Gentle Heart Beats

Valentine

There is

A heart-shaped

Emptiness

Inside of me,

Awaiting

Your return

Without anxiety.

_____© Nellieanna H. Hay

Yes, you're right.

I am greedy

Where you're concerned, ~

And spoiled.

You and you alone

Fill me completely

To overflowing

When you stay.

You lift me

To the highest peak,

Caress my very soul;

And when we speak

It's ecstasy.

I want to please you

Every way.

I cannot have enough

Of pleasing you!

______© Nellieanna H. Hay

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

When you want me there

With you ~

Know that I am.

I learn to walk on air

To where you are -

At speed of light.

I see you with my heart;

For part of you

Is always within sight.

______© Nellieanna H. Hay

'I'll write a poem for you', you said,

Among other things

I hungered to hear.

I hope you do.

I wished we could say it, do it

Every way it can be

Said and done.

'I need so much to be loved', you said,

Among the things

I thirsted for.

I knew you meant that

You needed to be loved

Exquisitely, profoundly, unconditionally.

I do and you are.

Everything

You ever said and did,

I treasure.

______© Nellieanna H. Hay

They're always changing holidays.

But I don't recall

When they changed Valentine's

To Thursday.

______© Nellieanna H. Hay

Carefully, cautiously,

The door begins to open.

The dormant room inside begins

To stir;

Its insides enlightened,

Heightened, brightened

By the hope of love.

Its thin, stagnant air,

Too long denied sustaining life,

Now eagerly absorbs

Clean, crisp, vital

Replenishment.

At last we dare

To think of all it was,

All it might have been,

If given just a chance to care,

To reach and touch again -

Somehow,

Somewhere.

A single flower speaks unendlessly to those who wait upon it to do so. To sit in such company one is taken to places where secrets bloom in exquisite simplicity, in visions unrevealed by conversation and in beauty reserved for hearts who want only to listen. Today you are such a flower. Happy Valentines day butterfly.

This is an absolutely beautiful collection of lovely and loving poetry on this special day. I will share it with my wife, who made me a lovely card, while I presented one from a store.

Nellieanna 3 years ago from TEXAS Author

Dear, dear Faith - thank you! These poems were written over time and are close to my heart; so fitting love experience any time it graces one's life. But it's a major factor that all were written in or around Valentine's days, several ON Feb. 14ths of their years.

I hope the song played smoothly. It was one thing which had me up till all hours getting this project finished & published to be here on Valentine's!. It breaks up when I play it on here. I tried it on another computer, though, and it was smooth.

If any breaking up is encountered in it, please let me know. I do so love the song and it FITS the occasion.

Happy Valentine's to you too, my friend.

Billy - absolutely - it's an occasion for poets. In fact the entire month of February seems made for poets and poetry! Thank you for lovely comments and compliments! I'm deeply honored!

I saw this and immideately felt sad, yet joyful for your wonderful life and the sharing with George that you had. I want to wish you a very Happy Valentines Day my friend and I will be back to re-read and comment further, I just saw this appear before leaving for work and I had to come in and say hello and give you my wishes. I'm on the grave-yard shift where I got for my inspiration:-) for the next 4 nights. Peace and blessings I send to you always my sweet poet.

Leslie - aha! Your keen observations about this lover of life are supremely accurate! There is fire in the furnace. - of course! Why not, for heavens' sakes? One just enters new time as it chugs along. But one can soar and need not chug! So it's practical if the beating heart is operating in a functioning body, too! ;-) I can't figure out why not! There are no 'rules' or 'conditions' that I've found!

Thank you, my dear. Sorry you had the dreadful flu bug. Hope you're soon all better. Keep taking care of it.

I can't wait to see who'll be your lollipop choice! I just keep getting enthusiastic praises for my choice of YOU for it and am so in agreement

Alan! I've been missing you and am glad to see you! This amazing comment just reminds me of some of the many reasons! How beautiful.

It is a lovely day here, this Feb. 14th, - almost balmy and one of those days when one is reminded how great it is to be alive! A cold snap tomorrow won't change that!

Hope your day has been wonderful!

Jim, I'm honored that you'll share this with your wife on this day made for just just things! Her personally-made card says much, but so does your specially selected one for her!

George's birthday was the 13th, so we had some fun traditions. One was a 'perennial card' which I gave him many years back and occasionally reissued it as a special thing, the joke being that the first time I did that, he didn't recognize it! It was sort of a 'one-card-fits-any' occasion in which love is the main theme, but it was never 'pinned down' to any one of them! It was also a 'like mother, like daughter' thing. My mother single-handedly invented recycling, not just cards - but they were a special case. She would sign a card she sent on the bottom 1/4" area so that the recipient could just trim off a quarter inch and resend it, like new! haha.

