What do you think of NBA star Jason Collins coming out?
If you are interested in LGBT news, you have probably seen that NBA star Jason Collins publicly announced that he is a proud gay man. He is the first openly gay active professional athlete in a major American team sport. What do you think about his coming out? Is it a positive step forward?
I do think it is a positive step forward. Like Jason himself said - he thought someone else would have done it by now. I'm glad he stepped up and made the first move.
It has been said for some time that if someone was to come out, professional sport would be able to deal with it. And so far, they have.
I say good on him, it takes too many energy to hide because of other people prejudices. Now, he can put all that energy into playing.
If people have an issue with it - it may be more an issue with themselves - his sexuality affects them in no way as it doesn't affect his playing.
What it does affect is the life's of young gay people needing a role model in professional sport - now they've got one!
Thank you Jason for your brave step forward.
I agree, very well said. I also think it is only a matter of time before more professional athletes come out now. NFL player Brendon Ayanbadejo has said he has been in communication with at least 4 players considering coming out. Positive steps!
I think his announcement will open the floodgates for other such announcements.
