My Squidoo Income Challenge Day One

Many of you have been wondering why I have been absent from HubPages. I have been busy on another site called Squidoo. Some of you may be familiar with this web 2.0 site. For those of you that are new to Squidoo, let me introduce you. It is a site similar to HubPages, that lets you write content and earn money from affiliate sales and revenue ad share. I believe they have been around longer than HubPages. They also get more traffic and love from Google. Why? Many SEO gurus say it's because of their linking structure. Don't know if it's true. That doesn't really matter. What does matter is that there are Squidoo lensmasters earning thousands of dollars a month. That's not the amazing part. What I find unbelievable is that many of these lensmasters don't backlink! That got my attention.

At the end of August, I came across a handful of Squidoo lensmasters that were earning a full time income. One lensmaster's online earnings were $6,000 for the month. What's remarkable about her? She's only been making money online for a year. Here earnings skyrocketed by thousands in 6 months! Of course, that got me thinking. If she could make tons lenses, with a full time job and a farm, anyone can!

Guess what I did! Just take a wild guess. I added 50 more lenses to my Squidoo accounts in the month of September alone. That's almost 2 lenses a day. Actually more because I don't work on the weekends. My children keep me very busy, but I digress. Since I love to keep track of my stats to see what works and what doesn't I decided to keep a journal on HubPages.

Why am I doing a Squidoo Income Challenge?

From my experience, I know that I can earn money from Squidoo. I earn an average of $100.00 a month from Amazon, through my Squidoo lenses. I use my Amazon affiliate links in the content. I also use their Amazon modules because it's just quicker and I don't mind paying them half. They do have to pay for the servers, which are probably very costly. When I read what these lensmasters were doing, I knew I could duplicate their technique. I bought an ebook from one lensmaster and took notes from another's blog entries. (Don't worry, I'm going to share all of this in future posts.) I put it into practice. Here's the part that annoyed me. I am an SEO master. I backlink my backlinks. They encourage you not to, so that the search engines could find your lenses naturally. For the first couple of weeks, I tried to keep my hands tied to not backlink. I feel like it took forever to rank on Google's first page. This month I said, "What the heck? I'm leaving money on the table. I'm doing it my way!" I created a lens, backlinked it and in a few days made a sale. That's what I'm talking about!

Here are a few of the reasons why I am taking the Squidoo Income Challenge.:

  1. My daughter is in college. Her expenses are about to explode when she finishes the two year college she is in and enters George Mason University for an environmental engineering degree. Her father is absent financially ... and emotionally too. So, that leaves me. She already works and is the most frugal young adult you will ever meet. She needs help and I'm the only one that she has.
  2. My youngest daughter needs braces. Her dad doesn't provide medical insurance. I don't have any either. Braces will cost thousands.
  3. I need major repairs in my home.
  4. My 17 yr old is a senior. Senior year is expensive. Looks like he will not be attending the senior trip. Can't afford it. His car needs repairs, etc.
  5. I'm trying to create passive income quickly. HubPages is great, but it's taking too long. So, I'm trying to jump start Squidoo and then come back to HubPages to rinse and repeat.

Day One: October 1, 2012

This post was actually written on pen and paper. Imagine that? I figured that when I had time I would type it up to share with all of you. Basically, what I'm going to do is keep track of the amount of lenses I have, the new ones I add and the backlinks I build. This should give us a clear picture of what action needs to be taken to build profitable lenses.

One thing that one of the lensmasters talks about is outsourcing. I didn't like to outsource because I am a control freak with my online work. However, after doing the numbers and looking at her profit I realized that it wasn't a bad idea. So, I scouted all over the internet and found several lensmasters that sell Squidoo lenses. I purchased some, added my content, a few modules, changed the theme and published them. Then I built a few backlinks and planted them in the internet. That's how I see this whole project. I am sowing seed that will bring me fruit over and over again.

Day One I purchased:

  • Monster High Sleepwear for Kids
  • Neck Back Massagers

Had to take the links out of the lenses above, due to HubPages TOS. You can look them up by their names if you want to take a look. Lensmaster accts: dollstoysvideogames and Squidoo_income_challenge

The following lenses were created by me!

At the end of Sept 2012 I had 134 lenses. On Oct. 1 I added 4 more lenses for a total of 138 lenses.

  • I tweeted them out.
  • Posted them on facebook.
  • Submitted them to submitstart.com

Thanks for posting this information. I wrote a few lenses for Squidoo when I first began writing online. I didn't have much luck, but I knew a bit less than I do now. I'm going to go back and give it another go.

I'm rooting for you and look forward to hearing more about your success!

Thanks for the information. I checked out your lens and the one thing I noticed is squidoo allows a little more Amazon links (no insult intended.) than hubpages. Please keep us updated. I may try a few again.

Hi Supermom, this is interesting stuff. I've had 5 squidoo lenses for the last month and have made absolutely nothing. I also put my heart and soul into a science lens which they wouldn't publish on the basis of plagiarism, there was none. I'm not expecting to be rich, but it would be nice to have made a few cents! I'm most certainly going to be following your progress and checking out your links. Are you not allowed to link to Squidoo lenses on Hubpages? I think I have. Voted up, keep us posted on how it goes.

Interesting hub, I wonder if many people at Squiddo are feeling the pain from this last Google algo update? I have considered it before but for me it depends on how it handles these updates, otherwise it is easier to just stay in one place for rev sharing.

I have my own sites that I have been rehabbing lately! Ahh.......Google!

Oh man, I feel a bit stretched already, but I gotta admit that just this past week I've been thinking about jumping on Squidoo too. I've been focusing a lot on Textbroker for some fast cash, and it dawned on me that after researching and submitting a TB article it would be supereasy to do a rewrite and put that up on HP or Squidoo, then add a backlink and...

