Halloween is as much for adults as it is for kids. Okay, so we may not get to trick-or-treat, but we do get to dress up. Whether you're going to a Halloween party or staying home to answer the door, you're bound to have more fun if you don a costume.
The question is, what should you be?
Notice I said "What should you be?" We don't say, "What are you wearing for Halloween?" Oh no. When you put on a Halloween costume, what you're really doing is assuming a personality. LIterally becoming someone (or something) other than yourself.
In the spirit of this sprite-filled holiday, I've created my own little guide to some typical approaches to Halloween costuming. See what your choice might reveal* about your inner self. Oh, and don't get scared. It's all in fun!

You Naughty, Naughty Girl!
Ever noticed how many women go the Halloween vamp route? Choose your genre -- French maid, nurse, devilsh devil girl, "wicked" witch, medieval wench -- what they all have in common is uber sex appeal. And every Halloween party I've ever been to has been overrun with them. Leading me to believe there is definitely some deep psychological need being expressed.
Costume Characterized by:
Short skirt. Fishnet stockings or high boots.Sometimes a prop like a whip, stethoscope or feather duster. And lots and lots of cleavage.
What it means:
The sex vixen in you wants to come out and munch on Mr. Goodbar. Good thing grownup Halloween parties are rife with sugar in the form of alcohol. So indulge! Let down those inhibitions, and let loose your inner slut, girlfriend! It's not really you. Oh no/ You're still a good girl. That's your alter ego showing all that leg and cleavage. Wink, wink.
He's Such a Monster!
Halloween is traditionally about ghosts, goblins and things that go bump in the night. It's no wonder, then, that so many revelers choose to play up their ghoulish side.
Costume Characterized by:
Green makeup with neck knobs, gauze-wrapped heads, scars, gristle, missing limbs and other grizzly details.
What it means:
You 're very secure in yourself. You feel quite comfortable hiding beneath an ugly mask and letting people guess who you are. You have a wicked sense of the macabre and have always wanted to be a zombie. Your taste in horror tends toward the classics -- Frankenstein, Dracula, Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Everybody loves you even though they fear you. Wink, wink.
Look at Me, I'm Famous!
Halloween is definitely the night to put yourself in someone else's shoes. And hair. And clothes. And face. Transforming yourself into a famous character -- dead, alive, or fictional -- can be as easy as buying a ready-made packaged costume. Or, you can pull together the pieces and create the look yourself.
Costume Characterized by:
Most people go for a parody, with exaggerated features of the person/character being portrayed.
What it means:
Insecure and antisocial, you have a strong need for everyone to know your name. Since they don't in real life, you choose a famous person to ensure instant recognition. You are shallow and uncreative, a sheep who follows the latest trend/celebrity gossip. This is why, even though you are desperate to stand out as unique, you are likely to see at least two other people wearing the same exact costume at any party you attend.
If It Ain't Ripped, Don't Fix It!
And then there are the people who wear the same costume year in and year out. I guess that makes sense.It's frugal. And practical.
Nobody questions putting the same decorations on our Christmas trees every year.I guess there's nothing wrong with decorating yourself the same way every Halloween. It's just, well, a little boring is all.
Costume Characterized by:
Tradition. People come to expect this costume on this person. Simplicity. Once the costume is assembled, it requires no thought or effort in future years.
What it means:
You think your costume is your "trademark." Other people think you lack imagination. After the second year they are secretly saying about you, "Oh no. Not the priest costume again. Gawd. What a loser." If you are the kind of person who never varies your Halloween costume, you should consider a career that requires you to wear a uniform every day. That kind of clothing monotony will fit you perfectly.
Wow! That's Creative!
We are not all destined for "Project Runway" but we can strut our stuff on the Halloween catwalk with our out-of-the-box costumes. I mean, of course, costumes that are creative, not ones that literally come out of a box.
The kind of costume I'm talking about is unusual and evocative. People will come up and ask you, "What ARE you?" Or they will burst into laughter when they see you. Why? Because you've taken a known concept and turned it on its ear.
Some examples from my own experience: A punk rock (or goth) cheerleader; the Pope, complete with his "Pope-mobile" (made out of cardboard), and "The Dead Kennedys." That last one a blonde female and brunette male couple with nets, shells and starfish stuck to their clothes and hair (obviously emulating John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy).
Costume Characterized by:
Extreme creativity. A novel twist on a familiar theme. Striking originality of idea and execution.
What it means:
You are either brilliant or very, very sick. Possibly both. You probably should audition for "Project Runway."

