Best Hard Disk Drive Data Recovery Software (For Dummies)

You don't need to take your computer apart to do hard drive data recovery.
You don't need to take your computer apart to do hard drive data recovery.

You can lose data on your computer in lots of different ways. When this happens, data recovery can be done. Data refers to everything that is stored in your hard drive including the files that are needed by your computer's operating system (e.g. Windows) to function properly. When Windows files become corrupted or damaged, hard drive recovery software may be used to fix it without having to take your computer apart.

Here are some of the best hard drive data recovery software you can use:

  1. DT Utilities Digital Rescue Premium

  2. Recover My Files

  3. Data Recovery Wizard

  4. Disk Doctors Windows Data Recovery

  5. Handy Recovery

  6. ParetoLogic Data Recovery Pro

  7. Quick Recovery

  8. GetDataBack

  9. R-Studio

  10. Restorer2000 Professional

I have also included a few other articles which may be helpful. But if all else fails or if you're too lazy to try to do it yourself, you can always take it to professional data recovery experts such as Disklabs Data Recovery Services or Stellar Information Systems Ltd. See videos below for Disklabs' brief introduction to hard disk data recovery and data recovery procedures.

Hehe. :) I've heard about Recuva. Isn't that the one from Piriform, the makers of CCleaner? :)

Hey susan,

I really used to like OnTrack Easy Recovery a few years back. It was very straight forward. I haven't checked out the latest versions but I assume it wouldn't have changed that much.

Nice Hub by the way :)

@Susan, that's right. Plus "defraggler", but I don't see the benefits of that one. Funny name though :)

In almost every security program there is a different type of software base that performs the essential function of finding hidden files on your hard drive or other digital storage medium.

Data drive failure could happen because of many reasons and so one method to troubleshoot one fault may cause some other problem if the method backfires.First check, if your data drive is mechanically fine i.e. if the read/write head is spinning or not. If you can hear a typically clicking sound when you just turn the HDD then possibly it is just corrupted and it should really be packaged and sent to the data recovery experts

If your computer doesn't recognize your pen drive, try it on other computers, if possible, with different operating systems. The error might be due to a system failure, therefore your USB pen could be OK, but not accessible from your computer

I am a big fan of Recuva (by Piriform). It is an easy to use, free data recovery program which seems to do an admirable job of finding things. Plus its made by the guys who have made CCleaner and Defraggler (two other well known software applications)

Do not be duped into purchasing the Digital Rescue product. Hopeless, absolutely hopeless waste of my money. I feel I need to try and prevent as many as possible from even considering the software:

Used some freeware that located pretty much all the files I would have expected to find but chose not to purchase due to $90 (AUD) cost and searched for recommendations as well as cheaper software. Based on this dodgy review: http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews... went with Digital Rescue.

1. Could not locate Seagate Hard Drive due to RAW filing format. The software did not see the external hard drive.

2. Fix suggested in Migo forum notes convinced me that for Digital Rescue to proceed I would need to run a Quick Format but rest assured, that that would not completely delete my files. Perhaps I was too trusting but believed that the software would recover deleted files from formatted disk. I performed Quick Format: The fix enabled me to see the hard drive (ofcourse) however, the software cannot recover any files. Their absurd tech support advise it is because I formatted the drive. (Here is where I think sheer stupidity arises. Migo, a data recovery software developer suggested a fix that causes files stored there to become irretrievable by their own software!

I wanted to recover files that I located with other, more expensive software. Migo Digital Rescue software sees nothing. Don't waste your money - by something that does what it says on the tin.

Sincerely, JosieK.
