An Interview with Eric Mikols
A new Hubber shares his delightfully nerdy passions on HubPages
How did you find HubPages? What made you decide to join?
I actually found HubPages on a job search site. I was looking at freelance writing jobs and found information onHubPages. The site caught my interest when I realized it was a community of writers who actually read and interacted with each others' work. I wanted to challenge myself with a different type of writing, one that was more formal than a normal blog and that required more research and knowledge.
You've only just joined, and yet you've written quite a few awesome Hubs! What's the secret behind your productivity?
I'm a fast writer when working on an opinion or research paper, thanks in part to surviving college. For the most part, if I'm writing on a certain subject or idea than I've had the thoughts in my head for a while now. It just becomes the process of putting those thoughts into words. The more excited I am about what I'm writing, the faster I write.
You've published some reviews on science fiction works, fantasy novels, and comic books. Have you ever considered writing some of your own sci-fi or fantasy stories?
I've wanted to be a writer since I knew how to put a pencil to paper. For some reason, I stopped writing for a long time, but I've been forcing myself to get back to it, taking classes at school and doing my own, personal project. I'm in heavy outline mode for a few stories, as well as in the process of writing a book that makes use of my love of superheroes, science fiction, and frame stories. The day I walk into a store and see a copy of a book I've written will be the happiest day of my life.
You have also written a couple of guides to roleplaying games. Would you say that more people are getting into them now? What makes them particularly compelling to you?
I'm not sure if more people are getting into roleplaying games or not. A gaming shop near my town hosts a few games and it seems like it attracts a good amount of people, including younger teens, which is always encouraging for a niche hobby. For me, I love how much cooporative imagination goes into the whole process. It's not just an adventure I'm having alone, it's a story that the whole group is forming together. I love the social interaction of it the most; hanging out with friends, cracking jokes, and saving the world.
You share in your bio that you have a YouTube channel. Do have any plans on making some HubPages Videos?
I would love to, but it seems so new to me. On my Youtube channel, I make videos that are more variety humor; short gags, dancing, and animation. If I made a video for HubPages, I would want it to challenge me in a new way, like my writing, and I would try to make a more instructional video. We'll see what happens when I come to a topic that I need to show, not tell about.
What are your long-term HubPages ambitions? Is there a certain message or viewpoint you would like to share with your work? What sorts of Hubs might we expect from you in the future?
To quote Howard Tayler of Writing Excuses, I just want to write what I want to write about, and make it good enough that others want to read it. I want to take all the things I obsess about and used Hubpages as a productive outlet for them. Sometimes I'm worried I get too opinionated, but I just want my Hubs to be smart and fun. If I had to have people describe my writing as one thing, I would want it to be passionate. I hope to write Hubs about my faith, instructional articles on video editing, or to talk about theater and acting. Plus, as a soon to be married man, you can bet I'll be writing about the strange new world that is marriage.
