Your Halloween Costume Personality
90What your choice of costume reveals about you
Halloween is as much for adults as it is for kids. Okay, so we may not get to trick-or-treat, but we do get to dress up. Whether you're going to a Halloween party or staying home to answer the door, you're bound to have more fun if you don a costume.
The question is, what should you be?
Notice I said "What should you be?" We don't say, "What are you wearing for Halloween?" Oh no. When you put on a Halloween costume, what you're really doing is assuming a personality. LIterally becoming someone (or something) other than yourself.
In the spirit of this sprite-filled holiday, I've created my own little guide to some typical approaches to Halloween costuming. See what your choice might reveal* about your inner self. Oh, and don't get scared. It's all in fun!
*Any description of costumes, costume types and personal motivations, personality traits and basically everything in this Hub is solely the opinion of Mighty Mom. This Hub is not based on any factual research. It is based on personal observation and should not be taken as anything other than a Halloween trick. Or, if you like it, a treat.
You Naughty, Naughty Girl!
Ever noticed how many women go the Halloween vamp route? Choose your genre -- French maid, nurse, devilsh devil girl, "wicked" witch, medieval wench -- what they all have in common is uber sex appeal. And every Halloween party I've ever been to has been overrun with them. Leading me to believe there is definitely some deep psychological need being expressed.
Costume Characterized by:
Short skirt. Fishnet stockings or high boots.Sometimes a prop like a whip, stethoscope or feather duster. And lots and lots of cleavage.
What it means:
The sex vixen in you wants to come out and munch on Mr. Goodbar. Good thing grownup Halloween parties are rife with sugar in the form of alcohol. So indulge! Let down those inhibitions, and let loose your inner slut, girlfriend! It's not really you. Oh no/ You're still a good girl. That's your alter ego showing all that leg and cleavage. Wink, wink.
He's Such a Monster!
Halloween is traditionally about ghosts, goblins and things that go bump in the night. It's no wonder, then, that so many revelers choose to play up their ghoulish side.
Costume Characterized by:
Green makeup with neck knobs, gauze-wrapped heads, scars, gristle, missing limbs and other grizzly details.
What it means:
You 're very secure in yourself. You feel quite comfortable hiding beneath an ugly mask and letting people guess who you are. You have a wicked sense of the macabre and have always wanted to be a zombie. Your taste in horror tends toward the classics -- Frankenstein, Dracula, Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Everybody loves you even though they fear you. Wink, wink.
Look at Me, I'm Famous!
Halloween is definitely the night to put yourself in someone else's shoes. And hair. And clothes. And face. Transforming yourself into a famous character -- dead, alive, or fictional -- can be as easy as buying a ready-made packaged costume. Or, you can pull together the pieces and create the look yourself.
Costume Characterized by:
Most people go for a parody, with exaggerated features of the person/character being portrayed.
What it means:
Insecure and antisocial, you have a strong need for everyone to know your name. Since they don't in real life, you choose a famous person to ensure instant recognition. You are shallow and uncreative, a sheep who follows the latest trend/celebrity gossip. This is why, even though you are desperate to stand out as unique, you are likely to see at least two other people wearing the same exact costume at any party you attend.
If It Ain't Ripped, Don't Fix It!
And then there are the people who wear the same costume year in and year out. I guess that makes sense. It's frugal. And practical.
Nobody questions putting the same decorations on our Christmas trees every year.I guess there's nothing wrong with decorating yourself the same way every Halloween. It's just, well, a little boring is all.
Costume Characterized by:
Tradition. People come to expect this costume on this person. Simplicity. Once the costume is assembled, it requires no thought or effort in future years.
What it means:
You think your costume is your "trademark." Other people think you lack imagination. After the second year they are secretly saying about you, "Oh no. Not the priest costume again. Gawd. What a loser." If you are the kind of person who never varies your Halloween costume, you should consider a career that requires you to wear a uniform every day. That kind of clothing monotony will fit you perfectly.
Wow! That's Creative!
We are not all destined for "Project Runway" but we can strut our stuff on the Halloween catwalk with our out-of-the-box costumes. I mean, of course, costumes that are creative, not ones that literally come out of a box.
