Your Purpose

You have signed up for Twitter for a reason. Perhaps you want to socially connect with friends or make new friends in the virtual world. Your reasons may be business-related instead. Perhaps you want to spread word about your new company or get hired as a freelance writer for a website that requires social media knowledge.

Your original reason for joining Twitter affects what type of connections you want to make on the website and what characteristics you seek in the users. Whether personal or business related, you want to make quality connections to enhance your experience on the website.

Both what you tweet and who you follow are personal choices. These decisions help you create more quality connections on Twitter.

It's Not All About You

Although your personal reasons explain why you log onto Twitter, you need to abide by a giving philosophy when you are interact on the website. Remember that you are networking, and networking is a two-way street.

Pay attention to your followers. Help them by retweeting messages they send out that you find interesting and relavent to your own profile. Take care with what you retweet. Recycling messages that are not meaningful or related to your own feed do you more harm than good and may even cause some followers to unfollow you.

Retweeting quality messages will both help you learn more about the interests of your followers and let them know you are reading their words and any associated links and hash tags.

The follower who sees the effort you too to retweet will likely thank you or retweet one of your messages in return. A dialogue of messages can then begin between you and the follower. You have now increased the changes of your messages standing out for the follower in the electronic feed of his or her network. You are now memorable.

In addition, the follower may look at your profile and click an associated link listed there. You may have just made a new client. A quality connection has been created.

Selective Following

Another way to generate quality connections on Twitter is by being selective as to who you follow there.

If, for instance, you are a photographer trying to expand your client base and spread word about your expertise, you should connect with other photographers and marketers. The content these people project will likely teach you more about the field and build valuable contacts.

As more like-minded followers are added, you will see your electronic feed is specialized and appropriate to your reasons for logging on to Twitter regularly. The Twitter messages will be of interest, making the experience more favourable and your connections of a deeper quality.

Finding Relevant Followers

Finding followers of specific characteristics can be achieved a few ways. Click on the "# Discover" section of the website and search by hash tag for a specific word or phrase relateed to your interest. You will see, with the most recent tweet at the top of the electronic feed, any public messages that include the keywords.

The hash tag search filter is helpful for finding people who tweet content in which you are interested. Add these people if you determine their tweets are interesting and of good quality.

As you begin to use the website, Twitter will suggest people for you to follow as listed on the left-hand side of your profile. Twitter has determined for you that these people type similar content to you in their messages.

If you are not already following these profiles, take a look at them. If the content seems relatable, add from the suggested list. The method is another way to create quality connections.

Quality Not Quantity

Twitter is a social network that can enhance quality connections if used appropriately. Be selective as to who you follow and seek out prospective followers using the hash tag search filter and profiles suggested by Twitter. Enhance your Twitter experience by building quality connections.
