A Life Underwater

Joined 6 years ago from Coconut Creek, Florida, USA

Gary Adkison began his career as a professional hard hat diver and diving instructor after earning a degree in Underwater Technology from the Florida Institute of Technology. He has also won the prestigious Platinum Pro Award for outstanding contributions to the diving industry of which he has been an active member for over 35 years. He was recently awarded the Into the Blue Lifetime Achievement Award for his conservation efforts in Florida and around the world.

After a lifetime of diving in oceans worldwide, he has watched with alarm, the steady decline of shark populations over the past four decades as a direct result of the Asian long line shark fin trade. Along with his wife, Brenda, they have devoted their lives to working with sharks and promoting marine education worldwide. Through their work, they've been involved in extensive film projects with clients such as the BBC, National Geographic, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, CBS 48 hours, and Dateline NBC. They have also been nominated for five EMMY Awards, two of which were awarded for their involvement in the children's marine educational program ‘Aqua Kids'.

For the past ten years Gary and Brenda have been the U.S. Directors for the Shark Foundation, which aids in funding grants to scientists conducting scientific and behavioral shark research around the world. One of their Shark Marine Reserves, which they helped to establish in Fiji, recently won a nomination for the prestigious BBC World Challenge Award for a conservation effort which positively impacts an island's local economy in a profound and enduring way.

Gary's educational 'Shark Talks' have been heard by thousands around the world, as he continues to persevere in the ongoing effort to save our ocean’s principle apex predator, the Shark.