The kind of costume I'm talking about is unusual and evocative. People will come up and ask you, "What ARE you?" Or they will burst into laughter when they see you. Why? Because you've taken a known concept and turned it on its ear.
Some examples from my own experience: A punk rock (or goth) cheerleader; the Pope, complete with his "Pope-mobile" (made out of cardboard), and "The Dead Kennedys." That last one a blonde female and brunette male couple with nets, shells and starfish stuck to their clothes and hair (obviously emulating John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy).
Costume Characterized by:
Extreme creativity. A novel twist on a familiar theme. Striking originality of idea and execution.
What it means:
You are either brilliant or very, very sick. Possibly both. You probably should audition for "Project Runway."

I looooove this Halloween dress up stuff - always have!
I go scary - the scarier the better. In my neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY, it's the adults that dress up. And we just go about our normal business in the neighborhood as if we are not in costume. You might see a monster in the PO or supermarket - and certainly a bunch of us in a restaurant or coffee shop - or just strolling around.
Good clean fun! (Love that Elvis/Belushi costume - Yikes!)
Thanks KCC and BKCreative. I just knew this hub would bring out the like-minded "spirits" here on HP. Halloween is my favorite holiday!
Deff prefer the homemade(or home compiled) ones. I bet you are quite the seamstress, Karen!
Love the idea of dressing up and acting "normal." I used to wear a witches hat to work on Halloween. Wore it to meetings and everything! MM
Great Hub!
Thank you oldness49. Glad you enjoyed it! MM
MM This was very enlightening and fun to read. Great food for thought.
I have no idea what I will be for Halloween, but I will think of something (I always do and it's usually something over the top and original). Next year, one of my close friends is getting married on Halloween, which I thought was kooky at first but then he explained to me that he would be giving out masks and we'll still be required to dress up as usual.
I really liked how you shot down those that insist on wearing the same $hit every year (they need to go!). There are tons of ideas out there! One of my favorites is the Karate Kid costume--the shower with the curtains--bonus if you get the same one Ralph Macchio had which was red with white polka-dots!
Thanks, MM! Happy Halloween in advance!
Hi queenbe! Glad you liked it and I hope you get some good ideas for a costume.
Dohn -- I would expect no less that "over the top" from you! I've seen pics of Halloween weddings. Hey, people do all kinds of theme weddings, so why not? I hope you have fun! MM
Cute hub. I haven't dressed up in the last few years but it was fun at the time. We don't get many trick or treaters any more. I miss the old times.
Fun hub....really enjoyed it. I have never dressed up for Halloween and never will. I like who I am and that's who I want to be.
Interesting article! Remembering how co-workers dressed on this day, I would have to say you theory on personal choice is spot on!
Pamela -- I know what you mean. The first year we moved to this neighborhood we got exactly 1 trick or treater. Sad.
Alekhouse -- You go, lady! Why would you want to cover up your delightful personality!!!???
Nancy's Niche -- OMG.That is really scary. But seriously, it's pretty easy to spot who's trying to 'get' what out of their costumes. I could write a followup on actual costumes I have worn and seen others wear and what happened. LOL.
Thanks, friends, for visiting. MM
MM I will be looking for that follow-up lol...I have always made my costumes - bought ones just don't measure up ;P
A good hub, enjoyed reading.
MM you made Halloween into the truth about our alter ego's and I never thought about it this way - very cool. Vampire for me-lots of cape and teeth. How about you? LOL maybe MM costume? Thanks for making me think about this, it was fun! Kimberly
Hey Enelle -- Is that a dare:-)? I will probably save for next year. But I've definitely run the gamut of costumes with reactions deff related to what I wore (and how much I revealed). LOL
RK Sangha -- Thank you, sir.
Kimberly -- I need to take a break from the Supergirl uniform on Halloween. If I'm not inspired I go witch. But if I am inspired, well, watch out:-). MM
Very cute, Mighty Mom! Love your creative take on the meaning of costumes.
Welcome to my Halloween costume hub, Rachaelle Lynn! Thanks for the nice comment! Maybe I will do the same "psychological analysis" for how people decorate their homes for Christmas!
I don't know what my personality is, but I sure like the Halloween personality of the "Naughty Chick."
omw..i love the free mammogram costume! That's hilarious!!!
