to her credit card bill and she wanted to find out what it was all about. Hmmm, it sounded fun – cruise for singles! Anyhow, she informed me a few hours after that she had already signed up for itzamatch.com. “Why don’t you sign up too? Maybe if you would be interested then we can go together?”

I logged in to itzamatch.com and just filled up my name and the required personal information. I also read about the cruise but I think it was expensive or something and we ended up not going. There were one or two girls who befriended me in the beginning and one even asked for my number. She had mentioned that she was into selling properties and since our preschool was on the look out for rented places, I gave her my number.

A few weeks later, I got a text message from someone. This perosn got my number from the girl who befriended me at itzamatch. His name was Charles and he asked if it was okay if we could be friends. As I said, since I was used to receiving text messages already, I just replied politely.

Charles seemed okay and then he asked if he could meet me personally. Since I am basically a cautious person and I am not into meeting complete strangers on a blind date (unless referred by a friend who knows them personally), I decided to tell him that I was singing in the music ministry and if he wanted he could join the prayer gathering and he could come up and say hello.

Charles said yes.

The music ministry group was preparing on the backstage when one of our sisters in the community approached me and said someone was looking for me. I assume it was Charles. So I went out and there he was.

But Charles was not a he. Charles was a she!

I was too shocked to say anything much. But I recalled I was able to say hello and glad she could come and attend our prayer gathering. And I told her to please find a seat and to enjoy the talk as well as the singing. “Okay, thanks.” She said.

That was it.

Charles was a lesbian. It was my very first encounter with a lesbian who wanted to date me. She sent me a text message after saying how nice a person I was and how she enjoyed the prayer gathering. She also asked if we could meet up somewhere. So I told her I was so sorry for the misunderstanding and thanked her for making the effort to show up. And how I really thought she was a guy. And I hope she understood that I had to decline.

That incident made me really wonder. So I began to recall and remembered itzamatch.com. So I visited their website and lo and behold, in the profile page, I had failed to see and answer this question.

I am a woman looking for a …. The default answer was woman!

I was laughing at myself so hard. No wonder I was receiving email and messages from the women.

Just a friendly reminder: To avoid future mix ups, be sure to fill up the personal information completely, including what you are looking for!

LOL, next time, do some talking other than texting. I know how you must of felt when you found out that Charles was a girl?! I remember telling the drummer guy who was about to enter the ladies restroom at church that the boys restroom was that way to save himself from embarassment. He turned around and angerily told me, "I'M A GIRL!!!"

I turned stone cold and told the minister about it. They were just as shocked as I was too!?

Hi dori, I confess I am very much naive when it comes to dating esp. coming from a very conservative family. I'm glad too that turned out okay. :-)

Hi mayhmong, I will remember that next time someone wants to date me. LOL

Hi Kate, do you know, it's also a Chinese tradition. LOL

Hi VioletSun, hahahaha I love you for being proud to be gay! It is wonderful to connect with you. Dayzeebee is laughing so hard at both of us. Can you hear her laughter? :-)

Ha, ha, ha, ha....Michelle, this was funny.

When I was exploring one dating page, I refused circa 400 guys, so they started to connect me with women..After that, I finally closed my profile. Felt really uncomftable...with the deepest respect to the choices of others, it is not mine (at least not in this life, he, he).

Poor Charles... Maybe she will also learn the lesson to use female name...

Great Hub, as always.

So glad for emails telling us when our favorites post a new hub. I'm still smiling after reading this one! I can only imagine your surprise finding out Charles was a woman. When I married and first moved to the big "city" from a very small, remote country town, I was approached and asked out by a lesbian. I went home and told my husband I wanted to move back to the country! With him, of course! We're still here, in the city, 31 years later. Thanks for a very entertaining hub.

Delightful story, Michelle, and a great example of exercising kindness while being honest.

I just went out to itzamatch.com to see how they gather personal info, and I can see how I could have made that mistake, too! I wonder if Charles wasn't limiting her own possibilities by using that name. If a profile has a man's name, yet also says it's a woman looking for women, potential dates just might think there's a fake or troll on board and not venture even a "hello". Poor Charles. I surely hope her parents didn't really name her that. :)

Hi Sally, it's wonderful to hear from you once again. I don't know if she was named like that. I know of a lesbian who deliberately changed her name because it was her preference. Great hub, Michelle ... a delicate and potentially embarrassing situation you got yourself into, and then handled it so well. And, now you have narrated it in such an amusing manner!

Somehow, one doesn't think any less of a woman who might have such a tendency. After all I appreciate the beauty in a pretty woman. How can one blame someone else, of whichever gender, to also appreciate and like what I do.

But strangely enough, I - and I think other straight men - can never fathom how guys get attracted to each other! Sure we might keep a straight face and even have a pleasant conversation in a social setting, but I'd never be able to be friendly to a gay man. I'd mistrust him and think him a bit weird.

So.. I take it the answer to your title question is "No!" LOL. Funny story and you really handled the situation well. So calm and cool -- go ahead and have a seat and enjoy the music, CHARLES! OMG, I would have died!

I did wonder when you mentioned the online dating site if it was specifically for gays. But I'm assuming that if it was, you would have noticed right off and not filled in your profile!

The other day I got what looked to be a fabulous offer in my inbox. It was from a cruise company. The price was right (they are giving cruises away these days) and I clicked to read more. Turned out to be a gay singles cruise! Not sure where they got my email address. Maybe if I send it to you you can forward it to Charles:-)!!!

Hi Mighty Mom, when Charles left my side, I remember running to my friends who were seated already and said, "Charles is a girl! Charles is a girl! What have I done?" I was too shocked I guess. LOL Itzamatch.com was not a dating site for gays. That I am sure. Haha When I clicked the "looking for a man" thing, soon I had emails from the men. But it has been a long time I've visited that site. As for charles, I no longer know where she is. I don't think she still would want to talk to me either. :-) I wish her all the best though and hope she finds her love.

I really enjoyed your story about the misunderstanding. There was a funny episode of Sex and the City where Miranda's coworker matched her with a lesbian because he thought she was one since she did not have a boyfriend. She told the co-worker no she was single, and then had to break the news to the lady that there was a misunderstanding. This took place during a company baseball game, so both of them decided to go ahead and play anyway. Her supervisor thought they were a couple, so Miranda brought her new friend to a dinner party just to try and get promoted at work. That was a funny episode about misunderstandings. I accidenally have put I was a man on some websites that are just blogs.
