Ray Bradbury, hands down. He has so many short sci fi stories, each with a different twist.

I'm going to throw H. G. Wells into the ring. I haven't read every science fiction author out there, but its easy to see how Wells influenced the genre, as well as sub-genres like steampunk.

Like badegg, I am a huge Bradbury fan.  I love his subject matter and his style.

I agree that the best American Sci-Fi author was Herbert. I have no idea how he came up with his ideas.

There are to many to choose from.

H.G Wells has to be one of the greatest as his stories have survived the test of time and are still enjoyed today.

Arthur C. Clark will always be remembered as one of the greats of the genera during the 20th Century.

Isaac Asimov wrote some of the best Robot related Sci-Fi stories

Philip K. Dick wrote some of the best stories to have been turned into Movies.

Harry Harrison for me has to be one of the greats. I was introduced to his work about 14 years ago while I was at college. I've never looked back.

If we are talking about all time great sci/fi writers, we have to look at the most influential and original, don't we?

In that case I would say,  for me, it is the great... Jules Verne.
