   Is social networking destroying social interaction?
   
   Think of the new Toyota Venza commercial with the girls who pitties her parents as she basks in her virtual Facebook world. Why is it that kids today often refuse to make eye contact, can't understand sarcasm at times, don't recognize voice tone or inflection, and rarely pick up on non-verbal cues?

   It is certainly having an effect.  I think it may get tamed, however.  Teenagers and young adults today are texting and FBing almost non-stop, but kids who are growing up now who are 4-7 years old have not yet really been introduced to this yet.  The parents of those kids (myself included) will temper their use and encourage them to participate in real social interaction to offset what we are witnessing with current teenagers.

   To an extent... Yes, I really hope the trend of Social Networking goes away.  As for texting, that's tough, I see more and more parents texting now as they get to learn how to, it seems like it's a lot easier.
   
   I dislike how a ton of companies are spending so much money on Social Media campaigns it's pretty crazy to think that people get to go on Facebook all day as a job.

   I think so in some ways.
   What happened to actually going out to meet people instead of going on your phone to text, IM, etc?
   
   I definitely think it's caused a lot of people to become evry rude as well. I can't stand being in a conversation with someone and then they look at their phone while I'm talking to them.

   I'm tired of seeing the teenagers in my choirs texting each other during rehearsal-they are sitting next to each other. We are in the middle of a rehearsal.   Besides rude, it can be dangerous when you are not looking where you are going. I don't even want to think about drivers.  But I have noticed some young people who spend all their time looking at a screen. sad.

   Since many of you have brought up texting, I thought I should share this (true) story. In August of 2005 in Irvin, California a women was texting her boyfriend to come pick her up at a shopping center. As they were arguing over text, the boyfriend hit his girlfiend (walking) with his truck while both were looking at their phones. She died. Social Darwinism?

   Yes absolutely. In fact on a recent study in USA, more than 50% of Americans make friends and socialize online.

   I think it all depends. I used to be a hermit crab. All I ever did was study for school, play video games, work, and eat, but I found that social networking was a great tool to break me out of my shell. I am no longer introvert, and now I'm here writing to your question. Social networking hasn't destroyed social interaction, it enhanced it! Even now, I can communicate to not only you right now through this social interaction, but to people across the world! Social networking can be used as a tool to help people, but it can also be used as a weapon of mass destruction. Overall, I think social networking is great.