CR -- I can't tell you how marvelous it is to see you! Been wondering where all my old buds have got to. Should have known you'd show up just in time for Halloween dress up! LOL.
Theherbivorehippi -- Yeah, pretty funny! Glad you weren't offended! MM
That picture of Halloween Elvis....
that's just not right!!
this was a fun hub, MM!
Elisabeth. You're right. I made the photo smaller. But I added another "just not right" one:-).Thanks for visiting. MM
ROFL!! 'Free Mammogram' costume. I wonder how popular he was! I agree...fun hub!
I like "chick magnet". It's a large red magnet that I wear around my neck. All over the magnet are fuzzy yellow baby chicks. . .chick magnet, get it?
I won an award for it a couple years ago, in fact. I usually wear it over my "Sopranos" varsity jacket with blue jeans and my shades. Yup, "Funniest Costume"; that's me.
I might do what I did last year and just put on my orange and black "This IS my Halloween costume". I was hoping my lady friend would give me money to buy a shirt I recently saw. It was Halloween-colored and in nasty green it said "You waqnna see my Halloweenie?"
Chick magnet's a great one! Of course, you are already that so it's not much of a costume now, is it???
Happy Halloween and Happy Halloweenie!
You're absolutely right! What you wear definetely says a lot about your personality. That was a fun read. :)
So I gotta ask,May -- what are YOU gonna be this year? LOL. Something fun but wicked would be my guess! Happy almost Halloween, MM
This hub was great I loved how you broke everything up and how everything was so true lol it was great! Enjoyed the read a ton!
I would classify myself In the sexy category . However I do get tired of being looked at like a peice of meat ! I think I will wear my stopsign costume for the kiddies while I am distributing High sugar products to the youngsters !
JeniMarie -- Glad you liked it. People can't help themselves on Halloween!
Tony -- You can't hide your true sexy self. A stop sign won't stop anyone. LOL:-). Thanks for visiting! MM
Great hub MM, but I do find one thing odd. Here in the UK a Halloween costume is all about spookiness, e.g. werewolves, Vampyres, Ghosts, Witches etc, yet in the USA it seems any fancy dress costume will do, in other words, even a costume not spooky is acceptable, in spite of the occasion. Can you tell me why this is?? Thanks.
Me? I'm thinking of being human. Theres no way I can wear my costumes to my new job. :(
Actually Mayhmong, humans may well be the scariest of all.... LOL
Every year at halloween I let my hair down and change from being a wicked b-witch to a nice pleasant little lady. The transition is over the minute midnight hits though so all beware...buaahahahahah
I love the hub as always a great one
regards Zsuzsy
Great hub, i like the sexy one :)
LOL May -- Hard to picture you as a "human" as your avatar is so firmly entrenched in my brain as "May."
Misty -- I have no educated answer to your question except that Americans tend to take anything British (or European) and bastardize it to their own way of thinking (or not thinking). Halloween is just a big dressup party. It's like Mardi Gras and a fancy dress ball combined with traditional Halloween scary. Pretty much anything goes.
Here where I live in Calif there is also something called the "Erotic Exotic Ball." I have never been but you can just imagine.
Zsuzsy-- Love the new avatar! You've issued your warning, so we'll be on the lookout for the change and change back. Although to me you'll always have elements of both in equal measure (and that's a good thing! one cannot be too good or too bitchy!)
Richimag. Don't tell me, let me guess. You're male:-)!
Seriously. I appreciate your visiting and the comment. MM
I am definitely the wife of a pirate!
I reckon I am just boring. I traditionally dress as myself. I always use my birthday suit, it has a few stitches here and there and a few thingies dangling. LOL But I aways get noticed. I do use body paint, a pumpkin on the rear and a monkey wrench on the front. I'm just handy like that.
Great hub MM! The last time I dressed up I went as a Catholic schoolgirl--plaid skirt, white shirt, cardigan, knee socks, and high heels. Bill went as a priest. We got lots of compliments but people kept asking why I wasn't dressed as a Catholic school BOY.
Hello a4qb, What do wives of pirates wear? Piratess outfits? Cabin wench togs? I bet you and your pirate hubby look fetching.
