“You will be like God” is one of the Most Wicked Lies of the Devil
Lucifer said: "I will be like the Most High. Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depth of the Pit" (Isaiah 14:14-15)
The serpent deceived Eve: "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:5)
Satan’s Deception of Eve in the Garden of Eden
"So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil, and Satan, who deceives the whole world, he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." (Rev. 12:9)
Satan is an expert in the art of deception. He deceived Eve in three ways.
- The first thing the devil did is to make the woman doubt the Word of God. "Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God has made. And he said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" (Gen. 3:1)
- The devil changes and contradicts the words of God. God said, "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." (Gen. 2:17). "And the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die." (Gen. 3:4)
- The devil lied to the woman. He said, "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Gen. 3:5)
The apostle Paul wrote, "But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ." (2 Cor. 11:3).
False Religions teach “You will be like God”
The devil's final temptation of Eve is the most powerful one because it was how Satan himself fell, wanting to be equal with God). Eve tried to become a god herself by her rebellion against the One True God.
The goal of becoming like God is the central teaching of many false religions like Hinduism and other pseudo-Christian cults. This desire to be gods is demonic because Lucifer himself said, "I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High." (Isa. 14:12-15)
The New Age Movement and the desire to be "god" are very strong amongst the young, college educate people in America. It is a religious movement that is centered in SELF- all you need is within - with no defined order of sin, repentance or salvation! You become your own god! The people worship the god of forces and promote the Aquarian Gospel.
New Age regards all religions and religious teachings lead to the same goal. All religions are of equal merit. Satan's primary tactic in opposing God is not to foster atheism but religion; not to prove there is no God but to show that every person is a god. "I have not come to found a new religion," Lord Maitreya says. "I have come to teach the art of Self-realization," something which is neither an ideology nor a religion, but benefits people of all religions and those who have none.
The New Age does express a cloudy sort of religion, claiming vague connections with both Christianity and the major faiths of the East (New Agers like to say that Jesus spent 18 years in India absorbing Hinduism and the teachings of Buddha), plus an occasional dab of pantheism and sorcery.
Correct Understanding and Interpretation of Psalm 82:6 "I said, 'You are gods,"
A Hub has been published to promote the false teaching that every person is a god.
http://hubpages.com/hub/Christianity-the-one-TRUE-Faith-Smile
This hub quotes Psalm 82:6 from several versions of the Bible; "I said, "You are gods, And all of you are sons of the Most High."
I do not see any contradiction of Psalm 82:6 with my belief that the Lord Jesus Christ is the One True God. As a matter of fact Jesus actually used this same verse to show that He is God (Jn. 10:30-38).
What does Psalm 82:6 really mean?
In the proper understanding of any Biblical verse it must be read in conjunction with the whole chapter that will show us the true meaning of the word "gods". You cannot take one verse of Scripture in isolation and read it out of context without referencing it with the adjoining verses.
Verse 1: "God stands in the congregation of the mighty; He judges among the gods." The first word "God" refers to the One True God. The last word "gods" refers to human judges and not to deity. Exodus 22:28 "You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people." The judges of Israel were taking the place of the One True God in judging the people.
It is very clear in the First Commandment the One True God forbids us to have other gods that are heathen and paganistic. "And God spoke all these words, saying: ‘I am the LORD (YAHWEH) your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me." (Exod. 20:1-3)
"He judges among the gods." means that the One True God is judging with the human judges.
A god in this sense is anyone or anything having power over other people's lives.
Please read the Book of Judges in the Old Testament and you will see the administration and judiciary system of Israel.
Verse 2: "How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked?"
Here the One True God is rebuking Israel's judges for judging unjustly and showing partiality.
Verse 6: "I said, ‘You are gods, And all of you are children of the Most High.
Verse 7: "But you shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes."
Here the One True God is rebuking the "gods/judges who will die and fall like other humans.
Nothing is this chapter or verse suggests there are multiple gods who are equal to the One True God. In fact, here the One True God indicates that humans taking God's place in judging others are themselves just as flawed as the people they judge and they will die just the same as them.
Verse 8: "Arise, O God, judge the earth; For You shall inherit all nations." This verse shows that the only righteous judgment will be executed when God judges the earth.
