Abdus Salaam (abdussalaam)

My name is Abdus Salaam and I am a British Muslim of Bangladeshi heritage whom was born in London (U.K) on the 13th August 1982. My highest academic achievement is a Level 5 BTEC HNC in Civil Engineering. By way of profession, I am a Highway Engineer. Currently I am enrolled with the Islamic Online University studying towards a diploma in Islamic studies.

At the time of writing, aged thirty-three, in my spare time I research theology and philosophy and am an advisor within Minhaj-ul-Quran. My experience of Islam is my own experiences in that I have been a Muslim my entire life, a lifetime which spans thirty-three years. Allah says in the Quran that there are three types of Muslims: sinners, moderates and pious [Quran 35:32], and I would consider myself to be a sinner for I do not consider myself to be pious or perfect but I try to be both truthful and moderate in following the middle course.

  Zakat is both charity and tax. Zakat is considered charity - when paid voluntarily, without specifying an amount. But Zakat is also a tax - if a specific amount is a requested by the State. Zakat was initially a voluntary contribution, that eventually became an obligatory duty.