But my 'perennial card' gathered patina over the years and became the most wondrous card that could be sent!

Thank you for your visit and comments!

Oh Nellieanna,

I can get lost in each of these beautiful expressions of love.

I am listening with absolutely no interruption to one of the most beautiful songs ever...how very fitting, my sweet woman.

Thinking of you this Valentine's Day with much love, Maria

Nellieanna profile image

Vincent - not too sad, I hope. I'm glad that joyful rose up! It is always LIFE that's what counts; while one has it, it's in progress and rules, even though it's deprived of my love in the here and now. Whatever else there may be, the good which was and is - rules.

I'm most honored that you took time to check out my little hub before leaving for work. Of course, the day for Valentines is at hand, so if not now, when?

I hope your shift will yield you much inspiration. Your peace & blessings made it! Thank you.

Nellieanna....Your love poetry is beautiful, and knowing that you lived such a wonderful love story with George imbues each phrase with special meaning. The painting by the amazing Ann Lund Christensen (who puts me to shame with her accomplishments as a quadriplegic using a mouth device) adds another special touch to this Valentine's Day hub.

I love the idea of your 'perennial card'--a delightful idea!

Voted Up, Awesome and Beautiful, and shared

Happy Valentine's Day....Jaye

Jaye - Ah! yes - isn't that art amazing? It's one of a dozen works of mouth & foot painting prints I found among my saved treasures. Ann Lund Christensen is from Denmark and has cerebral palsy since birth. Each of these amazing artists has such courage and talent, they truly put me to shame. They just refuse to let extreme adversity stop them from pursuing life and their dreams. You're so right that is adds something special here and now!

I smile when I think of that perennial card! Thank you for your visit, greetings and lovely comments, my friend!

Awesome, extremely romantic and discreetly sensual. Honestly, Nellieanna, you've blown me away. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Fleck is one of my top favorites. This is the first time I hear Celine's version and I must say it has a magnificent alluring tone of its own.

Absolutely beautiful, Nellieanna, and in particularly the arty presentation.

Nellieanna 3 years ago from TEXAS Author

My sweet cyber daughter, Martie! Lovely to see you visiting this hub and leaving me such a beautiful comment! I've loved the original Roberta Flack version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" ever since I first heard it in 1972 when she first introduced it; but I'm a Celine fan, too, and her version seemed to be just made for this hub.

I just got a new iPhone, though, and have been adding iTunes to it - I have Roberta's version on it! :-)

Thank you, love! Hope you're doing well! Hugs.

Dear Nellieanna:

I just checked into "Heartbreak Hotel" a few days ago, so this beautiful, sensitive, romantic and heartfelt poem was probably not what my aching heart needed to see at this stage of recovery. :0)

You touched on so many emotions that I have felt these past few days. Even though your poem is sending me into an emotional relapse, I just want you to know that your wording, your imagery, and your understanding of true love is remarkable. You said it all.

Peace be with you - C.J. Sledgehammer

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 3 years ago from TEXAS Author

CJ - Your message is deeply received. Even though this collection of love poems was the antithesis of what your heart needed at that moment, please know that mine has survived such setbacks, too, and has survived to garner the beautiful, positive residue and to let the debris fall away, if that's any comfort. Love is the prize, even when it's in difficult straits. May your heart find respite too. Hugs and know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thank you for your lovely comments. I'm glad you came by.

CJ Sledgehammer 3 years ago

Nellieanna, my dear, what are you still doing up at this late hour? :0)

Thank you for your kind words and for your sympathy and understanding. Yes, your words comfort me like a warm blanket. They say, "Misery loves company", but I prefer the company of inspiring and wonderful people such as yourself.

Thank you for being my friend.

Peace be with you - C.J. Sledgehammer

Yeah, I'm a bad girl, slipping into my bad habit of staying up too late. It's a habit of a lifetime which I must very aggressively battle. When given the choice of arbitrarily marching off to bed or communing with a friend such as you, though - or writing a hub or . . . .--- well - I'm caught up in it. I don't really recommend it though. At least, I've no trouble falling asleep once I'm horizontal & it's quality sleep I get. But still - more normal hours are preferable.

I was finishing my latest hub, "Life Is Energy" Tuesday night and finally, when I published it, lay down at 6:45 Wed. morning and slept till 9:30 and have been up ever since, but for a couple of catnaps sitting right here! Sometimes I just stay up if I'm still up when the sun rises, and go all day and into the next night before giving it up. At least I went to bed that time!

But I have done my bedtime ablutions now and am heading up to bed as soon as I finish - I want to respond to what you've added.

