It's a popular way of saying "good luck" -- really not sure why that ever meant good luck, it doesn't sound very lucky to me.
Edited to add: My husband just informed me that it came from a joking phrase that stand-ins often told the primary stars in theater performances, which would have been good luck for the stand-in.