I looooove this Halloween dress up stuff - always have!
I go scary - the scarier the better. In my neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY, it's the adults that dress up. And we just go about our normal business in the neighborhood as if we are not in costume. You might see a monster in the PO or supermarket - and certainly a bunch of us in a restaurant or coffee shop - or just strolling around.

I have no idea what I will be for Halloween, but I will think of something (I always do and it's usually something over the top and original). Next year, one of my close friends is getting married on Halloween, which I thought was kooky at first but then he explained to me that he would be giving out masks and we'll still be required to dress up as usual.
I really liked how you shot down those that insist on wearing the same $hit every year (they need to go!). There are tons of ideas out there! One of my favorites is the Karate Kid costume--the shower with the curtains--bonus if you get the same one Ralph Macchio had which was red with white polka-dots!

I like "chick magnet". It's a large red magnet that I wear around my neck. All over the magnet are fuzzy yellow baby chicks. . .chick magnet, get it?
I won an award for it a couple years ago, in fact. I usually wear it over my "Sopranos" varsity jacket with blue jeans and my shades. Yup, "Funniest Costume"; that's me.
I might do what I did last year and just put on my orange and black "This IS my Halloween costume". I was hoping my lady friend would give me money to buy a shirt I recently saw. It was Halloween-colored and in nasty green it said "You waqnna see my Halloweenie?"

I would classify myself In the sexy category . However I do get tired of being looked at like a peice of meat ! I think I will wear my stopsign costume for the kiddies while I am distributing High sugar products to the youngsters !

Great hub MM, but I do find one thing odd. Here in the UK a Halloween costume is all about spookiness, e.g. werewolves, Vampyres, Ghosts, Witches etc, yet in the USA it seems any fancy dress costume will do, in other words, even a costume not spooky is acceptable, in spite of the occasion. Can you tell me why this is?? Thanks.

Every year at halloween I let my hair down and change from being a wicked b-witch to a nice pleasant little lady. The transition is over the minute midnight hits though so all beware...buaahahahahah

Misty -- I have no educated answer to your question except that Americans tend to take anything British (or European) and bastardize it to their own way of thinking (or not thinking). Halloween is just a big dressup party. It's like Mardi Gras and a fancy dress ball combined with traditional Halloween scary. Pretty much anything goes.
Here where I live in Calif there is also something called the "Erotic Exotic Ball." I have never been but you can just imagine.
Zsuzsy-- Love the new avatar! You've issued your warning, so we'll be on the lookout for the change and change back. Although to me you'll always have elements of both in equal measure (and that's a good thing! one cannot be too good or too bitchy!)

I am definitely the wife of a pirate!
I reckon I am just boring. I traditionally dress as myself. I always use my birthday suit, it has a few stitches here and there and a few thingies dangling. LOL But I aways get noticed. I do use body paint, a pumpkin on the rear and a monkey wrench on the front. I'm just handy like that.
Great hub MM! The last time I dressed up I went as a Catholic schoolgirl--plaid skirt, white shirt, cardigan, knee socks, and high heels. Bill went as a priest. We got lots of compliments but people kept asking why I wasn't dressed as a Catholic school BOY.

Pam, hello! Your description sounds like that SNL character whose name I can't remember or the comedienne either (although she's in a commercial now with Chevy Chase). She dressed exactly like that and always put her fingers under her armpits to sniff. Very, very funny.

I love the fact that my alter ego gets to show her personality off, actually its not just Halloween when she decides to flaunt herself around... She is unique and fierce and at times has a different personality from others. This was a good hub and I can truly relate to it. Dressing up is the best thing ever invented and to even add a personality that others may be scared or too shy to show off makes it even better. I feel sexy and good about myself when I can step out of my shell and be who i want to be ;)

I do not dress up for Halloween myself, but cool to see all the costumes. By tenth grade the dressing up thing was over for me, but sometimes I wear a Halloween pin or jewelry!

this was fun to read! I don't really do it anymore but back in the day I went as a French Maid a few times and actually caused a car wreck when I bent over to fix the strap on my heels...and WHACK! a guy ran his car right into another guy's car because they were both looking my direction! OOOOPS!
A few other times I went as a Playboy bunny, a Leapord and even Lara Croft Tomb Raider! it was fun!
