The Most Luxurious Prison In The World (Complete With Pictures)

Actually I was confused in choosing the category of this hub. The first time I want to choose "travel & places" category, but if I look back the title and the description this hub related with "Politics & Social Issues" with the subcategory "Crime & Justice". I don't want the title not connected with the content inside this hub. Back to topic, this time is difficult for us, bad economic condition haunted many people around the world. And this was also happen in my country, where many crimes shown up at the newspaper. With the big headline. Like: bank robbery, the recently news was the gold shop being robbed by the thief (about 3 kilograms of jewelry were disappeared from the shop). And many other cases like murder, corruption, rape, fraud, etc. Where all the cases end? a suspect will end up in jail, after going through the court process.

Jail is the best place for the crime suspect. And we all know the condition of the jail. Although we got free meal and place to rest, but better place is the house, right! I think we have seen all about prison in the movie. How bad the condition during in prison. We also haunted by other criminal. Other bad condition like sanitary, food, have to join with other prisoners at the same jail.

But this place is totally different with other prison. This jail is totally luxurious with complete facilities. This is good news for the crime suspect who will be jailed. The Government of Norway will operated the new prison and this jail is very luxurious. It called Halden Fengsel. With capacity around 225 prisoners. Halden Fengsel is the second largest prison in the Scandinavian countries.

Halden Fengsel was completed with various facilities, like: music studio, gym, and a guest house with luxurious interiors allow prisoners to stay with the family who visited them. The location was in the large area around 30 hectares.

Unlike other prisons in other place which very humid and the smell of urine which stung the nose. Halden prison’s always smell by the fragrant from the kitchen, where inmates learn to cook. Are Hoidal is the head of the correctional institution in Norway said that "Norwegian prison system concerned with human rights and respect for prisoners, what was in Halden prison was not extraordinary thing". He also believes that humane treatment of prisoners will reduce the crime. "Here, there are drugs dealers, murderers, and rapists. But we want to fix them with restoring confidence through education and training work" said Hoidal. Based on accurate data, only 20% of the ex-prisoners who returned  to the prison in Norway. The good news is Norway's crime rate was low, around 69 per 100 thousand inhabitants. We can learn from the Norway Government how to make this real.

Please enjoy all the pictures below.

Do you want to stay here? I don't think so. I think we don't want to be jailed. Like I said before, The comfortable place is in the house. If you want to stay more enjoyable, hotel is the best choice for us to relax while holiday or vocation. I hope this hub become a knowledge for us and we can learn about the social system from another country. Living in harmony is the goal of life. I hope we can live in peace without any crime around us.....amen.

I don't know what to say. I think if prison in Indonesia looks like this many citizen will choose to live inside the jail because outside the jail life is way harder and why we should spend tax money for giving luxury to the criminal?

Prasetio - It's hard to believe these photos are of a prison. They look like shots taken on a college campus with dorm rooms, a well-stocked library and a beautiful gym.

If we treated murderers, rapists and other criminals like this in U.S. prisons, upon release they would go out and commit more crimes in order to come back to such a luxurious jail. Unbelievable!

Interesting Hub Prasetio.... it would be interesting to see how many of their inmates return to prison after they have been released. JM

You stated that only 20% return to the life of crime necessitating further prison sentences. That is wonderful! Chicago has a prison that is also similar with luxuries offered to the prisoners from photos that have been circulated on the Internet. I do not know if their rate of returning prisoners is as good as the statistics from Norway. I can only hope! Many people living on the streets would love to have accommodations like this!

Prasetio, Very interesting hub! As stated by drbj it does look more like "college campus dorm rooms" I assume this prison is NOT for violent & dangerous criminals? Perhaps the idea is to rehabilitate the prisoner back into society after serving the proper "time" for the crime? The significantly lower 20% return speaks well of the system...

Thank you for sharing! Peace & Blessings!

Interesting ! Prison is about choices, or lack thereof... It is a state of mind... If societies "guilt" demands luxurious "hotels" for the criminals perhaps the benefit is, "out-of-sight-out-of-mind" for society in terms of not having to deal with the criminals issues... Example: education, or lack thereof. Pay now, or pay later. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Some criminals seek "short cuts."

Hard to believe this is any kind of punishment. All they need is an occasional weekend furlough and they're all set.

Although I understand the reasoning behind it , I can't say

I agree with these prison luxuries especially when the citizens end up paying for it. Nice hub though. Thx Prasetio.

Where do I sign up? lol This is nicer than some people's homes. Of course, I do believe that inmates should have library time and the opportunity to rehabilitate themselves and the prison should be clean. Such a luxurious environment such as this is a bit extreme and unfair to the people that the criminals have hurt. Luxuries should be earned.

Thank you very much, drbj to open your mind about this topic. I know it hard to believe. For me, personally it looks three star hotel with luxurious facilities. prasetio30 profile image

thanks, James. I heard that this system reduce the crime in Norway. But it could not accommodate all the inmates in the country. Because this place was very limited with the number of inmates, if you read back again. Only 225 inmates can be accommodated in this place.

