Boston Lock Down: Excessive or Necessary?

Boston and many surrounding cities were locked down for almost an entire day, presumably to help keep people safe and to help apprehend the marathon bombing suspects.  Do you believe this was the right course of action?  Should the city have been shut down?  When is this type of lock down appropriate?  And, when does it go too far?

      Totally inappropriate!
The criminals wanted to cause disruption so why oblige them by giving them disruption?

People were asked to stay in their homes but  could pretty much do what they wanted to, at their own risk.  Only the blocks around the explosion were cordoned off.  I don't see that as a huge deal.

It's a no win situation - if they hadn't locked down and a few hundred people had been killed then they would have been heavily critisized. At the end of the day 'it's better safe than sorry'.

Given what they knew at the time, sure it was appropriate. They did not know if there were other bombs waiting to go off.
