Love, Say It In Another Language

In Love with a Non-English Speaker

It is true that love is universal and even two people who do not speak the same language can be touched by the mischief of cupid. I can assure you it is not easy but it can work, and that is part of the charm of this type of relationship. Be prepared for countless misunderstandings, some of them will cause almighty fights that will put your relationship on the spot, but other misunderstandings will have you laughing and becoming a stronger couple.

If you are in love with a non English speaker and would like to tell your loved one in her own language how much you love her but you don’t speak a word outside ‘mi casa es su casa’ or “vous le vous coucher avec moi?” Don’t worry any more, now you can surprise your other half with a little love declaration using her own language. I have collected for you a couple of all time favourite love songs in Italian, Spanish, French and English.

Je t'aime

Say it in French with Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg-JE T'AIME

Say it in French: Je t'aime

Je t’aime…  this is a French song originally written and sang by Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot in 1967. But –because of her husband- Bardot requested not to have her version of the song published, so in 1969 the song was released as sung by Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin.

The words are very simple but the song is charged with eroticism. Basically, he says, “I go and I come inside you and I wait” while she says “you come and go and I join you", she asks him to wait and the song finishes with her telling him “ Come now

This song is to be used at your own risk. I would recommend it ONLY with French people as they are more familiar with these type of “conversations”.

« Je t’aime » the words :

Je t’aime je t’aime, Oh oui je t’aime -

Moi non plus Oh mon amour,

Comme la vague irrésolue Je vais, je vais et je viens Entre tes reins

Je vais et je viens, Entre tes reins Et je me retiens

Je t’aime je t’aime, Oh oui je t’aime Moi non plus, Oh mon amour Tu es la vague, moi l’île nue

Tu vas, tu vas et tu viens, Entre mes reins Tu vas et tu viens, Entre mes reins Et je the rejoins

Love or desire? Say it in French with Enigma's "Mea Culpa"

Mea Culpa

This is another of my favourite songs in French. Sung by the group Enigma. It talks about desire, about the type of love that drives you mad. It is a confession “Mea culpa” means my fault, I am guilty. What is the singer confessing? Well, she is saying, "I cannot sleep, I want you, take me, I am yours. I want to do all my fantasies with you, I know it is forbidden, I am crazy, I let myself go. I am guilty”

"Mea Culpa", the words:

Je ne dors plus (the time has come)

Je the desire(the time has come)

Prends moi, je suis a toi

Mea culpa

Mea culpa

Say it in Italian with Umberto Tozzi: "Ti amo"

Say "I Love You" in Italian:

Italian is a very romantic language and this song by Umberto Tozzi released in the seventies has just been re-released a few weeks ago in France, becoming a hit.

The words? “ti amo” means I love you. He says I love you I am only a man but I love you, like a butterfly spreading its wings, open your doors to this warrior, let me drink from your sweet wine, I love you.

"Ti amo" the words:

"Ti amo, un soldo, ti amo,

in aria, ti amo; Se viene testa vuole dire che basta lasciamoci

Ti amo io solo ti amo in fondo un uomo Che non ha freddo nel cuore nel letto commando io

Ma tremo davanti al tuo seno

Ti odio e ti amo è una farfalla che muore sbattendo le ali l'amore che a letto si fa"

Say it in Spanish with Angela Carrasco's "Quiereme"

Say "I Love You" in Spanish

This is a song by Angela Carrasco, she says “love me, because you have shown me another way of loving and loving like this is different; I thank destiny because he put you in my way. I thank you, because you chose me. Love me, my life love me, today tomorrow and always. Love me and I will be yours forever”

"Quiereme" the words:

Tell her I love you: "The quiero" in Spanish with Jose Luis Perales

"Te quiero" in Spanish with Jose Luis Perales

This is a song by Jose Luis Perales. “The quiero” means I love you. He says “Every time I kiss you it is not enough, every time I have you I go mad, every time I look at you I find a reason to live and every time I see you is like discovering the universe. I love you, I love you you are the centre of my life, I love you, like the earth loves the sun”

"Te quiero" the words:

“Cada vez que the beso me sabe a poco

cada vez que the tengo me vuelvo loco

Y cada vez cuando the miro me encuentro una razon para seguir viviendo

y cada vez cuando the miro cada vez es como descubrir el universo

Te quiero, te quiero

y eres el centro de mi corazon, te quiero, te quiero, como la tierra al sol »

Say it in English: "Lovin' You" - Minnie Riperton

Say it in English:

"Lovin' You", the words:

Lovin' you is easy cause you're beautiful

Makin' love with you is all i wanna do

Lovin' you is more than just a dream come true

And everything that i do is out of lovin' you. La la la la la la la... do do do do do

No one else can make me feel The colors that you bring

Stay with me while we grow old And we will live each day in springtime

Cause lovin' you has made my life so beautiful

And every day my life is filled with lovin' you

Lovin' you i see your soul come shinin' through

And every time that we oooooh I'm more in love with you. La la la la la la la... do do do do do

Say I love you:

In French: Je t'aime

In Spanish: Te amo

In Italian: Ti amo

In Chinese: Wo ai ni

In Filipino: Mahal kita

In arabic: Ana Ahibek

In German: Ich liebe dich

In Flemish: ik hou van jou

In Japanese: aishiteiru, but usually, people prefer to say "suki" or "dai suki" (I like you and I like you very much) because "aishiteiru" sounds kinda strong.

In Thai: chan rak ter

I love the sound of Spanish and Italian, personally :) Would love to learn Spanish one day.

When my husband (then-boyfriend) who's Japanese and I first started going out, we had to rely on the dictionary a lot to talk to each other :P It was definitely .. interesting. By the way, I love you in Japanese is "aishiteiru", but usually, people prefer to say "suki" or "dai suki" (I like you and I like you very much) because "aishiteiru" sounds kinda strong. In Thai, it's "chan rak ter" :)

Thank you for such a wonderful hub! My boyfriend told me the story of how his parents met, apparently his father was French and his mother spoke only English so they had to have a translator! I just couldn't imagine!! But they ended up married for over 20 years! Sadly his dad passed away a year ago just before Christmas so I didn't get to meet him, but it must have been a great love for them to have persevered when they couldn't even talk to each other at first!!

I come from Italian decendency so be a good idea to learn the Italian version, but then I had better only use it with the wife or I could get into serious trouble.
