Keep the DS or DS Lite in a safe place. Don't let it get wet, not even a little rain if you're carrying it in or out. A carrying case is the best way to keep it.
If for some reason a game won't load, turn the DS off, pull the game out, blow on it, and try it again. This works for Gameboy Advance games, also. No one really knows why.
