Global-Chica Interviews Shanna11
Shanna11 dishes on her name, background, future plans, and the funny way she discovered HubPages.com
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this interview, Shanna. Can you tell me how you found HubPages? What inspired you to become part of the HubPages community?
Hah! It's kind of a funny story. I'd had a rather unpleasant experience with Fiber One bars and was googling them, when I stumbled across a humorous article about the bars by a popular author on HubPages. I left a funny comment about my own experiences, and he loved it! He encouraged me to stay and write and he was so nice and welcoming- everyone I saw was so interesting and nice, so I thought HubPages would be a great place to write, and I wasn't wrong!
Where do you find inspiration for your Hubs?
I find inspiration for my Hubs from everything around me. I'm one of those optimistic types of people who finds something interesting in even the lamest circumstances, so I'm usually not short for ideas, whether I find them at work, in class or while with friends.
If you can pick just one of your Hubs, which one is your favorite and why?
I'd have to say my Tray Translation Hub is my favorite. It's not a helpful Hub at all, but I wrote it after a particularly frustrating day at my mundane dish washing job and I just had a lot of fun writing it.
Wow, you're double majoring in Political Science and Economics, and minoring in Arabic. Are you looking to go into diplomatic services? Are we going to get to read more about those interests of yours?
I am indeed considering a diplomatic career. I really wanted to major in International Relations, but I didn't want to limit myself to political work only overseas. I love traveling and getting involved in new cultures, and if I was able to experience that and get paid for it, it would be amazing. HubPages will definitely hear about it in the near future!
You were named after a romance novel that you couldn't read until you turned 16. Did you read it as soon as you turned 16? What'd you think?
Haha! My mom didn't actually tell me until I was 15 that she'd named me after what I thought was a cheap, trashy romance novel. I was a bit stunned really. I'd never met anyone with my name before and despite peoples' inability to ever pronounce it right, I liked its uniqueness. When I learned that her story about how she "just liked the name" wasn't true, I had a minor identity crisis and immediately made it my mission to find the book. I haunted used book sales and book stores and friend's dusty libraries for months before I finally found a tattered copy and another similar book by the author. In the end, I actually just skimmed Shanna and chucked it in my closet. It wasn't a poorly written book, but Shanna was a spoiled brat, and I couldn't stand her! (Hah, that was weird to have to write...!) I enjoyed the author's other romance book much better, but I'll still always keep Shanna. It makes a good story.
Since you've obviously lived in some fabulous places, are we going to learn more about them in your future Hubs?
HubPages might hear about the places I've lived and been to, but if I was honest, I would say that I don't remember much of some of the more interesting places I've lived. I only lived in Brazil until I was four, so my memories are hazy and if I ever wrote anything about it, I'd have to consult my parents a bit. It was interesting though, growing up in a house though where my American parents spoke Portuguese to each other often (Of course, they only did that when they didn't want us to know what they were talking about!). I will probably write about what growing up around Detroit was like. People always ask me about Detroit, and even though we lived in the suburbs, I was in the city a lot and it really is a very interesting (and yes, sometimes scary) place!
Being pretty new to HubPages yourself, what one piece of advice would you give to a complete newbie?
I would definitely tell them to get involved. I was lucky when I started at HubPages, and I got a lot of initial attention, but for other beginning writers, that may not be the case. I would tell them to keep writing, even if they don't think anyone is reading it, and to be involved in Forums and Q&A and to get to know people. People on HubPages are so friendly compared to other websites around the internet, so newbies to HubPages should definitely take advantage of that!
