Voldemort aka Tom Marvolo Riddle – Quotes, Horcruxes, Photos and More

Updated on February 17, 2012

This hub is for the Dark Lord, you know who…he who must not be named…the most brilliant and cruel student Hogwarts has ever seen…none other than Lord Voldemort a.ka. Tom Marvolo Riddle. I love Harry Potter and Harry Potter won’t be so fascinating without Voldemort.

Voldemort’s bio

Birth name: Tom Marvolo Riddle
Born: 31 December, 1926
Died: 2 May, 1998
Blood status: Half-blood
House: Slytherin
Wand: Yew, 13½”, phoenix feather

Voldemort was considered as the most powerful dark wizard of all time. JK Rowling described him as "the most evil wizard for hundreds and hundreds of years." Voldemort was a half-blood wizard, son of Tom Riddle Sr., a wealthy muggle who abandoned his wife, and Merope Gaunt, who died shortly after childbirth. He was raised in an orphanage before he attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There he was sorted into Slytherin house quite because he’s the heir and last descendant of Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of Hogwarts. He’s got that kind and polite looks but in reality Tom Riddle was cruel, manipulative and power hungry. He was fascinated with the dark arts and was exceptionally good at it. He aimed to achieve pure-blood dominance in the world of magic though he’s a half-blood. He has killed a lot of people including Harry’s parents. He’s the most feared wizard, very much feared that no one could speak of his name. He was killed after his wand backfired as he was trying to kill Harry Potter in the Great Hall of Hogwarts.

How did Tom Riddle become Voldemort?

So often though you’ve watched the whole Harry Potter films and read the books many times, you still forget how Tom Riddle became Voldemort? Yeah there’s a shuffle of letters from Tom Riddle’s name but how exactly is it? You see the phrase I am Lord Voldemort is an anagram of Tom’s complete name which is Tom Marvolo Riddle. Wicked! Because of that amazing trick, some fans have tried other anagrams from TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE. See them below.

Voldemort’s name why can’t it be mentioned…

Voldemort, being the most feared and sadistic wizard, has been referred as the Dark Lord by everyone and his followers, well except Dumbledore and Harry. People only use you-know-who or The Dark Lord when mentioning him. Why is it forbidden to speak his name? Voldemort banned and jinxed his own name so that he could track anyone who says it. He’s not the most cruel and brilliant wizard for no reason. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a taboo is placed upon the name, such that Voldemort or his followers may trace anyone who utters it.

So hey Dark Lord, I’ve mentioned your name in this hub so many times, doesn’t mean I’m up to something against you. Actually, I just listed you as one of my inspirational people in my facebook. See? So please don’t send those death eaters. lol

Voldemort’s Wand

Voldemort’s wand was 13 1/2" in total length, with a 4" handle the wand was made from yew wood, with a phoenix feather core. It was manufactured by Ollivander and was the "brother" or "twin" of the wand of Harry Potter, as Harry's wand also has a core donated by Fawkes, the phoenix bird of Albus Dumbledore. According to JK Rowling, yew can achieve astonishing longevity and can symbolize both death and resurrection; the sap is also poisonous.

Voldemort’s Horcruxes

Voldemort’s horcruxes are my favorite in the Harry Potter story. JK is so creative. The idea of horcrux is wickedly creative itself. A climax wouldn’t be so climactic without a horcrux. Every twist in the puzzle wouldn’t be so intriguing and exciting without a horcrux. Merlins beard! I forgot to say what is horcrux. Apparently you forgot what are horcruxes or you really don’t know what I’m talking about. lol Even Hermione can’t help you so here it is…

A horcrux is an object in which a dark wizard or witch has hidden a fragment of his or her soul for the purpose of attaining immortality. Creating a horcrux is considered very immoral as it requires killing someone. Lord Voldemort is the only known wizard to have created more than one horcrux…he created seven of them to be exact.

Every day, every hour, this very minute, perhaps, dark forces attempt to penetrate this castle’s walls.

The seven horcruxes:

Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring – Tom Riddle created this horcrux after he killed his father. He cast a spell with this ring owned by his maternal grandfather, Marvolo Gaunt. He created this Horcrux not knowing the ring's jewel was the Resurrection Stone, the second of the three Deathly Hallows. How fascinating! This horcrux has been destroyed by Albus Dumbledore using the Godric Gryffindor's sword.

Tom Riddle’s Diary – Voldemort made this horcrux after murdering Moaning Myrtle. The wicked diary is introduced in the second chapter of the Chamber of Secrets and is destroyed by Harry Potter during the climax of the story using the basilisk fang.

Helga Hufflepuff’s CupTom Riddle created his third Horcrux using a cup owned by Hogwarts founder Helga Hufflepuff. The spell was cast after he murdered Hepzibah Smith by poisoning her. This Horcrux is destroyed by Hermione Granger in the thirty-first chapter of Deathly Hallows using the basilisk fang.

Salazar Slytherin’s Locket – Tom made this locket as his fourth Horcrux after killing a Muggle tramp. Nobody seemed to have the power to open this locket and destroy it. It had a strange negative effect to whoever wore it. Ron Weasley surprisingly destroyed this horcrux using the Godric Gryffindor's sword in the 19th chapter of Deathly Hallows.

Rowena Ravenclaw’s Diadem– this time the Dark Lord used Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem as his fifth Horcrux after killing an Albanian peasant. Harry Potter discovered this horcrux in the Room of Requirement and it was destroyed by a Fiendfyre curse cast by Vincent Crabbe.

Harry Potter – Voldemort unintentionally sealed a fragment of his soul within Harry Potter when the killing curse backfired. The lightning bolt shaped scar marks a connection with Harry and Voldemort. It’s one of the reasons why there are some similarities between the two wizards like their ability to speak and understand Parseltongue. Voldemort destroyed this Horcrux within Harry during the end of Deathly Hallows using the killing curse.

Nagini – everybody knows Nagini. It’s Volde’s pet snake. This Horcrux was actually formed earlier, with the murder of Bertha Jorkins. Neville Longbottom destroyed Nagini using the Sword of Godric Gryffindor. Since she was Voldemort's last remaining Horcrux, her death sets up the series' climactic duel between Voldemort and Harry Potter. With no Horcruxes remaining and rendered mortal, Voldemort's death in that duel is final

Voldemort Quotes

The following are just few from the Dark Lord Voldemort's quotes in Harry Potter.

I can make bad things happen to people who are mean to me. I can make them hurt, if I want…

I was ripped from my body, less than spirit , less than the meanest ghost, but still, I was alive.

Don’t you turn your back on me, Harry Potter! I want you to look at me when I kill you! I want to see the light leave your eyes!

Voldemort is my past, present and future. I am Lord Voldemort!

Greatness inspires envy, envy engenders spite, spite spawns lies.

Because you love reading my hubs, you get another funny thing...here it is...crazy wizards!

Why don't we give another ten points for Slytherin for this amazing hub! :) And don't forget to vote up for me :) Thanks for reading. I'll see you in my next hub. Cheers!