Okay, I'm gonna try to stretch just a bit further then...I'll signup for Squidoo by the end of the week, and I'll definitely use your affiliate link. Wait, can't do that from HP, right? So is it on one of your blogs? I'll go take a look. It's been a while since I visited your blogs anyways.

Okay, supermom. Good to see you again. I'll vote up and share with my followers too. I'm sure they'll be interested in your adventure.

Good luck and Aloha!

oh, duh. the link is right up there ^

Good job on Squidoo. I admit I find it very difficult to get my posts to rank and earn on Squidoo compared to Hubpages ad program/adsense but it sounds like you have the knack for it. I probably should hammer away at more affiliate-based posts and outsourcing like you do on Squidoo.

Great post as always.

I don't want to miss your updates on your Income Challenge. I've written 3 lenses myself, but I don't take enough time at Squidoo to make more than a tiny bit of money every month. Maybe I should start making more of an effort and see what happens.

Interesting hub and subject.

Supermom, you are brilliant! I don't know how you manage the multi-tasks you must face every day.

This is a very helpful hub. I'm clicking your Squidoo link. I figure there's no harm finding another source of income.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Very interesting hub, I'm about to launch on squidoo myself and will definitely keep following your challenge, but before I sign up I wondered if you have an opinion as to whether it is better to sign up using my hubpages user name or using a different username.

@Radcliff Thanks for the comment and the encouragement! I have been so busy adding more lenses to my accounts that I haven't had a chance to post an update. I have been keeping records, so I can share them. So far I have added 50 more lenses to my Squidoo portfolio and I still have 8 more days left this month! Have I earned money? YUP! Stay tuned.. ;)

supermom_in_ny profile image

@Lipnancy Not only do they allow more links per lens, you also earn more per sale from ebay. I have sold big ticket items and earned commissions commissions from $30.00 to $50.00 per sale! Here you earn per click, but there is no comaprison. Squidoo definitely helps you earn more with ebay!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Stay tuned because I have completed my goal of 50 lenses and I will be sharing the details. I am also going to share a free ebook that builds a good foundation for making money on Squidoo! ;)

@travelschooling HubPages wouldn't let me post more than two links to Squidoo which really messed up my plans to update everyone here. There were days I added 10 new lenses! I figured out a way around it and I kept records, so I will be sharing some info later today. I finished my goal of adding 50 lenses to my portfolio and it has increased my earnings. I'm so excited I am not going to stop at 300 lenses. My new goal is 1000! :)

Will be sharing a free ebook on my new post that will help everyone earn with Squidoo. ;)

@LucidDreams I know what you mean. I was earning over $300.00 from Adsense from just one site and it tanked with one of the algorithms. This has been happening since I started online in 2005. Anyway, I am earning with Squidoo even through this EMD update. Lensmasters I know are still earning and making more lenses everyday, so the update must not have effected Squidoo. I have increased my Amazon sales and Squidoo sales, so I'm pretty happy with the results. I've been on Squidoo since 2006, but haven't made the decision to increase my lenses so drastically until now. Finished my 50 for th month, but I have more to go. My new goal is to have a total of 1000! ;)

@chrisinhawaii I've been making money online since 2005 and the most important thing I learned is that you must have multiple sources of income. You never know when something may happen to one of them. I was making an easy $300.+ a month from Google Adsense with just one of my blogs and then poof! I was earning over $1000. through advertising on my sites and Google did an update which lowered my page rank and that dried up. This is why I am going to build a large portfolio with Squidoo, then duplicate my efforts on other sites as well. Right now HubPages is going through some changes, so I will not be focusing on creating too many hubs at the moment. However, HubPages is in my big plan.

Thanks for sharing my hub. It's always appreciated.

@wetnosedogs Thanks for the share!

I'm excited about sharing the latest stats with everyone. It is working and I know I am going to have a fabulous payout in commissions this Christmas. I can't wait! I have already made a lot of sales due to Halloween. That's with just a handful of Halloween costume lenses! I am not going to stop making them though. I want to ready for next year's Halloween rush! ;)

@TurtleDog Right now I am focusing on Squidoo because I want to create a lot of evergreen lenses that will earn money for me year round. My goal is 1000. After that, I am going to do the same thing on another web 2.0 site. There are so many and they tend to rank on the first page of Google quickly. I figured out it is because of it's linking structure. This is the same reason why Amazon, eBay and other stores rank on the first page of Google for products. Diversifying my affiliate marketing efforts insures I will always have income even if one of my sites is effected by Google. :)

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

@Barbara Kay Earning money on any site really comes down to picking the right keywords. You can have a great hub on a specific topic, but if it doesn't have a lot of search volume it will not produce any results. I am going to explain this in my next hub today.

Thanks for the comment!

@mizjo Find additional sources of income is exactly how you make a full time income online. The important thing is to focus on one site. Make great content, build backlinks and move to the next site. I did before with my network of blogs and revenue sharing sites. Now I am going to do it again with web 2.0 properties.

Stay tuned for more info! Thanks for joining the conversation. ;)

@Nettlemere I am a great believer in always using the same username because it helps with branding. However, I wasn't sure if that was a good idea on Squidoo. I decided to open four accounts, one with my username and the others using a main category for the lenses. I haven't seen any difference in the traffic or sales. After checking the results I found it doesn't really make a difference. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on my hubs! ;)

@Lauryallan Awesome job! Gave you a squidlike and a tweet. For some reason the url above doesn't work because it has a period at the end. So, I am going to post the correct one in case any fellow hubbers / lensmasters want to check it out and give it some lens love! ;)

@KenDeanAgudo My advice is to not bother with Squidoo. They have changed their practices and policies and you never know if your lens will be locked without any warning. It was a great site for awhile. Now I don't even log on to check my accounts.
