What homeschool children need for college admittance
A lot of people who are opposed to homeschooling will make the claim that homeschooled children will find it a lot more difficult to get into college. This is because they believe that only those children who have attended a traditional school will be able to get into college. Fortunately, this is not true. In fact, today a lot of colleges are eagerly accepting homeschooled children. Each year, the number of children who are accepted continues to grow.
There is 1 big hurdle that a lot of homeschool children do face though. This is the fact that they do not have traditional transcripts and a diploma to use whenever they are applying for college admittance. Yet, there is even a way around this. Homeschool children simply need to obtain a GED. Like all other children, homeschooled children will also have to take the SAT.
Another thing that homeschooled children can do to help themselves get into college is to put together a portfolio. Inside of this portfolio there should be a detailed account of all of the courses that the child has completed, the results of any of the advanced placement tests that the child has taken (i.e. the ACT). If a child has taken any pre-college community education classes or has done any type of volunteer work, this should also be included within this portfolio. A homeschool child should also consider putting character references inside of this portfolio. These can come from the child's family and friends. If the child has any work experience, then asking their employer for a character reference is also a good idea. The child may also consider writing an essay in which they explains why they want to attend college and what their goals for the future are.
Yet another way in which a lack of records can be taken care of is by enrolling your child in an online homeschool educational program. These schools will actually provide your child with report cards and a hard copy of their transcripts. In the eyes of a college admissions department, these documents are usually sufficient enough. You can easily find one of these schools by using your favorite Search Engine. The number of accredited online school programs that are available to you may actually surprise you. Of course, these schools will be in charge of the curriculum that your child uses, but this may be worthwhile just so your child can get a report card and transcript. Plus it will also save you a great deal of time as well.
Regardless of what type of schooling a child may have had, they will have to take the time to find a college that is best suited for their educational needs and goals. This is a decision that will require a lot of thought. Several different schools should also be contacted in order to see what they have to offer. Your child should then make their final choice after they discover what school are most willing to assist them with the admission process as a homeschool graduate. In the end, you will probably end up being surprised by just how many colleges really are receptive to the needs and desires of students who have been homeschooled.
