Dream: What Does it Possibly Denotes?
People dream everyday in different levels at different moments. We have all experienced dreaming at one point in our life. There are times that dreams can be clearly remembered but most often it is forgotten. It has been stored in our unconsciousness level that its contents has not yet reached our consciousness. There were different theories written about dreams - - - theories about the psychic activity of the waking state, the paranoia and amentia of dream, the partial wakefulness, the prevailing dream, and the phantasy (fantasy) dream. There were also a lot of contradictions and disagreements about these principles. However, we shall focus more on the possible meaning of our dreams rather than dwelling much on these theories.
What does dream means? I assume that we are familiar with the Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, Ph.D. He defines dream as a simple fulfillment of a wish. “He believes that dreams begin in a form that is as rational as waking thoughts, but that they are disguised because the conscious cannot accept them. The original dream is called the latent dream, and the disguised dream – the one you remember when you wake up – is called the manifest dream.”1 So what does our dream possibly denotes? It is basically a sound expression of the unconsciousness. The dreamer seems to be brought to another world. Our dreams are usually derived from our experiences, fears, anxieties, or wants in life. It can sometimes be found in the events of our childhood. We usually dream of what we see, what we have said or done, what we have undergone, and what we are yearning to achieve or our aspiration.
I have experienced having my own dreams. I dreamt of starting to have white hairs at an early age. It was only after I have studied about the interpretation of dreams that I understood it. It was all because of my fear of growing old that I always wanted to look good. I have also tutored a 2nd grade student who always dreamed of being in a dark place. He was afraid to be left alone. His parents later found out that his nanny locked him in his closet when she gets mad when nobody was around. Dreams can be a reflection of our uncertainties in life.
