Basic wardrobe items for women

When I came from Nigeria to Ireland on the last day in September, 2008 for my postgraduate studies, little did I know that as the weather condition drastically changes so does my fashion. I have always known that Europe was obviously colder than Africa but for some reasons, I thought the high cold temperature only existed during winter. Unfortunately, I came with two 32kg suitcases filled with clothes and shoe that I wouldn't be able to wear in Ireland because I could only put them on with a jacket, and it has to be during extreme summer.

I went into the mall the next day to shop for new wears that will make me comfortable. After going round two clothing stores, I ended up buying lots of cardigans, two jackets, two pairs of sneakers and an ankle boot. I wasn't use to the fall/winter fashion because this was my first time coming to Europe, though I have always seen winter fashion on the magazine and TV before I came over to Ireland.

After a few months, when I had adapted to the environment, I was able to know my own personal fashion style and realized that I had bought mostly junks previously and need to get the essential things and build a new wardrobe on them. I ended up giving all my first set of clothing’s to the charities and buying new ones.

I have compiled 20 fall/winter wardrobes essential for the ladies especially for any person, who might just be moving from a different region into a more temperate region. When you have these essential items in your wardrobe, it serves as a foundation for building your own personal fashion style and items to comply different amazing outfits.

  1. Brown/black coat jacket: This piece of item should be of good quality, yet stylish and suitable for your personality because it is worn on top of your clothing items when outdoors.
  2. Trench coat: This coat is usually knee-length; you can never go wrong with this piece because it accentuates any woman’s figure. Don’t wear a longer cloth under this coat because it will destroy the beauty except you are putting on a trouser. They come is different colour but the brown or cream colour always looks stylish.
  3. Leather jacket:This is a versatile piece that every lady should get in their wardrobe
  4. Ankle boot wedges: Wedges are comfortable heels for ladies and high heel shoes boost a woman’s self confidence. These set of boots can simply be worn with trousers, skirts and dresses.
  5. Black/brown knee length boot: Can a lady survive without this during winter? I don't think so. You will look super chic when tucked in a skinny jean, worn with a short dress and many more wide options to consider when it comes to cute knee length boots. I will advice you to get a flat boot that has a good gripping sole because this will be prevent you from slipping on the ground during wintery weather.
  6. Black high heeled pumps: Most ladies should always have this in their wardrobe. It brings out a stylish look in any person when you wear them with a pencil skirt, skinny jeans, and little black dress. It can be worn to work, for interview, parties, dinners and special events.
  7. Sneakers: There are varieties to choose from, and you should buy based on durability and style. You can wear them to classes, to gym and outdoor activities.
  8. Flat pumps: Before I moved to Ireland, I hardly wear flat pumps but I have come to find it so comfortable because I do a lot of walking now and wearing high heels could be uncomfortable some times. You can shop for any colour that suit your style.
  9. Black Blazers/black trousers: With a fitted blazer, anyone could look like a million dollars executive. For a corporate casual look, pair your blazers with dark blue jeans; Combine your blazers with the trouser for any school or work interview or presentation. These pieces of items can be worn together with shirts, blouses, camisoles for work purposes, dinners or special events.
  10. Brown khaki pants:Include this item in your wardrobe for a casual and comfortable look. It can be worn with white shirt or t/shirts.
  11. Pencil skirt: Tuck in a blouse/shirt and accessories with pearl beads around the neck to achieve a classic look. Could be wear to formal/semiformal occasions.
  12. Little black dress: Every woman should own a simple, elegant black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion: for example, worn with a jacket and pumps for daytime business wear or with more ornate jewellery and accessories for evening.
