Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is a procedure used to restore vaginal tone and appearance by removing excess tissue and tightening vaginal muscles.

Vaginal cosmetic surgery is becoming as fashionable as other cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation and liposuction. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) vaginal cosmetic surgery has increased almost by 30% in only one year and the term “designer vagina” has been coined to describe the desire to have a “perfect looking” vagina. However, vaginal rejuvenation is not always such a superfluous procedure as it might sound. For some patients, vaginal rejuvenation means the end of painful intercourse, the end of stress incontinence and a boost in self esteem for those who have been seriously traumatised around their vaginal area.

Vaginal Rejuvenation is a wide term that can be used to describe 3 different procedures:

1) Labiaplasty which is labia reduction and beautification,

2) Vaginoplasty which involves tightening of the vaginal muscles, and

3) Clitoral Unhooding or hoodectomy which aims to increase sexual satisfaction by heightening sensations in the clitoris.

Costs

Costs vary largely depending on the country where you have your surgery, the clinic facilities and the experience of the doctor. In the USA, costs can be anything from 3,000 to 12,000 dollars

Who has vaginal surgery?

Anyone in average physical condition or good health can be a candidate for vaginoplasty surgery. Women who decide to have vaginal surgeries include:

  • Those women whose vaginal areas have stretched due to pregnancy, vaginal delivery (the actual passage of the foetus) or to instrumentation during operative delivery.
  • Those women whose vaginal areas have stretched due to aging.
  • Women who suffer from stress incontinence.
  • Women who want their labial lips reduced, enhanced or re-shaped.
  • Women who have experienced vaginal trauma due to insertion injury (eg, from forceful coitus, insertion of foreign body during sexual assault, impaling injury secondary to a fall)
  • Those who want to increase their sexual pleasure.
  • Women who for religious, social or moral reasons want to reconstruct their hymen to its original form.

Vaginal Rejuvenation by Laser, Why and how

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that can reduce and reshape the skin that covers the female clitoris and vaginal opening.  Sometimes the procedure is done purely for cosmetic reasons or to increase sexual pleasure but most of the time the procedure is done to relieve pain in women who experience painful intercourse because of the size of their labia or who feel discomfort during everyday activities (exercise, long time sitting or walking) because their labia is too long and rubs painfully against their body.

During labiaplasty, the surgeon basically trims the involved labia minora or majora, carefully removing excess and unnecessary skin to reduce discomfort and to improve the appearance of the vagina.

Thirty million American women suffer from symptoms of vaginal relaxation and stress urinary incontinence.

Vaginoplasty

Women who have experienced multiple natural childbirths know very well how much stress their vaginal muscles experience during the delivery. As a result of the stress, sometimes women can be left with loose and weak, vaginal muscles. For some women the problem is easily solved with exercise but for others the condition might carry on worsening with every pregnancy, childbirth and age.

Vaginoplasty, is a procedure that can correct the above problem correcting overstretched vaginal muscles. Basically, the surgeon removes a segment of the vaginal lining and repositions the underlying muscles, resulting in noticeably tight inner and outer vaginal walls which result in greater contraction strength and control of the vaginal muscles, thus enhancing one’s sexual life as a direct result.

Risks of Surgery

All surgical procedures have some degree of risk.  Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally.  Major complications are rare.

The AmericanCollege of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, warns that vaginal surgery procedures lack supporting data regarding safety and efficacy. In some cases it can worsen a problem by leading to decreased sensory perception of the clitoris and the rest of the genital area.

Other side effects might include infection and scarring.

Conclusion:

There is much controversy about the need for vaginal rejuvenation surgery and most people see the procedure as unnecessary.  However, vaginal rejuvenation can solve many physical problems such as stress incontinence, a small problem that can have a big impact in a woman’s life.   Each person has her own reasons behind their decision to undergo surgery, the important thing is to discuss your expectations with your surgeon so you are well informed about the benefits of the surgery for your particular case.

  • HubMob weekly topic: Searching for Perfection: Cosmetic Surgery

I was at a Joyce Meyer conference in Houston a few years ago and when she came out on stage one of the first things she addressed was that she had in fact recently had cosmetic surgery. She asked the audience to not judge her and explained her justification for having the surgery as something like this- You wouldn't live in a house for fourty years and never redecorate would you? Never replace the carpet or paint the walls or add a few throw pillows or chair covers? My body is my house. I have lived in it for over fourty years and all I have done is a little remodeling. As I tried to explain here, vaginal rejuvenation is not only a cosmetic procedure, it can also relieve pain and discomfort for those women who suffer from stress incontinence or painful intercourse Obsessedpreserver, and I don't see how someone can be happy while in pain!

Great hub indeed, also a helpful one, procedures relieving pain have an extra advantage over cosmetic procedures done for mere aesthetic purposes.

Great hub...if it makes you feel better and especially if it eases pain...it is a good thing.

I do agree soni2006, thousands of women suffer in silence because they do not know about these procedures, and then, whenever we hear about them is to be banalized. Vaginal rejuvenation can change a woman's life.

Thanks for the support Tom.

Hmmmm, this is the first time I've seen a different side of vaginal rejuvenation. It's a different ballgame when you are dealing with health problems and this is the way to solve those problems. This made me think Anath. But hey, come to think of it, even if the reason behind undergoing this procedure is for cosmetic purposes only, I don't think those that undergo this should be "condemned" (sorry can't think of a better term). It's their choice, their money, their body. Great hub Anath =)

There are always several sides to the same story. Some people do undergo vaginal rejuvenation merely for cosmetic reason while others do it to relieve a life of pain and discomfort. Like you say emievil, whatever YOUR personal reason you should not be judge for it.

I had no idea that there was a medical reason for this. As I say about most things, 'If it makes you happy and doesn't hurt too many people, Go for it!'.

Now how about this whole Anal Bleaching thing? Is there a medical need for that?

Well if it helps in the pain area of course I would say do it, other than that if I were a women I wouldn’t have a comedic procedure done I don’t think. But that is totally the individuals call.

Well said bloodnlatex!

Exactly, it is a very personal choice iwhcpanties. I would not doubt to go under any procedure that I think might improve my looks.

I just had a little surgery, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who does not like pain, but people deserve their personal choices. The clitoral surgery troubles me, however, because I think it points to a partner who is just not doing their job. Well, to be honest, it all troubles me, a little, cosmetic surgery in general. A healthy, well-exercized woman's body is attractive in any shape it happens to arrive in, I think. :)

I think that sometimes there is no choice, like in the case of women who are in pain and need surgery to relieve their pain. Vaginal rejuvenation it is not just about vanity or sexual pleasure (although it can help both) it is also about relieving symptoms such as pain, incontinence and discomfort during everyday tasks. Thanks for sharing your opinion Jess

I would have to agree. While some consider vanity as the sole purpose of vaginal rejuvenation, this is not always the case. Great hub.