Ralwus, I feel like I want to have a Halloween party this year and invite you (among other Hubber pals). That costume is... inspiring. Hope you don't live in too cool of a climate!
Pam, hello! Your description sounds like that SNL character whose name I can't remember or the comedienne either (although she's in a commercial now with Chevy Chase). She dressed exactly like that and always put her fingers under her armpits to sniff. Very, very funny.
Ha ha, I get the comment about why you weren't a Catholic school boy. Next time be an altar boy. They are the ones who get the most attention :-).
Thanks friends for visiting. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
LOL!
haha I tend to have cleavage ALL the time lol I guess that means I have to be a naughty something or other for Halloween!! lol BTW...how did you get that pic of my hubby's costume last year?!?! ;)
Hello Nambahu. Glad you got a laugh!
Janetta -- I'm with you. I struggle to HIDE my ample cleavage. But it sure is fun to be naughty!
Where'd I get the photo? Why your hubby sent it to me. I want my hubby to use it this year! LOL. Thanks for visiting. MM
Love the hub! I think I have been every creature for Halloween...my alter egos...
cute article. I used to like to dress up as a bum when i was a kid. Any link to my being flat broke now as an adult?
ran across your response to my comment...
I was joking, thought the picture was hilarious!!
Happy Halloween, MightyMom
Hi Kaya -- Variety of costume shows a balanced personality. Congratulations! LOL
Lisa -- That's an excellent question. Very interesting choice of costume. At least you are consistent!
Elisabeth -- Ha Ha. Happy Halloween back to you, my dear. MM
Janetta needs to dress as the Pie Shop girl with her cleavage. I'd like to see that.
Well I think that's a swell idea, ralwus. How about we plan a Hub Pages Halloween Bash in the Forums (hard to pick which one we'd have it in -- probably entertainment). We can all dress up and even have prizes for the best costume. I think that would be fun! MM
Lisa -- That's an excellent question. Very interesting choice of costume. At least you are consistent!
I love the fact that my alter ego gets to show her personality off, actually its not just Halloween when she decides to flaunt herself around... She is unique and fierce and at times has a different personality from others. This was a good hub and I can truly relate to it. Dressing up is the best thing ever invented and to even add a personality that others may be scared or too shy to show off makes it even better. I feel sexy and good about myself when I can step out of my shell and be who i want to be ;)
Hello Azalea Lii. Sounds like you enjoy dressing up and letting your fierce sexy side strut her stuff. I think that's great and hope you have a wonderful time on Halloween! Mm
I do not dress up for Halloween myself, but cool to see all the costumes. By tenth grade the dressing up thing was over for me, but sometimes I wear a Halloween pin or jewelry!
Hey there SP! That's interesting to know about you. Sometimes a discreet piece of jewelry -- earrings or a pin -- is enough. Same goes for Christmas!
Love this hub... great work.
Since I was a kid I've stuck with witch costumes. These are some great creative ideas! Good work!
The 31st of October is an important date. I was born! Love live all saints day!
this was fun to read! I don't really do it anymore but back in the day I went as a French Maid a few times and actually caused a car wreck when I bent over to fix the strap on my heels...and WHACK! a guy ran his car right into another guy's car because they were both looking my direction! OOOOPS!
A few other times I went as a Playboy bunny, a Leapord and even Lara Croft Tomb Raider! it was fun!
Oh dear, I have to think of a costume myself and am wracking my brain. Have been in the past, Baby Jane, Frieda Kahlo, Andy Warhol, and Jerry Garcia. I'd love to be the Dude but don't think I'm in the mood to wear facial hair.
I hear ya, Dolores. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood to wear facial hair. I must say, tho, from the list of your previous costumes, I know you'll come up with something offbeat. Please take photos and post em! Hope it's a good Halloween for you, MM
A fun Halloween for you as well, MM!
AWESOME! I am the creative type! I went as a made-up Superhero and it was sooooo FUN! Plus I didn't have to worry about my various body parts being grabbed....
Cool! A mad up superhero. I like that!
All the best mighty mom - I miss my mama bless her

Awesome hub! I think I've done all of these at one time or another, but mostly I'm the creative one. My costumes are always something I whip up.
