It is a well known fact that there is a huge debate going on regarding who are better drivers. Men or women.
I just had an issue with my mother in-law. You see, she had a little car trouble or mishap if we can call it, and all the male family members had something to say about female drivers.
"Women this, they drive like that, they bla, bla, bla...
My ex use to work at a short term insurance house and she always said that their figures show that women has a better track record compared to men. Well, I thought that I'm going to investigate this myth, add a little humor to it, and see what comes from it.
I'm still of the opinion that we are better drivers than women, but the statistics tell another tale. I must add that these figures are to car related accidents and in no way portray the fact that women are better drivers.

It's not that easy to find axact and up to date stats globally. The best up to date figures were from the US, 2007, and I thought I'll use that as the majority of hubbers are Amarican.
The death toll on American roads estimates to 40 000 annually. These are drivers, passengers and pedestrians added together. The cost related runs into millions of dolars, estimated a staggering $720 000.00.
Motor vehicle accidents is the leading cause of death for Americans aged between 3 an 33 since 2002.
According to the US government, the size of your car play a role in your safety. Meaning, the larger your car is, the less risk of driver fatality, thus, the smaller your car is the chances are greater that your risk is to a fatal car crash. Does that make sence....
They also reckon that SUV's and pik-up's have a greater risk in fatal accidents that sedan cars with the same approxomate weight. This is even more weirder, I think.
Another lower risk factor is newer or modern vehicles with ESC(electronic stability control).

51% of all fatal accidents happen over week-ends.
1.35 Male deaths occur, compared to .77 female drivers over a 100 million miles driven.
Males are 77% more likely to die in car accidents than women.
Elderly women are 60% more prone to a fatal accident than a 16year old boy.
Ederly women are 5 times more likely to die on the road, even as passengers.
16 to 23 year old males are 4 times more likely to die compared to more mature drivers.
40 and 50 year olds have the least likely to die in a car accident.
Infants and children up to 4 years are the least likely to die in fatal accidents.
Elevated risks for male drivers are speeding and drinking and driving.
Motorcycle drivers are 32% more prone to death than passenger car passengers or drivers.
Male fataities are much higher than female's. However, men do about 60-65% more driving than women. Women tend to do shorter trips and they have a gretaer number of minor accidents.
Men are still 70% more likely to be in a serious or fatal accident.

And I know I'm in trouble here...
Well rats, I just passed the 40-50 women's category. Rats. My ins agent says women, esp younger, get into more fender-benders and males that age get into fewer accidents overall, but the ones they do have are worse. That said, I've been in more accidents in the last 4 years, than any in my life. 1 and only ever 1 was my fault, blind corner, truck had no brake lights..yeah yeah.. So I've filled my lifetime quota and I'm done.. However, only 1 speeding ticket, when I was 16!
The women around here are equally aggressive drivers as men and are usually on their cells at that time.

Men may have more serious accidents, but when I see stupid things happening on the road....the majority of the time it is a woman or and old person!
My girlfriend getts so mad at me when I point out all the female mistakes, but she can't argue back when its true!

Now you know we are better drivers, how many of us give the finger or start screaming at someone on the highways and byways? However I do have to say both male and female can exceed the speed. lololo :)

Umm... As much as I hate to admit it, when I was 16 I got my Ford Mustang stuck on some railroad tracks! At least it was crossway. I can see another hub in the making- Why 16 year old girls shouldn't drive! LOL

There's no controversy here, MaD. Women are better hands down.
My husband has more tickets and accidents on his record than I do, and I'm the one who thinks a speed limit is only a suggestion. I have NEVER been in an accident that was my fault or avoidable on my part. I'm pretty good at spotting a cop (even the unmarked ones) and maeuvering so that if he does pick me up on radar, another car around me gets pinned for it. I know it's not nice, but it keeps my insurance rates down.
However, there was that one time in Driver's Ed when I broke the rear wheel axel.......

He, he, he....There is everywhere in the world more men on the road, then women. Because of this ratio, and crowded roads, I do not drive. Just in case.
Anyhow, every man is very convinced that is better driver then woman, so I expect that man who drives me to prove that. In case you hear me screaming "stop now" while trying to escape from running vehicle, you can know that guy did not pass the test ...what happened more then once.
If it is up to me, more then 90% of drivers would not be allowed to drive, because of the following reasons: alcohol, drugs, medicines, nervousness,panicking, using cell phone while driving, lack of concentration, aggressiveness towards the other drivers, lack of tolerance towards the other drivers, speeding when this is not appropriate to do, hating other drivers etc.etc.

I don't drive but it would seem now I am getting older I may still die on the roads, god forbid lol
I think it really just comes down to the individual driver. I've seen excellent male drivers and I've seen excellent female drivers. I've also seen horrible male drivers and horrible female drivers. I would never make the assumption that someone is a good or bad driver based on their sex alone.
i believe i'll have to go with mr. ferriera on this. guys are more likely to drive wasted and do boneheaded things. when i think back on my high school days a few years ago, im actually shocked im still alive. but many just plain idiotic fender benders are caused by women. for the most part it all varies from person. i know plenty of girls that are better and safer drivers than most of my dude friends
Tx every one for your input, most of you agree and I have to agree with you, it depends on the individual, but, the conception is that men are better drivers coz we do most of the driving, that true.
But in the history of the auto mobile, the worst ever accidents were caused by men, we think masculinity automatically qualifies us as better drivers, wich is a big myth.
Yes men do more daring and stupid things with cars, i can recall many horrific things I have done too. Justby grace of God that I'm still alive.

As a qualified double decker bus driver (PCV), I am confident in saying that women are far safer drivers than men, (and believe me, I worked with several hundred male drivers!!!). :)

Well, I dont fully agree with it. It depends on how you drive. Even in some cases men are also very bad drivers. So citing some incidents we cant come to any conclusion that women are bad drivers.

As everything there are women that drive badly and man that also drive badly.
I always dream about driving, so when I made 18 I started driving lessons and I passed with flying colors.
The funny thing is that man feel threatened with women (not with the ones driving a very small car) but with women driving a big and better car.
I drive a huge pickup truck with full box, an all terrain (don't know the right name there) , if I go faster and pass and leave behind a mans car he goes wild and starts speeding, why?
I always drove fast, but in places I can!

Ok, at the risk of being scorned at, here goes my opinion:
As a 40 something female driver, with over 20 years of daily driving on a major expressway in the Detroit, MI area, I have seen my share of stupid drivers. I think women drivers are worse than men. In my opinion, it seems their driving skills coincide with their emotions...speed up, slow down, surge the gas pedal, slam the brakes for no reason...it's strange. I admit, I am an agressive driver, but I'm not reckless. I don't run the gammit of driving emotions. I just flip-off the idiot I have to pass on the right because she won't get out of the passing lane. Boy, have I seen some stupid driving maneuvers by women. On the other hand, not all men are good drivers. But they are better than women. Statistics may show one thing, but near-misses show another.

It's all about your individual driving ability. Men, women, ocotpi, whatever, they're still going to crash if they're drunk or just crap. I do hate it when men feel the need to prove their manliness by attempting to reach the speed of sound in their Peugeot 106 though. Just arm wrestle, or something.

Agreed women have less confidence rather than as men have..

yeah, i feel pretty safe too. after checking all those stats I was beginning to get scared even to get into a car.

Now that I think of it, women are more likely to check their hair and make-up while driving. But then it depends on their passengers too. Especially if you are in the same vehicle with teenagers and a 6 year old.