Good morning, Peggy. I didn't really know if Chicago has the same type of prison like this in Norway. But I hope we can learn from this jail to imitated in other country with the high number of crime. In other side it need much budget. I think they have "secret" treatment inside this jail.

If you read back all the prisoners got good education and training work, so if they back to their life they will be a new person with new skill.

Very interesting hub. I guess the success rate all depends on the lifestyle the prisoner had before they went to jail. If their standard of living improved they might be tempted to offend again. If they had a better standard of living on the outside they may learn to behave. The other thought is that they may at least learn something in there from the library or the music studio, and therefore improve themselves.

Certain countries, probably Norway is one of them, there are hardly any prisons at all. It's all home prison with electronic anklets. The reasoning is that to make someone rehab and not punish. Therefore for Norway to have a prison - nice at is looks like means that it must be housing the worst of the worst to merit a prison sentence in such a country.

In this country bent on punishment and housing prisonors to other states that have an overbundance of prison facilities thousands of miles away from any family support group ( think Hawaii here - they sent them to for-profit prisons) when they get out - it's harder to get to a normal life with a job and a house.

only in rich small countries like Norway would this this prison work. Here in Us the capacity would probably be 6 times over the limit of the designed population limit.

HappyHer profile image

That looks more plush than a lot of hotels I've seen. It's wonderful that they do the work they do. With such a low percent returning to crime, it looks like it would be a model more prisons might want to emulate.

Hello again prasetio you've started quite a debate here. This prison in Norway doesn't surprise me, although I am against luxury for offenders and believe that crime should be punished with certain deprivation and spartan but humane facilities. 20% returning visitors is more than a good luxury hotel could expect! UK prisoners were recently granted the right to have conjugal visits, making life even more enjoyable for them! Great hub and talking point, well done and thanks.

prasetio30 profile image

Welcome to this hub, Juliette. I know there are too much debate about this prison. But I really liked to know all comment from different person. This make us more critical about something around us, especially anything happen in the world. And I got many opinion about positive and negative for inmates. I know they have too much guilty, but it depend on how the law judge them. And it back to government policy.

And I heard good news from you about UK prisoners. They need to be treated like that. And it have run for long time ago in my country. Thank you very much, Juliette

Presetio - excellent hub. I do think more than luxurious the prisons should be seen as humane. Giving prisoners a sense of self worth and the opportunity to better themselves in a somewhat positive environment goes much further than the inhumane culture here in the US which takes a drug offender and creates a violent offender. Rehabilitation has been passed over for corporate profits made by private prisons through repeat offenders. I do think the one thing missing in most of the responses is the reality that this is still a prison. You are still under lock and key, without the ability to move freely through society. No matter how accommodating the facility I could see myself going insane under such conditions. This alone would stop me from committing a crime.

Support Med. profile image

Support Med. 6 years ago from Michigan

My first thought was that many people who are not criminals and work hard everyday do not have homes that look like this. I think it would serve better as a second stop, for rehabilitation purposes after prison. It would do no harm for other countries to look into to the social system concerning low crime rate in Norway, however, there are also many criminals who prefer being in jail than outside of it, as they have gotten comfortable there and some think it ranks up their status (I know, unbelievable, but true). I understand the concept of helping them to conform into the real world, I just would not want it to go too far. God bless those who will benefit/learn a new direction because of this; but then there are those criminals who no matter how 'good' prison is, change just will not happen. Human rights concerning prison is a subject that is being more heard about and yet we cannot forget the rights of regular/everyday/crimeless citizens, job or not. It seems to be a wise idea to put just as much, if not more effort into seeing to it that we are employed and making sufficient income and our children are getting the proper education even in a public school; and for those who, for whatever reason, are feeling the economic crunch, there are more abundant/quality filled resources to allow them to maintain what they have until things get better. You have written a very thought provoking article. Good one/rated up!

I don't know why so many people find it questionable to treat lawbreakers like human beings (which there are... no matter how heinous their crime might have been.) SOBF has it exactly right. Prison is confinement. Prison is deprivation of freedom. Prison is not -- nor should it be -- torture, mistreatment, brutality, harassment, denigration. The problem isn't that inmates may be living in a clean, pleasant environment while some on the outside live in squalor. The problem is society should insure that all citizens live at a reasonable level of comfort and good health. We've tried capital punishment, dungeons and torture for centuries. It doesn't work, and it actually does more harm than good. Some commented that prisoners would commit new crimes so they could go back to a prison like Halden Fengsel. If they did, it would be very sad. The truth is that recidivism rates in the United States are horrendous today. Do you suppose that's because the prisoners like to go back to the brutish prisons we have today? I don't think so. Thumbs up, prasetio30.

Good morning, William. Thanks for share your thought here. That's made a lot of people ask a question. Should the inmates deserve to get all these facilities and there are many people outside felt hunger, even suffer because of this life more difficult. There's no freedom inside the prison. But they still human and when we look at back in the normal jail, there were many torture, mistreatment, brutality, harassment, denigration. I agree with you. Because of that the government of Norway create this prison to reduce kind of these brutality, harassment and so on. And give education to the inmates, so they will be a new person.

