Sleek, Sexy Titles For Massive Traffic
Did I hook you? Now that I have you reading I have to back up my sexy title and keep you aroused with some equally tantalizing content.
It has been said that you should eschew clichés when writing but even that is a little cliché, so here I go--you can’t judge a book by its cover and that may be true, but in this day and age of flashing screens and instant gratification one has to use all she’s got to attract attention. Without an eye-catching, interesting title you will get left behind like blockbuster(they got left behind).
I am new to hub pages, three weeks young, but I am learning fast. I have almost one thousand views, with my eight hubs-and that's exciting. It is fun to be read-- I am becoming a writer! Right now I am not focused on the commercial aspect although, I have to admit, I want to make money writing in the near future.
During my short time on hub pages, and my own experience, as a product of our fast pace modern civilization, I have seen that in order to attract a reader you have to start with a bang. I remember my tenth-grade English teacher giving a demonstration on public speaking. She nonchalantly walked to the front of the classroom with a large textbook in her hands. The class wasn’t paying attention, whispering, yawning--and then Bang! Mrs. Difrederico slammed the heavy textbook on the ground and all of our heads shot up, our eyes wider then an owl’s. She said, “Public Speaking!” In a booming voice, “you need to get the attention of your audience right away.” I think that advice very much transfers to article writing, especially in the way that Hubpages is set up.
As a newbie I find that most of my traffic comes when I first publish a hub. That means that most people see it while hub-hopping, I think, because the newest hubs are put into that system for a day or two. I enjoy hub-hopping, but I have to admit, there is a lot of smelly regurgitated manure out there. I have noted that when I am hub hopping I blast past the boring stuff only reading a line our two-- sometimes only the title. When I come across something interesting, I read for a bit, skim really, and then rate up or down, and sometimes on a rare occasion I read the whole article if it manages to tease and caress my fickle attention.
As we become more well known authors, hopefully, a fellowship is created by our good work and people come to trust us as a source of entertainment and stimulation. Thus, we can rely less on hub hopping and luck--but for now, in my case, and many cases, we depend on the systems that provide us with readers and we can’t take that for granted, we need every reader. We have to draw them in and keep them reading. That is why an incredible, sexy title is important.
My suggestion is simple. Really pay attention to your title, think about it, consider it. I am not talking about search engine optimization-I don’t know the first thing about that--yet. I am talking about making your title so good, that a reader, an actual person, is so intrigued by it that they have to follow up on your article and see if it is worthy of such an interesting, sexy title. And truthfully, if you come up with a great title, you should be able to follow that up with entertaining informative content, because obviously you are a creative person.
Here are some ideas and loose rules on how to come up with a good title:
It needs to be relevant- You could just put up an eye-catching title and then have an unrelated article. That is not fair to the reader. She will feel cheated and you will lose in the long run. So keep it relevant to your subject.
Alliteration- I love this word. Why do we remember the names Marilyn Monroe, Donald Duck, Peter Parker? Because they are alliterated they all start with similar sounds. They are easy to remember and fun. I considered this title-- Sleek Sexy Titles to Titillate Traffic To Your Hub! (I just changed my title, he he)
Keep It Short- Short, sweet and sexy! Keep it simple. I always try for less then ten words, preferably shorter.
Catchy/Sexy- Write down a bunch of titles, call up your little brother and ask him what he likes from your options, talk to your friends for their opinions, the more you talk about your writing the better it becomes. People are different and we have different tastes. Ask around, it can only help.
Take a Deep Breath- You have plenty of time to think about your title. Maybe it will come right away and the title itself will bring about the article. Or maybe you will write the article first and the title will come through your writing. Basically relax and it will come.
I hope you enjoyed this hub and that it was entertaining and useful. Please leave some examples of your good, eye-catching titles, and also, if you have any of advise of your own, we would love to hear it. Thanks for reading!