There's no escaping the anguish when it's real & raw, nor should we deny our whole range of heartfelt emotions, both the joyous and sorrowful, lest we become frozen zombies; but there must come the time of letting it go & fully embracing life's bounty once more. We somehow know when the time of sorrow has passed and needs to be released. Too often, though, people mire down in it and subsequently miss all the life going on, which, in a way, is a responsibility to meet and live.

Truly, misery often does seek company. It's logical in a way to want to be assured that one's predicaments aren't unique to oneself. But if that company has chosen to bog itself down in the misery even when hanging on to is becomes by choice, then it's not a healthy environment to seek or inhabit for oneself. Courage and faith require & assist us to move on.

And now - I'm really going to bed! Good night!

Well said, Nellieanna.

Thank you, dear friend, and may God give you sweet dreams. - C.J.

Wonderful work! Your poems are beautiful... I tried, but I can't choose my favorite here.

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 3 years ago from TEXAS Author

Add Your Comment..Dear Monis Mas - I appreciate those encouraging words! Thank you. It's rather good that you can't choose 'just one'. I've always felt my poetry needs support from itself, since there are threads of meaning between them. It's a reason, I think, that I publish them in small collections, rather than singly. There are some in my repertoire which, to me, truly stand alone, like the cream that rises to the top of the milk pail, but there's all that milk supporting them! :-) Hugs.

Monis Mas profile image

Monis Mas 3 years ago

I love your metaphor about milk, clever! Keep writing you poetry, dear Nellieanna, there is something special in your work, I can't exactly put a finger on it. But I think that is the whole point of poetry itself - to remain mysterious...

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 3 years ago from TEXAS Author

Dear Monis Mas - Thank you! There's little danger I'd ever stop writing and thinking about writing. After all these - lo - many years, it's as natural as breathing. If I were prevented pen and paper or computer and keys, I suppose I'd find a little pebble and write on a sidewalk!

Maybe that's why it's a bit indefinable - because it's authentically personal. The mystery of another person is both an intriguing facet of him or her, and the fact that it IS from and in that person feels an abiding comfort, does it not? I'm always pleased to recognize a poet or artist just by his style, no matter how puzzling it may also be. What's not so puzzling is that it had to have emanated from him and no one else. :-)

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 3 years ago from TEXAS Author

Thank you, Cristale! That's so nice to hear! It does expresse real emotion, because I can't fake it! :-)

I don't know how

To fake feelings I don't feel

Or hide

The ones I do.

I must say this hub presentation has my name all over it , my sweet dear first lady of the Hubs, and I'll tell you why.

This past Monday I rushed myself to the local ER because of a heart condition (I think it was from staring at Deborah Brook's picture for too long , lol) and they came me in there for most of the day. They said my blood pressure was sky high due to my stress levels. I had many examinations and x-rays and just today I came home from the city and my family doctor back to the glory of God's lake. I have good news - my heart is fine and I can celebrate my birthday on Sunday in relative good health. During an ultra sound this week I actually saw my own heart beating away - it was quite a powerful moment to see that.

Your words always have heart and I think I appreciate the words here more than ever because of my health scare this week. The heart is a beautiful thing , Miss N, and long may it keep beating so we can continue to great moving creative art like the poetic sentiments on your page here.

Sending you warm wishes from Colin, Tiffy and Gabriel and hoping sincerely all is well with you these days. lake erie time 2;55pm

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 3 years ago from TEXAS Author

Oh, Colin! I see why this hub spoke to you about gentle heart beats! Thank you for visiting hit and sharing why!

I'm so very glad your heart and, I hope, your BP are in good condition! That's a scare, though. However, I'd think that Debbie's picture would sooth your heart! (what do I know - haha! - I'm not a guy! :-)

My beloved had heart issues, so I know how scary it is at any level. Of course the first things one must do for the heart and BP is revise one's diet and stress issues. Nothing is worth putting those vital things at risk. I'm sure they told you that!

Yes, long may the hearts keep beating. I wish you a most happy upcoming birthday, dear friend! So you're a Gemini! My rising sign. Communicators.

Hugs, too! (Now don't let the hugs trigger any health issues! ;-) My best to you, Tiffy & Gabriel for a most enjoyable upcoming weekend!

Thank you, Audrey, my friend. I appreciate your visit. Sorry to be long replying.

It's my first day on the computer in nearly 5 days. I'm very slowly recovering from a bad fall Friday which sprained both wrists and banged me up a good bit. But I'm blessed that it wasn't a lot LOT worse. My wrists caught me from hitting a brick wall very hard and dangerously.

So my head only suffered scrapes, black eyes, scratched glasses. Otherwise - well - brick walls are very hard on heads!