I think when it really run as well as like the main purpose and the inmates really regret with they have done before, they wouldn't come back to the prison.

Warm regard and Blessing,

Prasetio

you know what this looks like? A very up-scale drug rehabilitation center. its aweful that criminals get to live this way. Everyone is always talking about "civil rights" Well if you break the law, you should have no rights. Your rights should depend on your crime, and an in house probationary behavior scale. If your a drug dealer and you play nice, maybe you get better living conditions. If your a murder you should have to crap in a box. Well...I guess you all know how i feel about that now! haha sorry, i get carried away! lol

Thanks, pink umbrella for coming to this hub and I know your feeling about this prison. Actually I have the same opinion with you. Maybe we have a big question, how with the inmates who have done murder? I know they did not deserve to be jailed here. I also didn't know what categories of inmates who was jailed in this prison. But I hope the law be obeyed. Thank you so much for giving nice comment here.

Respect for others and harmonious conditions can only create more of the same. If you harness hate and violence then expect to be affected by it when these people get out. Maybe we should take advantage of creating better state of minds while they are in prison. Mandatory exposure to great minds once a week might make a difference in all our American lives. Judgement is for the courts but what can we do to reduce the need for prisons.

Thanks, Martha Castillo for coming to this hub and give wonderful comment. I agree with us. We have to appreciate human life. But sometimes it looks unfair for someone who killed others. But justice have to hold tight. I really appreciate your coming. Good to see you here.

I don't think that prisoners/criminals should be given any luxeries.

What are they going to learn? There are some that outside of the prison they don't have any homes to live at and so they'll think that if they keep doing the crimes then they have somewhere to live...

Thay should just have a little cell and thats all...

Welcome to this hub, Loving_live. Thanks my friend for share your thought about this topic. I really understand with your comment above. As a normal people we may thought about that, So do I. But the Government of Norway has different reason. This is not only a punishment but treatment. We have to appreciate that, although we disagree with them. Good to see you again.

tank you for this hub, I did read about this prison and the training they give is what causes the low returns. it is an extensive program the prisons go through, not just work training but education also. The time put into the rehab is winning out for them. Not all prisons deserve such I agree! ~aloha~

Thanks, Sa'ge for coming to this and share your opinion about this hub. I know we have many reason to saw this Prison. It looks unfair for the criminal, they have a chance to stay like in hotel with many facilities. But when we look back about the reason why this Prison was built. The government looks this with positive side, to educated and give some training. So inmates become a new person to face the future with a new skill also. Thank you very much.

Wow- this was an interesting read. I'm surprised crime rate is low because I could see the incentive to stay in a nice clean and comfortable place like this. Great job on this hub.

Thanks, izettl for share your thought about this prison. If you see this in person, this is unlike other Jail. But we can say this like a hotel. Maybe the criminal was shame to stay longer in this jail, right. Nice to see you here.

Very good hub although I don't agree with the first class treatment... the one thing I do like is the library...let them educate themselves by reading.... other than that I think it's being way too nice... oh and the clean bathroom would keep them sensible. It seems like cruel and unusual punishment to make them live in complete filth , but these should only be given to inmates who show remorse and merit on the inside: and not to violent criminals... even then its way too much... take away first-class and give them coach. Wonder if this is where Marha Stewart stayed on her vacation? Great hub.

Good morning, mell22. I am glad you want to see this hub and share your opinion. With all behind the luxurious prison, there's something different with other prison. To educate them who has been Jailed. With the big hope they will be a new person and life as a normal people, without crime in their mind. I never heard Martha Stewart, but thanks for share about her. Prasetio:)

Are you kidding me, I can see "outmates,"(no such word, I know), wanting to become inmates so much so they might even break into prison rather than out just to live like this. Very interesting information Prasetio30. I've got to go back and catch up with your hubs. Another very interesting installment. Rated up as usual.

Dear friend, fastfreta. I got so many comments about this Jail and most of the comment have the same opinion like you. This jail made the inmates want to go out of this jail, but there's some thing good to remember that we can't get our freedom in this place. How nice and comfy this place, it's still a prison. Thanks for give your vote and your comment really appreciated. Have a great day!

This is strictly to the president ... why would you spent $253 Millions to built a luxury prison for criminals ... when you have millions of innocent men, women and children homeless on the streets starving, you know they're out there ... you refused to help them. So those criminals are more important then these homelessness on the street ... ?

i need an answer please. jshannon77@live.com

Mr President ... Have a blessing Day.

But, I just want to share about the fact and the real fact about the existence of this prisons though there are millions of innocent men, women and children homeless on the streets starving. Personally, I choose the last choice to help others. God bless you!

The prison in this article is a little over the top. It has a lot of unnecessary accommodation. On the other hand i think a number of countries could learn from this prision, including the United states. The thing about this prison is it takes someone who committed a crime and helps give them life skills to become model citizens. It does not just lock people away and hope they learn their lesson. It provides opportunities so that societies as a whole improve from their weakest links.

I can not believe the pics!!Nice facilities!! For real though..the USA could do a bit to improve their system for many non-violent offenders.I think too many make their own pockets full with taxpayers dollars!!!
