Your recipe Hubs can get a makeover in Google search results!

You will soon have access to Special Layout Options in the HubTool

These new capsules will enable you to add fun features to your recipe and review Hubs

As you can tell, March has been a busy month on HubPages! Between the new ability to upload Videos directly to HubPages, the Know It All Contest, improvements in mobile ads, a new header, and the option to move your Questions to your own subdomain, we have been giving you plenty to play with, but we would like to announce yet another new feature.

Very soon, we will be adding Special Layout Options to the HubTool in the form of five new capsules that are designed specifically for recipe and review Hubs. These capsules give Hubs a more polished appearance and also tag them with information in such a way that makes certain details visible in search-engine results.

For more information on the new capsules, check out the Pro Tips section of the newsletter below. Our Special Layout Options can give your existing and future recipes and reviews a significant edge!

Happy Hubbing,

Listen to the latest Online Writing Insider for more info on why microformats matter

More About Special Layout Options

Special Layout Options have two noteworthy dimensions: the capsules themselves, and the function they play in search engine results.

The five new capsules are as follows:

  • Ratings Capsule: Enables you (or your readers) to give a star rating to a product, place, or service reviewed in a Hub, or invites your readers to rate a recipe you have shared.
  • Cook Time Capsule: Summarizes the preparation and cook time for a recipe, as well as the total yields of the dish.
  • Ingredients Capsule: Breaks down ingredients by amount, ingredient, and qualifier or type (e.g. chopped, sifted, granulated).
  • Instructions Capsule: Organizes a recipe's basic procedure into steps.
  • Nutrition Capsule: Presents the caloric information of a recipe in a standardized format.

The search-engine aspect of our Special Layout Options involves review and recipe-specific microformat tags that we have added to the new capsules. These tags enable details like thumbnail images, average ratings, cook time, and nutrition to show up alongside your Hubs' titles and summaries in search engine results, which makes them more alluring to online searchers. These tags also make it easy for recipe searchers to find your recipes by filtering details like ingredients and time constraints.

For an explanation of why microformat tags matter, listen to our latest Online Writing Insider podcast. For more details on the new Special Layout Options, have a look at our blog post announcing their introduction.

CClitgirl Interviews Tammyswallow

A HubPages addict shares some background behind her Hubbing interests

Tammy, Thanks for taking the time to chat with me. You write on a large area of subjects. First question: could you tell us about yourself and what you like to write about the most?

Hello! My name is Tammy and I am a Hubpages addict. I am a Paralegal by trade, now a stay at home Mom, and started writing on HubPages to supplement my income. I had no idea when I started how fun it would be and that I would meet so many wonderful people. This is a great place to be for any one who loves reading and writing on a variety of subjects. I have many interests in many subject areas. I love writing on subjects ranging from crafts, to social interaction, the paranormal, relationships, and saving money.

You have written about paranormal phenomena and you had Hubs in which you interviewed Barry Fitzgerald and Scott Tepperman from Ghost Hunters International. How did you become interested in this?

When I left home at 18, I moved into a duplex in Maryland. The first night I was there, I was watching television when I heard strange noises coming from the kitchen. All of the glasses in the cabinets were clinking as if they were tapping each other. When I opened up the cupboards, there was nothing there. Over the next few months, the activity progressed at a frightening and dangerous pace- from the piano playing in the middle of the night, doors slamming, to blood curdling screams emulating from the basement in the early morning hours. I didn't stay in this house, but I have been searching for answers ever since. I have been a follower of Barry Fitzgerald for a long time as he is one of the leading paranormal researchers in the world. I am an avid supporter of Ghost Hunters International.

What are your favorite things to write about?

My favorite subject to write about is vintage crafts and jewelry making and making beautiful things with an old fashioned flair. Outside of crafts, I like to write about the things that interest me that I can write passionately about. I especially love humorous subjects.

How did you find HubPages? What made you join and want to stay?

While searching the classifieds for a part time job, I came across an ad at my local unemployment office that said "work at home writing what you want." I looked into it and it was HubPages. I joined as it was a great opportunity to work from home while keeping my skills current. I stay because I really enjoy writing, reading interesting articles, and because the HubPages community is so warm. I have made some great friends along the way.

What is one thing you really want to do that you have not had a chance to do?

Great question! I have quite the bucket list. On the top I would have to say is world travel. I want to see the world, especially New Zealand and Ireland. Perhaps I will do this when I retire.

If you had the whole world watching you for five minutes, is there anything special that you would say or do?

Wow, great question! If I had five minutes of the world's undivided attention I would tell people in the world that we must try to love one another and the fighting and hate must end. I would tell the world that we all just need to relax and enjoy some heavy metal music.

Do you do any type of writing outside of HubPages? If so, what? If not, is there any type of writing you would like to try?

Outside of HubPages, I write poetry and screenplays. I am also a contributor to Text Broker where I write technical and travel articles. I would love to try to work in the field of photojournalism.
