Five Childhood Memories, Five Haiku
Grandmother
Gran lies in her bed.
Family try to comfort her.
She is not healthy.
Time creeps by slowly,
And she and I share secrets.
We play quiet games.
Stark chime of the phone.
Mum says Gran's gone to heaven.
Feel terribly lost.
Mountain
I climb with my dad,
Up the side of the mountain.
Together we talk-
We're laughing, joking.
Mountain seems to have no end.
We stop for a rest.
We continue on,
And suddenly I see it;
We've reached the summit.
I look down and feel
Dizzy; We're up so high.
On top of the world.
Roses
Plant roses with Mum.
She holds the flower in place.
I pat down the soil.
I am amazed to
Discover the flower grows
Slowly but surely.
Vision
Awake, but confused.
Something's wrong with my eyesight.
Worse than yesterday.
Just gets worse from here.
Waiting rooms and doctors flash
by my eyes; No use.
Sister
Shy, I wave hello.
Meeting her for the first time;
My little sister.
Wrapped in a pink cloth,
As snug as the snuggest bug.
So many questions.
"Please, can I hold her?"
I do; a tiny treasure.
I smile while she sleeps.
