Zircon Gemstone Jewelry

Zircon is the astrological substitute of diamond and used in most navratna jewelry as it looks like diamond but costs less than Diamond. Zircon is a very beautiful gemstone. The name of this stone seems to have come from the Persian word ‘zargun’ which means ‘golden colored’. This gem comes in several colors and shades out of which the purest is the colorless. Depending on the impurities found in the stone it is also found in a variety of colors like the blue, green, red, yellow, brown, violet, aquamarine, orange etc. All colors of Zircon are used as gem for jewelry. However, the most sought out Zircons are the colorless, blue and green in color. The names associated with the different varieties of Zircon are Hyacinth, jacinth, jargon, starlite, matura diamond etc.

There is some mythological value in relation with this gem. I recollect reading somewhere that some Hindu poets have written that the ‘Kalpavriksha’ have leaves of Zircon. Zircon is associated with the Zodiac signs of Aries, Capricorn and Sagittarius. It is also the birthstone of those born in the month of December. This stone is said to bring in success, wealth and fame to the wearer. This gem is also said to give protection from enemies as well. Zircon rings and pendants are very popular with jewelry lovers. However, when buying this stone don't be fooled by cubic zirconia, the lab substitute of diamond. This is an excellent stone for those suffering from insomnia. It is also said to prevent nightmares and give a good nights sleep. This is a balancing stone affecting all chakras and popular as a reliever of pain and increases appetite. Zircon is a mined stone and found in several countries including Myanmar, Australia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Thailand.

Zircon has the tendency to crack, scratch or break. So this stone must be set in protective settings and should be handled with extreme care. This stone should be kept away from high temperatures and chemicals and when not in use can be stored in individual jewelry boxes. This gem can be cleaned with lukewarm water and a mild dish soap using a soft tooth brush for scrubbing. It can then be wiped and pat dry using a soft towel.

Zircon Gemstone is the Birthstone of December and also a cheaper substitute for diamond.

Thanks for the compliment Laila. My first introduction with Zircon happened over 2 years ago when i purchased a navrratna bracelet from a friends shop because i thought it would go well with all color dresses. After hearing the price i asked if all the stones are genuine. He said 'yes' and i asked him, ' When you have an Original and big size Diamond in the bracelet how can the price be so less. When the shop assistant said that the stone is Zircon i felt so ashamed at my ignorance and decided that I would acquire knowledge about gemstones. Having gemmologist, Numerologist and Astrologer as friends helped me in my journey.

Thanks for the compliment, Muthusamy. This stone is available in all jewelry shops. Just make sure it is not cubic zircon. The maintainance and cleaning process is given in the last paragraph of the hub.

At times it looks prettier than real diamond. It's hard to tell the difference.
