6. Florida

Per Capita Score: 348

1,000 Yard Rushing Performances: 68

Florida’s 68 thousand yard performances is second in number only to Texas. The number of great backs to come out of Florida is quite daunting, but Emmitt Smith’s statistical career stands above all others. Smith has NFL records for thousand yard seasons, 11, rushing yards, 18,355, and rushing touchdowns, 164, just to name a few.

Obscure State: Edgerrin James had a brilliant career, with over 12,000 yards rushing, but he has one distinction which is not quite so awe inspiring. His longest run in 2006 was just 18 yards, the shortest longest run of any back to ever go over 1,000 yards.

Obscure State: Ottis Anderson, another brilliant back out of Florida with over 10,000 career rushing yards, also has a dubious distinction. His 3.1 yards a carry in 1989 is the lowest average per carry ever recorded for a back finishing a season with over 1,000 yards.

7. Arkansas

Per Capita Score: 338

1,000 Yard Rushing Performances: 10

Arkansas is a good example of a low population state that has consistently produced athletes on an elite level. Although Arkansas has no running backs to achieve exceptional career milestones, they have a number of backs that performed well throughout their careers, most notably Priest Holmes.

Obscure State: Peyton Hillis, in 2010, was the last Caucasian to rush for over 1,000 yards, and is the only white back to have surpassed the mark in almost 30 years.

8. Nevada

Per Capita Score: 323

1,000 Yard Rushing Performances: 9

Nevada makes the state by state list for the first time with running backs Steven Jackson and DeMarco Murray. Jackson has had a stellar career, with over 10,000 career rushing yards. Murray is at the beginning of what looks to be a promising career.

Both Jackson and Murray are still active in the NFL, so with its low population, expect Nevada to be climbing this list for the foreseeable future.

Texas finishes the top 10 in our per capita rushing list. Texas’s 74 career 1,000 yard performances is by far the most of any state. The all-time great backs from Texas are many: Eric Dickerson, LaDanian Tomlinson, Earl Campbell, and Adrian Peterson, just to name a few.

Texas has also produced the top 2 single season rushing performances: Eric Dickerson’s 2,105 yards in 1984 and Adrian Peterson’s 2,097 yards in 2012.
