According to me each of the social engines are sculpted for specific purposes, at least as the way I use them.
    facebook - connecting with friends
    linked in - business contacts
    twitter - status updates
    orkut - groups

Digg and Stumble Upon are the best, but I use plenty of others, twitter, facebook, linedin, newsvine, mixx, propeler etc...

Why, to get traffic, organic traffic, don't mind the backlinks, but the main idea is to get people to where I want. basically to promote my sites, hubs, articles etc...

Foursquare is one of my favorites. Geo-location-based social networking is a lot of fun, and Foursquare handles it perfectly with customer loyalty. I have a hub on the topic: http://hubpages.com/hub/Why-Foursquare-is-so-cool

I also like Facebook, Twitter and StumbleUpon. They all have their advantages.

I like Facebook for it's ease of use and the way I can connect with friends, family and co-workers.

I used to love FB until it became too intrusive to my thinking. And I personally became more interested in Tumblr until it became more of the teenagers social networking site. I still use LinkedIn, Twitter, G+ and my personal favorite, Pinterest. These are just for personal use. I use more sites for business and networking.
